REVIEW – The Iron Tiara by Beth Flynn

Title – The Iron Tiara
Author – Beth Flynn
Publication Date – July 18, 2017
Series – Nine Minutes Trilogy Spin-Off

Anthony Bear and Christy Chapman are from two completely different worlds.

Anthony’s the leader of a motorcycle gang that terrorizes Florida’s West Coast. As a child, he ran away from his family and the Cherokee Indian Reservation to enter a life of crime. As an adult, he leads a multifaceted life managing his two businesses—his legitimate landscaping venture, and his loan shark and underworld dealings. Driven by anger and betrayal, Anthony begins the hunt for Christy’s father, Van Chapman, after he runs out on a loan.

Christy’s privileged life is not as it seems. She has kept painful family secrets and hidden some of her own. She’s determined to find out the truth and expose Van, but her search delivers her right into Anthony Bear’s hands, adding kidnapping to his list of crimes.

Their worlds are as contrasting as the color of their skin. The only thing they seem to have in common is their mutual disdain for Van Chapman…and each other.

They couldn’t be more wrong.

Once again, Beth Flynn has delivered on an emotional, action-packed novel that I simply could not tear myself away from. The Iron Tiara followed Anthony “Bear” and Christy’s story, which turned out to be nothing like I had expected. I thought there would be a hardness to it (especially given my knowledge of Bear); yet, I fell in love with their relationship and how effortless it seemed to be.

“She may have only been eight years old, but she learned two important life lessons. The first was that she was finished being a victim, especially now that she knew how to defend herself.”

The Iron Tiara had such an interesting dynamic because while it was raw and gritty at times, it also didn’t feel as angsty as the original trilogy. Flynn was able to combine some of the darker elements of the MC sub-genre with swoonworthy moments of the romance genre and it kind of surprised me at times. I never knew which side to expect from the characters and could never guess what was going to come next. I have to admit that one of the best parts for me personally was the surprise occasional appearance of Grizz and Kit. It was special and touching to see them together without the events of the Nine Minutes trilogy taking over. Furthermore, it rekindled a love I have for those books, while also showing how talented she is as an author. She instantly had me invested in Christy and Bear, drooling and aching for nothing but more.

“She may have only been eight years old, but she learned two important life lessons. The first was that she was finished being a victim, especially now that she knew how to defend herself.”

Flynn’s writing is as addictive as ever with the release of The Iron Tiara. She has a special quality that draws me in and devours me whole, and I can never seem to get enough. Anthony and Christy had a slow burn, yet insta-love romance, and I can’t say I’ve previously seen that combination pulled off as perfectly as it was carried out here. Beth Flynn isn’t one of those authors who releases every few months, but you can bet that when she puts a new work into the world, it’s absolutely golden. The Iron Tiara was no exception, and with the setup that I saw happening, I’m already anxious to see just what she will come up with next!

A Gift of Time

Synopsis

Are some secrets meant to stay buried?

Three months have passed since Jason “Grizz” Talbot was put to death by lethal injection for crimes he committed. His former wife, Ginny, whom he had abducted from a convenience store when she was a teenager and became the love obsession of his life, has spent more than the last decade trying to carve out a life of normalcy in the bustling suburbs of Fort Lauderdale—including a thriving and happy marriage to Tommy “Grunt” Dillon, a former member of Grizz’s gang.

Tired of the secrets and the lies, Ginny and Tommy thought the final piece of their past could be left behind forever with Grizz’s execution. However, the past comes crashing around Ginny and Tommy when a newly discovered secret threatens to destroy their marriage.

When tragedy strikes, Ginny is forced to reach into her heart and decide, once and for all, what she really wants.

In this third book in the Nine Minutes trilogy, A Gift of Time takes readers from the busy tropical metropolis of South Florida into the serenity of the North Carolina Blue Ridge mountains as Ginny chases down the answers she needs.

Will she have the strength to confront the secrets of her past…and her heart?

Review

Oh man, I feel like I’ve been waiting forever for the conclusion to Grizz, Ginny, and Grunt’s story. When it released, I had a packed schedule and kept having to push it off and now I’m shaking myself for waiting that long. A Gift of Time was everything that I had hoped for, expected, and dreamed of for their ending. As I read this final book in the trilogy, I often felt like Flynn was reaching into my heart and seeing every desire I had for these characters and wrote that to paper.

“Two rings. One of ink and one of gold. Not too many women would ever know the blessing of being loved so deeply by more than one man.”

If you’re a fan of the series, then you don’t need to read a review gushing about the characters and their personalities. Just know that everything that you’ve come to expect from them is present, quite boldly, and then some. All the personality traits that made me fall in love with each of them shone so brightly, which I appreciated given the timespan these books cover. However, there is also growth and I treasured those unexpected moments so much more than I thought I would. Furthermore, I found Mimi’s perspective sprinkled throughout to be refreshing and well thought out. Flynn used her voice in the most opportune moments and it created such an emotional connection to her and everything she was going through.

“A life you have to hide from is no life at all.”

Beth Flynn writes in such a complex puzzle that I couldn’t help but be enamored with it; I enjoyed figuring out how all the pieces would connect in the big picture. She honestly takes you on the journey of a lifetime in a love triangle that is one for the ages. The way that this author pens them forces readers to sympathize with each character, leaving you breathless and unsure who to root for. A Gift of Time brought closure to these characters and definitely left my heart feeling all sorts of happy. I’d love to see some spin-off books with secondary characters, but as for this triangle? The captivation I felt in the beginning of the series never waned or disappeared. I could feel a sense of right when I turned that last page and it made for one incredibly satisfied reader.

Out of Time

Synopsis

They thought with his execution it would all be over.
They were wrong.

The leader of one of South Florida’s most notorious and brutal motorcycle gangs has been put to death by lethal injection. Days later, his family and friends should have been picking up the pieces, moving on. Instead, they’ve been catapulted into a world so twisted and dangerous even the most ruthless among them would be stunned to discover the tangled web of deception, not only on the dangerous streets of South Florida but all the way to the top.

In this gripping follow-up novel to Nine Minutes, Out of Time takes readers from the sun-drenched flatlands of 1950s Central Florida to the vivid tropical heat of Fort Lauderdale to the halls of Florida’s Death Row as we finally learn the gritty backstory of Jason “Grizz” Talbot and the secret he spent his life trying to conceal.

Not even Grizz’s inner circle knows his full story—the tragedy that enveloped his early life, the surprise discovery that made him the government’s most wanted and most feared, and the depths of his love for Ginny, the tenderhearted innocent he’d once abducted and later made his wife.

Once Grizz’s obsession and now the mother of his child, Ginny has spent years grieving the man she’d first resisted and then came to love. Now remarried to Tommy, a former member of the gang, the pair have spent more than a decade trying desperately to live a normal existence far from the violent, crime-ridden world they’d once carved out on the edge of the Florida Everglades. For Tommy, especially, the stakes are high. Desperately in love with Ginny for years, he’s finally living his dream: married to the woman he never thought he could have. But even with the façade of normalcy—thriving careers, two beautiful children, and a genuinely happy and loving marriage—they can’t seem to put the past behind them. Every time they turn around, another secret is revealed, unraveling the very bonds that hold them together.

And with Grizz finally put to death, now Ginny has learned secrets so dark, so evil she’s not even sure she can go on.

Will these secrets tear their love to pieces? And how far will Grizz go to protect what he still considers his, even from beyond the grave?

Review

Holy mother of mercy…what the heck did I just read?! Beth Flynn’s Out of Time left me absolutely breathless, quite literally panting for more of the story. We are, yet again, thrown into this world of Kit’s, navigating through the twists and turns of her insane life. I knew dealing with the aftermath of Grizz’s death would be difficult so I honestly didn’t expect the story to grip me in the same way that the first book of the series did, but boy was I wrong.

“Ginny, I didn’t know who I was in this world.”

Kit and Grunt are now forced to face their past, even the things that seemingly didn’t matter. I felt so sad and so angry during some of these chapters that I really sympathized for Kit. I could completely understand her complicated emotions and where they were stemming from. However, I also felt so much emotion toward Grizz! His backstory and history was just gut-wrenching at times. Together, Kit and Grunt literally had to sit there and untangle a web of lies and deceit, only to feel like it uncovered more half truths. The storyline, and the style in which it was delivered, was so compelling that I couldn’t stop reading. I had to taste every single morsel that Flynn was dropping, outside world be damned!

“Someone’s brother, someone’s son, a criminal, a student, someone evil, or someone kind.”

There are honestly not enough amazing things I can say about this author’s writing. She must have a timeline map drawn out somewhere of all the ways she wants to surprise her readers because of how convoluted the plots are. Flynn would drop these little hints all throughout the novel and then present a giant explosion where my head literally was like ‘whoa – mind blown’! Furthermore, I absolutely, truly love the way that she skips to different time periods, past and present. While I admit that it can sometimes be a confusing tactic to use, it really works in this instance. The method kept me motivated to read, broke up some of the harder pieces to handle, and certainly added to the mysterious element of the series.

“But when you came into my life, I knew who I wanted to be.”

Out of Time is written in a bit of a different style from Nine Minutes, but it honestly made the book that much more fresh for me. I’ll admit that I was a tad apprehensive as I approached the end in regards to how Flynn would continue this series because everything seemed to be wrapping up nicely. Then, true to the author’s style, I was hit with a hardball out of left field. My eyes bulged, my jaw dropped, and I wanted more! I’m so anxious to see how she will continue the story in the third book and just where she’ll take these characters. They’ve seemed to grow, but are still so much who they’ve always been at the core. Now I sit here, biting my nails, just waiting to hear a release date!

Nine Minutes

Synopsis

On May 15, 1975, fifteen-year-old Ginny Lemon is abducted from a convenience store in Fort Lauderdale by a member of one of the most notorious and brutal motorcycle gangs in South Florida.

From that moment on, her life is forever changed. She gets a new name, a new identity and a new life in the midst of the gang’s base on the edge of the Florida Everglades—a frightening, rough and violent world much like the swamps themselves, where everyone has an alias and loyalty is tantamount to survival.

And at the center of it all is the gang’s leader, Grizz: massive, ruggedly handsome, terrifying and somehow, when it comes to Ginny, tender. She becomes his obsession and the one true love of his life.

So begins a tale of emotional obsession and manipulation, of a young woman ripped from everything she knows and forced to lean on the one person who provides attention, affection and care: her captor. Precocious and intelligent, but still very much a teenager, Ginny struggles to adapt to her existence, initially fighting and then coming to terms with her captivity.

Will she be rescued? Will she escape? Will she get out alive—or get out at all? Part psychological thriller, part coming-of-age novel, filled with mystery, romance and unexpected turns, Nine Minutes takes readers into the world of one motorcycle gang and inside the heart of a young girl, whose abduction brought about its fall.

Review

I’ve been struggling for hours to find the words to adequately describe how I feel after finishing Nine Minutes by Beth Flynn. Unfortunately, I’m still lacking proper verbiage. This is the first book in a really long time that has gripped me in the way that it did. I picked it up before bed expecting to get maybe a chapter or two in, was forced to put it down three hours later, and picked it back up the moment I woke up. I am always a tad hesitant to dive into a captor/abductee storyline, but Nine Minutes was superbly done and I thoroughly enjoyed every second of it.

“I loved numbers. I still love numbers. I love how they never lie. They always fit. There is always a constant.”

When I read the blurb, I really expected it to have a dark, formulaic MC romance feel to it. However, I’m pleased to say that it definitely was in no way, shape, or form predictable. While it features a motorcycle club, and a gruff alpha male, that’s about the extent of where I could point out similarities to other books I’ve read in the genre. There were so many twists and turns that every time I thought I could see around the bend, I got whiplash (in the best sense) from the surprises. There also didn’t seem to be a lot of conventional romance or sex to the story, but it really ended up working for the characters. As a reader, I could still feel the progression of feelings and love; I easily understood the difference from infatuation or desperation. It was an interesting dynamic to watch play out. I found myself endeared to (almost) every single character we came across in the novel. Though it’s mainly about a handful of people, I was so invested in each person’s past, present, and future.

“And don’t forget Kit, you’re mine. Only mine.”

The style of writing in Nine Minutes is what kept me salivating, to be honest. It was almost part memoir, which made for an insightful read. The way that Flynn wrote it tells the story between present day and events of the past, but also allowed the heroine of the story to reflect about particular happenings. I don’t think I’ve come across a style like it, which resulted in such a compelling and gripping feel. I had to keep turning the pages to see how it would all come together. The author clearly has a stylistic preference and it really works for the way that she wanted to convey her story.

“That was how I coped with all of it. Always had. I stayed away physically and emotionally.”

I picked up this book because it had been on my Kindle for a year – woo hoo for Challenge reads – and I’ll be meeting the author in a couple months. Boy, am I kicking myself in the butt for waiting so long to dive in! Even though we knew one part of the ending because of the way Beth Flynn began, my jaw dropped and my head spun at the big picture. I’m so anxious to jump into the second book and see how she furthers this story. What a phenomenal novel; I honestly have a hard time grasping that it was a debut!
