RELEASE DAY REVIEW – The Other Side of Tomorrow by Micalea Smeltzer

Title: The Other Side of Tomorrow
Author: Micalea Smeltzer
Release Date: June 7, 2018

Life can change in an instant…

For Willa Hansen, this statement couldn’t be truer. One minute she was a seemingly normal fourteen-year-old, and the next her life was turned upside down with only a few words. Three years later, she’s receiving a kidney transplant and can start living again, only now she’s not sure she knows how.

Life can end in a moment…

Jasper Werth knows this all too well, seeing as a drunk driver killed his little brother. He’s always been a carefree guy, never taking life too seriously, but losing his brother is a major blow, and he finds himself lost until Willa walks into his life.

Life can mend the most broken parts of our souls…

Willa and Jasper couldn’t be more opposite, but as fate brings them together they’ll learn maybe they’re not so different after all.

Sometimes what you need comes in a package you least expect.

A powerful journey that explores life, loss, and love, The Other Side of Tomorrow is so much more than a romance novel. Willa and Jasper’s story is raw, gripping, and undeniably heartfelt, a tribute to the healing power of hope and the unexpected adventure that is living. From their awkward first meeting to the very last page, I was utterly enchanted by the inexplicable connection Willa and Jasper shared. This couple felt fated in every single way, and I quickly found myself walking the twists and turns of their journey with baited breath, praying they’d find the happily ever after they both so desperately deserved.

“Your sunrise is here, Willa, don’t let it get away.”

There is no denying the deeply personal nature of this story. Micalea Smeltzer lays bare the hopes and fears of living with kidney failure, unafraid to own the uncertainty and guilt that comes with waiting for a transplant. Willa’s struggles were written with a profound understanding that breathed life into each heartbreakingly earnest moment and gritty emotion. As Willa and Jasper’s love bloomed, the author used Willa’s experiences with kidney failure and organ transplant to unobtrusively raise awareness, ensuring that this couple’s story would leave an indelible mark on the reader.

“A few seconds is more than enough to change everything.”

Willa and Jasper’s journey wouldn’t be complete without the vibrant cast of secondary characters that helped color their world. I especially adored Willa’s sister Harlow who embodied positivity and unconditional love. Despite the serious nature of Willa’s condition and Jasper’s loss, this novel was largely life-affirming. Overflowing with joyous appreciation and unapologetic exploration, Willa and Jasper’s story was uplifting and transformative. I completely devoured this book, lost to the magic that is Micalea Smeltzer’s writing. Breathtakingly poignant and emotionally uninhibited, The Other Side of Tomorrow is an absolute must-read!

RELEASE DAY REVIEW – Enchant by Micalea Smeltzer

Title: Enchant
Author: Micalea Smeltzer
Series: The Enchanted #1
Release Date: November 17, 2017

Mara Pryce never imagined that her life was anything but normal and then a strange gray-eyed young man appears at her graduation. When he vanishes without a trace, she’s convinced he’s a figment of her imagination. Then he appears again and shatters her whole world.

Mara is an enchanter, part of an ancient line of Wiccan power, and a war is raging—one of good and evil—between the Enchanted and the Iniquitous.

The Iniquitous want her dead and it’s Theodore’s job as her protector to keep her safe.

When Mara and Theodore arrive at a safe house, where Mara will remain hidden while learning about her powers, they find that the real threat might be a little closer to home than they want to believe.

Micalea Smeltzer delivers the beginning of what is sure to be a magical new series with Enchant. Charming, sweet, and full of feels, Mara and Theo’s story was utterly captivating. I’m not usually one for fantasy romance, but the author had me so invested in her adorable, fierce, and swoon-worthy characters that I couldn’t help but devour this novel. From the very first page, Mara and Theo shared something special, the kind of chemistry that is absolutely electric. I adored the push and pull between them, thoroughly entertained by their witty banter and serious sexual tension. Micalea Smeltzer did a fantastic job developing Mara and Theo’s instant attraction into something more significant that demanded to be explored.

“But I was selfish enough to take all he’d give me while he was giving it. This feeling, this thing between us, was worth the pain.”

Mara was certainly not what I expected in terms of a heroine. She seemed detached and unsure in a way that made it hard to connect with her at first. However, once her story began to unfold and she started to grow into her own, I saw a bold, brave woman emerge. By the time the novel ended, I was definitely invested and I look forward to seeing her develop further as the series continues. Theo, on the other hand, captured my heart from the very beginning. He was mysterious, protective, and broody in all the right ways. I enjoyed watching him come unhinged around Mara and loved every tension-filled moment he endured trying to fight his feelings for her. I’m anxious to know more about Theo’s past and can only hope we’ll get to unravel this character a bit more in future books.

“My heart belongs to someone else even though I never meant to give it away. It’s just … his.”

As the first book in a fantasy series, Enchant had to focus on building Mara and Theo’s world, introducing the various players, and setting the scene for the rest of the series. Because of this, there wasn’t as much individual character development, but Micalea Smeltzer did a great job giving readers just enough to get them hooked and ensure they come back for more. I loved getting to meet all of the vibrant secondary personalities that colored this novel and am certainly curious as to how Mara and Theo’s journey will continue to unfold. Micalea Smeltzer’s writing is absolutely enchanting, effortlessly bringing her fantastical world to life and engaging readers in the vivid emotions of the story. I’ll definitely be back for more of this author’s snappy dialogue, entrancing imagery, and heartfelt prose. Enchant is an enthralling reading experience from start to finish!

RELEASE DAY REVIEW – Broken Hearts by Micalea Smeltzer

Title: Broken Hearts
Author: Micalea Smeltzer
Series: Light in the Dark #5
Release Date: August 4, 2017

After everything we’ve been through, I thought we could weather any storm.
But this is one thing neither of us ever saw coming.

Jace and Nova have learned to roll with the punches—they’ve had to. The last few years have been bliss-filled and better than they imagined, but they’re ready to take the next step.

The problem?

Life apparently has other plans.

Sometimes you have to fight for what you want, and for Jace and Nova they’ll have to battle this war together or lose it all in the process.

Micalea Smeltzer serves up one seriously angsty sequel to Jace and Nova’s story with Broken Hearts. Picking up shortly after Dark Hearts left off, Jace and Nova are living their happily ever after when life throws them a series of curveballs that would change their relationship forever. My heart ached and soared and sang and shattered as I experienced this journey alongside the couple. Micalea Smeltzer definitely didn’t pull any punches, putting Jace and Nova through the wringer repeatedly over the course of this story. Through it all, their electric chemistry and significant connection continued to outshine the darkness, bringing a much-needed sense of hope to an otherwise emotional rollercoaster. This couple continued to captivate me with their delightfully snarky banter and unexpectedly sweet moments, ensuring that I was once again riveted to this novel from start to finish.

“Sometimes we wait for things because we’re scared. I don’t want to go through life denying myself things because I’m scared. That’s not me. It’s not us. We’re wild and chaotic.  A storm that can’t be contained.”

Jace and Nova both go through some serious growth as their story progressed, surprising me at every turn with their strength and incredible resilience. I loved seeing this couple come unhinged, even if it meant completely obliterating my heart in the process. There was something so beautiful about their unmistakable vulnerability. Both characters felt utterly raw and undeniably genuine, making it easy to relate to their heartache and invest myself further in their journey. While I definitely found myself cursing the author a time or two as I read, there was no doubt that this couple had the kind of real, gritty and unapologetic love that would see them through any storm. The obstacles Jace and Nova faced in this book only served to further the depth of their connection and left me with no choice but to fall harder for this duo than ever before.

“Confession—” I whisper and he turns his attention to me. “I used to dream in black and white but now it’s in color, and it’s all because of you.”

I absolutely adored seeing more of Cade, Rae, Thea and Xander – their presence and role in the story giving Broken Hearts that overwhelming feeling of family I’ve come to love from this collection of colorful characters. Although decidedly darker than previous books in the series, Broken Hearts managed to capture all of Micalea Smeltzer’s signature sass, sizzle and sweetness. This book made me laugh and cry and swoon, guaranteeing that my heart wouldn’t be the same by the time all was said and done. From the enchanting writing to the whirlwind pacing, everything about this story was perfect for Jace and Nova. The world Micalea Smeltzer has so effortlessly brought to life with this novel is vibrant, breathtaking and overflowing with heart-stopping emotions. Topped off with the kind of epilogue that leaves your heart bursting at the seams, Broken Hearts is a powerful and stunning conclusion to Jace and Nova’s epic, must-read romance!

RELEASE DAY BLITZ & GIVEAWAY – When Constellations Form by Micalea Smeltzer

Title: When Constellations Form
Author: Micalea Smeltzer
Series: Light in the Dark #4
Release Date: March 31, 2017

First came marriage…
Then came love…
Now comes baby in a baby carriage.

So, at least we did one thing in order, right?

It’s been three years since Xander and Thea’s impromptu Vegas wedding. Since then, they’ve dealt with family drama, his grueling NFL schedule, and her college classes. Now that Thea’s graduated from college, it’s finally time for them to move out and start their life together.

Things couldn’t be any more perfect.

And then a curveball is thrown their way.

Midnight feedings and a screaming infant wasn’t a part of Thea’s five-year plan, but, suddenly, it’s very much her soon-to-be reality. Xander is thrilled at the prospect of parenthood while Thea can’t wrap her head around it.

But, ready or not, here comes baby.

Review

Micalea Smeltzer serves up the next installment in Xander and Thea’s story with When Constellations Form. This sassy, sweet and totally addictive read is the perfect ending for this inimitable couple. Micalea Smeltzer had me falling in love with Xander and Thea all over again, and as much as I wanted to devour this novel, I also never wanted it to end. Xander and Thea’s chemistry is as potent as ever, sizzling from the pages and keeping me grinning from start to finish. I absolutely adored seeing them settled into their happily ever after and ready to take on the next chapter in their lives, however unexpected it may have been. This couple’s connection is rock solid and together they take on life with the full weight of their adorably quirky personalities and all of their signature zeal. With graduation, a new house and pregnancy hormones running rampant, When Constellations Form is one seriously entertaining read.

“I’ve never met anyone that’s more my equal than you.”

I didn’t think it was possible to fall any harder for this phenomenal couple but Micalea Smeltzer quickly proved me wrong. Xander and Thea were as charming as ever, but with the challenge of impending parenthood before them, readers got to discover entirely new sides to both characters. Xander’s excitement at the prospect of becoming a father and his devotion to Thea and determination to help her see what an incredible mom she would be just about slayed me. He had me swooning with his sensitivity, thoughtfulness, and numerous displays of unconditional love. With this novel Xander effortlessly climbed the ranks of my favorite book boyfriends, leaving me utterly obsessed with his one-of-a-kind brand of perfection.

“Thea’s crazy, on a good day—but pregnant, she’s certifiable.”

While so much of this novel captured the typical, crazy Thea I had come to adore, Micalea Smeltzer further developed this character, giving her a depth that was both surprising and completely satisfying. The self-doubt she exhibited captured my heart. Her insecurities towards becoming a mother were genuine and relatable. I felt for her and understood her hesitancy based around her own childhood experiences. However, it was Thea’s resolve to give her child everything she never had that really stuck with me. This fierce and serious side to Thea absolutely blew me away and in the end, left me totally smitten with this lovable heroine.

“Sometimes I love you doesn’t feel big enough to encompass what I feel for her. She’s everything to me. The sun and the moon and the stars. She’s it all.”

When Constellations Form is not only the ideal next chapter for Thea and Xander, but it was the kind of sequel that leaves your heart overflowing with emotion. I loved every moment of their journey in this novel, laughing my way through Thea’s pregnancy and shedding a few tears as they grew into amazing parents. To make matters even sweeter, we get plenty more of Rae, Cade, Nova and Jace too. By the time all was said and done, I was bursting with the love I have for this fictional little family. When Constellations Form was smart, hilarious, incredibly heartfelt and uniquely Xander and Thea. Micalea Smeltzer is unquestionably at her best with this novel, delivering the final piece of this couple’s unforgettable journey with plenty of raw emotion, sparkling wit, and delightful banter. When Constellations Form is a fantastic addition to the Light in the Dark series and the perfect conclusion to Xander and Thea’s beautifully unique story.

Review

Just when I think I couldn’t love the Light in the Dark series any more, Dark Hearts came along and proved me wrong. Micalea Smeltzer delivers something broken, raw and undeniably genuine with Jace and Nova’s story. Their journey is hesitant, unexpected and hits readers with all of the sassy sweetness and delicious sizzle I’ve come to love from this talented author. Jace and Nova are made for heartache and yet they create something real and untouchable together. I absolutely adored their deep friendship, easy banter and sparkling chemistry. Their insecurities and shared stubbornness led to a push a pull that was utterly addictive. Even beneath the obvious chemistry, something more significant built between Jace and Nova. It was this promising, inexplicable quality that had me so intrigued by this couple and kept me riveted to their story.

“But I think we both know we’re different … damaged … and that makes a relationship impossible. Nothing good can come from something so broken.”

Jace was nothing like I expected. While he certainly had his own personality in the previous books, Micalea Smeltzer completely unraveled this character in Dark Hearts. I absolutely loved seeing Jace in his element as he wrote and performed his music. Paired with his possessive and protective behavior towards Nova and his surprisingly easygoing nature when it came to his friends, I was completely smitten. Micalea Smeltzer did a fantastic job at exploring Jace’s family life, his past and what made him so resistant to a relationship. I loved how effortlessly Nova seemed to break through his walls. Together they grew confident in both their relationship and in who they were as individuals. I loved seeing Jace set in contrast to Cade and Xander. While he definitely seemed to fit within the group, his quirks, personality and distinctive voice made him every bit the individual.

“It’s easy to notice something when it’s like looking in a mirror.”

Nova was Jace’s perfect match in every way. For all of his delicious angst and broody behavior, she appeared mysterious and somewhat emotionally detached. However, this couple seemed to ignite something deep within one another that burned hot and quickly spread, engulfing every other aspect of their lives in its fiery grasp until they were both burning brightly. Nova gave as good as she got and the resultant banter was adorable, entertaining, and laced with sexual tension. Just like Jace, Nova had her own demons to deal with in this book and Micalea Smeltzer had some big surprises in store when it came to her history and personal heartbreak. Although I guessed pretty early on what Nova’s secret was, I still enjoyed watching as her past resurfaced and took both her and Jace on an emotional rollercoaster.

“He kisses me like I’m everything he’s ever wanted and hoped for. It’s a different kind of kiss. One full of fear, and longing, and regret, and passion. I never want it to end.”

Dark Hearts was well paced, exquisitely written and overflowing with emotion. Each addition to this series stands on its own but it also fits within the emotional context of the series as a whole and Dark Hearts was certainly no exception. Micalea Smeltzer expertly rekindles the feeling of family that makes this series so spectacular. We get to see the whole crazy crew together a lot in this novel and it made my heart incredibly happy. Their good-natured teasing, genuine concern, total acceptance and unconditional love for one another was absolutely breathtaking and I’m always a little sad to see it come to an end with the final page of the book. Jace, Nova and the rest of Micalea Smeltzer’s inimitable characters will be back as the series continues but until then, I’ll be holding onto Dark Hearts and all of the things it made me feel.

(It’s recommended that you read The Lies That Define Us before reading this book)

Review

Micalea Smeltzer delivers a sweet, heartfelt and fun addition to the Us Series with A Love Like Ours. From the moment we first met Talia and Ollie, I was intrigued. Their tried and true love had begun when they were just kids and together they’d already weathered so many storms. By the time I’d finished reading The Lies that Define Us, I knew I needed more of this hilariously adorable couple. Micalea Smeltzer did not disappoint, giving readers the glimpse into Talia and Ollie’s story that we so desperately craved and taking us further into their happily ever after with A Love Like Ours. Talia and Ollie were every bit the playful and exuberant couple I’d come to love, but there was also an emotional depth to their connection that caught me by surprise and took my breath away.

“What happened that night left a scar inside me, but the thing about scars is the spot becomes stronger than it was before.”

I absolutely adored Talia. She was everything I’d hoped she’d be and so much more. Her kindness, compassion and utter sweetness came through as she narrated this story. I enjoyed seeing Ollie through her eyes. She gave him a depth I hadn’t expected, making him so much more than the laidback goofball we’d come to know. There were in fact many moments where I absolutely swooned for the seemingly carefree surfer. Talia herself carried a heavy emotional burden going into this story, but Micalea Smeltzer was careful not to let it weigh her down. She still came across as likable and fun but her issues also gave her an authenticity that made her easily relatable. She owned her insecurities and fears, relaying them to the reader and painting a vibrant picture of a woman who was raw, vulnerable and incredibly brave. Together, Talia and Ollie brought out the best in one another. They were true partners in life, ready for adventure and impossible not to root for.

“I never believed in love at first sight. But in that moment, I believed him, and I knew without a doubt that boy was my everything.”

This story was definitely an emotional rollercoaster, but more than anything it was a beautiful, life-affirming journey of healing and love. Micalea Smeltzer’s writing was utterly enchanting, taking me along for the ride and ensuring my complete investment in Talia and Ollie’s happily ever after. Filled with humor, heartbreak and an overall sense of wanderlust, A Love Like Ours is the kind of story that captivates and charms and I was thrilled to have fallen under its spell. I devoured this book in one sitting, lost to the laughter and love that poured so effortlessly from the pages. Breathtaking imagery, lyrical prose and a delightful sense of humor brought this story to life and filled my heart with a sense of undeniable satisfaction and warmth. Micalea Smeltzer truly captured the spirit of this couple with A Love Like Ours and I can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve next for the Us Series!

When Stars Collide_3

Review

Micalea Smeltzer has truly outdone herself with Xander and Thea’s steamy, fun, and totally irresistible journey. When Stars Collide is a vibrant story that is equal parts romantic comedy and new adult romance, delivering all of the humor and heartfelt emotion I’ve come to adore from this incredible author. Since meeting them in Rae of Sunshine, I’ve been anxiously awaiting this couple’s novel and I’m thrilled to say I was not disappointed. From the very first page I was completely consumed by the crazy adventure Micalea Smeltzer had laid out for these two characters, finding myself wholly invested in Thea and Xander’s undeniable connection and utterly addicted to their sizzling chemistry. Overflowing with delicious sexual tension, adorable flirtations, surprisingly tender moments, and plenty of amusing banter, When Stars Collide is a sparkling story of friendship, family, and fate.

“Something tells me Xander’s just made the first move in a calculated chess match, and I have no idea how to play chess. I’m screwed.”

If there is one thing I always look forward to from Micalea Smeltzer it’s unraveling her complex and carefully constructed characters. Xander and Thea were no exception and I loved getting to know these two over the course of their story. While Thea was every bit the smart, sassy firecracker I figured she’d be, I enjoyed exploring the insecurities and vulnerabilities that made her feel so genuine. She was tangible and easy to relate to, making her an instant favorite and impossible not to root for. Xander, on the other hand, took me by complete surprise. Not only did he capture my heart with his sweet words and fierce love for Thea, but he was also smart, driven, and funny – with just the right amount of blush-inducing cockiness thrown in to make readers melt. Together, Xander and Thea were an unforgettable duo and Micalea Smeltzer did a fantastic job developing this couple so that readers could easily connect with them and invest in their happily ever after.

“… sometimes we get caught in the every day and forget to think about the tomorrows. The tomorrows become the forevers so don’t ignore them.”

Micalea Smeltzer’s writing is as enchanting and colorful as ever, weaving its magic and keeping me hooked with its sarcastic dialogue and socially relevant humor. Starting off with a Vegas adventure, When Stars Collide delivered all of the heat and hilariously awkward moments of a secret friends-to-lovers, co-worker romance with a sibling’s forbidden best friend. But without all of the over-the-top, cringe worthy drama that readers usually associate with those particular plotlines. Micalea Smeltzer expertly sampled various components of these popular tropes to create something captivating, original, and full of feels. Thea and Xander’s world was made complete with a furry new addition that warmed my heart along with the return of beloved characters from Rae of Sunshine. Fresh, feisty, and delightfully sexy, When Stars Collide will make you laugh hard, feel deeply, and absolutely swoon before leaving you desperate for more!

Holy mother of all hangovers.

I’d succumbed to the lure of Vegas and gotten completely wasted. Granted, that’s what everyone did in Las Vegas but I like to think I usually have more sense than the social norm.

I rub my eyes and blink them open. The hotel room comes into formation around me. The walls are a warm golden color and the flat screen on the wall plays some home improvement show. I can see the bathroom from the bed, the tiled walls and large soaking tub.

I roll over onto my side, hoping I can sleep off the hangover, and reel back.

“Oh my God,” I cry, flailing in bed.

My legs kick the sleeping guy beside me.

Not just any sleeping guy.

Oh no.

Xander Kincaid, my brother’s best friend, lays in the bed beside me.

His dark hair tumbles over his forehead and his cheeks are covered with several days worth of scruff. His chest is bare and…holy shit. He’s naked.

I look down.

Oh God, I’m naked too.

“What’s wrong?” He asks, reaching his left hand out to pull me closer to him. That’s when I see it.

“Is that a wedding band?” I scream shrilly.

His eyes narrow. “You don’t fucking remember?”

I shake my head and look at my own hand. A thin silver band rests on my finger. “What did we do?

He sits up in bed and I try to ignore how adorably rumpled he looks with his hair sticking up.

Everything begins flooding back to me in quick bursts.

Drinks.

Kissing.

Laughter.

Confessions of love and desire.

A wedding chapel.

Vows.

Rings.

A contract.

“We’re married,” I whisper. “Holy shit.” It’s all I’ve ever wanted—to be with Xander, but not like this. Never like this. “My brother is going to kill us.”

The Game That Breaks Us

Synopsis

Hockey’s bad boy needs to clean up his reputation…

Bennett James has built his career at being the best, on and off the ice, and now it’s come back to bite him. The media has turned against him, and with a near career-ending injury, he needs to clean up his act and prove that he’s serious about the game. For Bennett, working with his old coach at his alma mater feels like a step back, but it might be just what he needs.

…and she’s going to help him do it.

Grace Wentworth has always been the good girl, and she’s tired of that stigma. She wants to prove that she can get down and dirty with the best of them. The problem? She doesn’t know how.

Bennett will teach the good girl how to be bad, if she pretends to be his goody two-shoes girlfriend in front of the media.

But what happens when the game becomes real?

The Game that Breaks Us_1

Review

The Game that Breaks Us is another fantastic Us Series novel from Micalea Smeltzer. Bennett and Grace’s story exemplifies the new adult genre, transporting readers to Grace’s college campus and highlighting the trials and triumphs of stepping out on your own for the first time. These two were enchanting right from the start, effortlessly reeling me into their world of unavoidable fame, unexpected feelings, and sour patch kids. Where Bennett was wild, Grace was tame and together they made the perfect match. Their instant spark grew with each passing page until their undeniable connection had me absolutely hooked on their happily ever after. Flirtatious banter, adorable adventures, and swoon-worthy moments of honesty filled this novel, taking me through a gamut of emotions as I experienced their journey.

“I don’t think this is goodbye, Grace. Something tells me I’ll see you again.”

Micalea Smeltzer has a talent for writing memorable characters that are both out of reach enough to be utterly intriguing and genuine enough to be relatable. Grace and Bennett were certainly no exception, each of them charming me instantly and making me feel deeply as they grew in different ways over the course of this story. Bennett was a fun character to unravel. With Grace he seemed to be a direct contradiction to all of the circulating rumors so I made it my mission to figure him out. The more time Bennett spent with Grace the more she grounded him, highlighting his true nature. I quickly fell for the bad boy who turned out to be pretty darn sweet and a whole lot sexy. His relationship with his family and the rediscovery of his love of hockey served to further expose the normal guy beneath the limelight and it was that authentic, lovable man that I swooned over.

“Something tells me that anyone that falls in love with Bennett gets their heart broken, and I don’t want to be added to that list.”

Grace was equal parts the girl next door and the unattainable product of famous parents, a dichotomy that was fascinating to explore. Just as Grace brought Bennett back down to earth, Bennett helped Grace to let go. I absolutely adored seeing Grace experience life, make mistakes, and go a little crazy. Her parent’s fame and their subsequent overprotectiveness left her hesitant to step outside the lines, but with Bennett by her side she learned to live in the moment and laugh at herself. Grace’s roommate Elle provided a sharp contrast to Grace’s soft demeanor but as they got to know one another and recognized their similarities I found myself admiring the growth of Grace’s character. Elle made her bold and sure and brave in a deeply satisfying way. Grace’s insecurities and surprising vulnerability made her that much more genuine and by the end of the novel she was someone entirely tangible.

“I’m scared I’ll ruin this.”

While the fake relationship storyline isn’t anything new, Micalea Smeltzer infuses so much of her own style into this story that it felt fun and fresh. Micalea’s own brand of drama ensured a few surprise turns that not only kept me reading but also gave Bennett and Grace’s journey an added depth. Filled with a great cast of secondary characters, Micalea Smeltzer brings her fictional world to life with the easy dialogue, socially relevant humor, and a whole lot of feeling. As always, we get plenty of adorable family moments with the characters from Micalea Smeltzer’s other novels in this story. She somehow manages to make each of her books feel like coming home and it never ceases to solidify my connection to the characters and the world they live in. The Game that Breaks Us left me with all of the familiar, warm and fuzzy feelings that inevitably have me wanting more. Well paced, wonderfully written, and absolutely sparkling, Micalea Smeltzer has another hit on her hands with The Game that Breaks Us.

BENNETT

There are angry drunks.

Horny drunks.

Loud drunks.

Sad drunks.

Silly drunks.

Happy drunks.

And reckless drunks.

Grace is a silly drunk.

“Another!” she declares, slamming her last glass on the table and hiccups, then giggles.

“Nah, I think you’re good,” I tell her, trying not laugh.

She pouts. “I want more.”

I shake my head. “Maybe later.” More like never, but I don’t tell her that. The girl is a lightweight, and there’s no way she’ll be able to stomach anything else and still function.

“You’re such a fun sucker.”

I laugh. “I don’t hear that one often.”

She glances down at dance floor. “I’m going to dance.” Before I can blink, she’s up out of her chair, heading for the exit of the VIP room.

“Like hell you are,” I mutter under my breath, storming after her.

When I get to the hall, she’s already gone. I look left and then right so fast that my head probably blurs. How can someone in heels that high walk that fast? It can’t be humanly possible.

“Fuck,” I curse, tearing at my hair. I practically run down the stairs into the club and of-fucking-course she’s disappeared yet again, swallowed whole by the crowd. The chances of me finding her are slim to none, like finding a needle in a haystack. But I never give up, and I’ll burn down the damn haystack if that’s what it takes to find the needle.

I shove my way through the crowd, my eyes searching every person I pass.

“Dammit, Grace. Where the fuck are you?”

Panic rises inside me and I never panic. But the thought that Grace is drunk off her ass and lost in here is killing me. If she gets hurt, or some guy gropes her, it’s my fault.

“Hey, watch where you’re going.” Some beefy ass dude shoves me away. I’m tempted to punch the fucker in the face but I have more important matters at hand.

I spot a flash of glossy brown hair in a ponytail and grab the girl’s shoulder. “Grace?” She looks up at me, her blue eyes pissed off. I immediately let go. “Not Grace.”

I move along the dance floor, but she’s nowhere to be found. I’m beginning to worry that she left, and the thought of her outside wandering the streets alone actually scares me.

I head toward the bar to find Danicka in the hope that maybe she’s seen Grace.

That’s when I finally spot her, leaning over the bar speaking to one of the male bartenders. The guy grins and she throws her head back and laughs.

Oh, hell no.

I storm forward. “What do you think you’re doing, Princess?”

She nearly collapses in my arms. “Bennett, I was just talking to Peter here thanking him for the delicious drinks.”

“Danicka made your drinks, remember?” I tell her, holding onto her waist so she doesn’t fall.

“Ugh, Porn Star, that’s right. I remember now.” She taps her forehead.

“Come on, we’re leaving.” I start to drag her away.

“No,” she cries, pulling out of my arms. “I want to dance. Dance with me, Bennett.”

I lower my head, silently cursing Grace and this whole “Bennett’s Guide to Being Bad” thing.

“Fine. One dance,” I tell her, holding up one finger and wiggling it.

“Yay!” she cries, bouncing up and down. She all but tackles me, wrapping her thin arms around my neck and hugging me. “Your chest is so hard,” she says in her alcohol-induced haze.

“I thought you wanted to dance,” I remind her, pushing softly against her shoulders.

“Aren’t we dancing?” Her words slur.

“Oh, yeah. Totally dancing.”

“You’re lying.” She pulls away, her eyes glassy. Her pink lips pucker in a frown. “I’m going to go find someone who really wants to dance with me.” She starts to flee into the crowd but I grab her arm and she ricochets back into my chest. She looks up at me with wide doe eyes. “That wasn’t nice.”

I lower my head, my lips skimming her ear. “You wanna dance, Princess? You dance with me.”

Character Interview

The Game that Breaks Us Grace Bio The Game that Breaks Us Bennett Bio

Interviewer: Bennett, do you think you can ever forgive your former coach for everything he did to you?

Bennett: (squirms in his seat) Maybe this makes me weak, but I’m sorry, I don’t think I can.

(Grace grabs his hand, entwining their fingers together, and gives him an encouraging smile)

Interviewer: Grace, have your parents accepted Bennett? Bennett, did you have to do anything to win them over?

Grace: (looks at Bennett with a wistful smile) Once the truth came out about everything, and I explained that he’s the man I love, they were accepting. My dad still gives him a hard time, but that’s just my dad. He means it more as a joke than anything else.

Bennett: He made me eat these gross ketchup flavored chips, then smacked me on the shoulder, and said I was part of the family now—so I guess that’s all I really had to do to win him over. (chuckles) I’ve learned the man loves ketchup. If I’d known that beforehand I would’ve surprised him with an antique bottle of the stuff and called it a day. Those chips were gross.

Interviewer: We know that you two are living together for the summer, so fill us in on how that’s going? Has it changed your relationship any by living together?

Grace: (shrugs) I don’t think it’s changed much—other than learning to live with each other’s quirks. Like Bennett always leaves his toothbrush on the sink and it drives me nuts.

Bennett: And she always leaves coffee mugs sitting around. (kisses her cheek)

Grace: So far it’s been really good, though. I like waking up in his arms.

Bennett: (smirks) Of course you do, sweetheart. These arms are what dreams are made of. (looks at interviewer) have you seen my abs? I’ve heard they’re lickable.

(Interviewer blushes and stutters a response. Grace smacks his arm and they dissolve into laughter.)

Interviewer: Now that Bennett is playing professionally again, and you’ll soon be returning to college fulltime, how do you think that will effect your relationship?

Grace: He was already back with his team for the last few months of the school year—so I think it won’t change that much from what we were used to. He’s busy with hockey and I’m busy with school, but we’ll always make time for each other.

Interviewer: Bennett, are you still in touch with Coach Harrison? How’s Michael—the player on the college team you became friends with?

Bennett: Yeah, of course I still talk to Coach. He’s the man. We’ve always stayed in contact—that’s why I was able to train with him when everything fell to shit. Michael is going into the draft, and I know he’s going to go to a good team. He’s also flirting way too much with my sister. (huffs in agitation)

Grace: Do you think he’ll end up on your team?

Bennett: Maybe. It’d be cool.

Interviewer: It looks like we have time for one more question. If you could offer anyone out here one piece of advice, what would it be?

Bennett: Never give up on your dreams.

Grace: Trust your gut. It will always lead you in the right direction.

Interviewer: Okay folks, that’s all we have time for today. I hope you enjoyed the interview. Grace and Bennett, thank you so much for stopping by to chat with us.

Grace: We were happy to do it.

Bennett: What she said…but if you skew what we say like all these other asshat media people I will end you.

Interviewer: (gulps) Of course not. Everything will stay 100% as you said it.

Bennett: (nods) Good. Thank you. (takes Grace’s hand again and bends to kiss her)

Lies That Define Us_4

Review

Micalea Smeltzer delivers a heartfelt and emotional journey of self-discovery, friendship, and love with The Lies That Define Us. Liam and Ari are an unlikely pair with an immediate chemistry that easily captivated me. From the start, I was addicted to their push and pull, Liam and Ari’s shared stubbornness lending itself to plenty of tension that inevitably built to steamy levels. Evident from their initial disregard for each other, the unexpected chemistry brewing seemed to unsettle them in a way that made me absolutely giddy to see how things would unfold. Ari and Liam were frustrating, entertaining, and undeniably genuine – taking my emotions on a rollercoaster ride as I experienced their journey alongside them. I adored seeing more of Remy and Mathias, one of my favorite couples from Micalea’s Willow Creek series. In a way, it made this story feel like coming home. Well-written, thoughtful, and full of surprises, Micalea Smeltzer continues to wow me with her lovable characters, their heartbreaking pasts, and the breathtaking journeys they endure in the name of love.

“Liam was clearly a complicated guy. A guy I should stay a million miles away from. But I’d always been attracted to danger, and some habits die-hard. And others? Well, they kill you.”

After meeting Liam in The Road That Leads To Us, I knew he was a character I had to unravel. Closed off to everything and everyone, Liam clearly held onto something painful that made him jaded. Micalea Smeltzer uses Ari to peel back the layers of this brooding character, unearthing a man with a kind soul and an incredibly generous heart. Ari’s personal journey affected me deeply. There is a darkness in her past that shows itself through small gestures, strange habits, and her timid overall demeanor. Micalea Smeltzer cultivated a character transformation in Ari that is absolutely stunning. Ollie, Talia, and Liam encourage an independence that lets Ari discover the extent of her strength while providing the kind of unconditional support that allows her to jump without the fear of falling. When Ari and Liam’s worlds collide, they recognize a pain in one another that inspires an uneasy friendship. I absolutely adored watching that friendship expose something substantial and life altering, leaving both characters irrevocably changed.

“Because the truth is just that – the truth. It’s fact. Indisputable. With lies we can delude ourselves into believing something that doesn’t really exist. If you tell yourself something enough, it begins to feel like the truth, but that’s just another lie.”

Liam and Ari’s story is different from others Micalea Smeltzer has written. It’s haunting in a way that gives this novel an emotional weight I never expected. The mystery of Ari’s past added a touch of suspense and plenty of intrigue, keeping me riveted and determined to uncover the truth. The secondary characters played a huge part in this book and I easily fell in love with each and every one of them. Ollie and Talia made my heart soar with their unwavering kindness. I hope we’ll get to hear their story at some point because I utterly adored them. Liam’s close-knit group of friends was absolutely hilarious; they kept me laughing with their carefree attitudes and teasing banter. The easy camaraderie they shared and their unconditional support of one another spoke volumes for the kind of person Liam was and through these relationships Micalea Smeltzer was able to bring this character into sharp focus. The Lies That Define Us is truly a one of a kind journey that will break your heart and make it soar. You’ll fall to pieces and fall in love only to wind up wanting more.

Lies That Define Us_3

Excerpt

I laid my head against the cool glass of the bus window and watched the rain slick against it. The water beaded against the glass and then slid down in little rivulets that I traced with my finger.

I wouldn’t miss the rain.

I wouldn’t miss anything about Oregon.

That place wasn’t my home. Never had been, and never would be.

With a jolt, the bus roared to life, startling me, but I relaxed a moment later when we pulled out of the station.

Freedom was so close to being mine.

I watched the people on the street as the bus pulled away. I was searching for buzzed brown hair and eerie black eyes, but he wasn’t amongst them.

He didn’t know I’d left yet.

And hopefully, by the time he did, I’d be long gone.

I adjusted my hoodie so my face was hidden from the other people on the bus and wiggled around, settling myself in for the long ride to California.

Unlike the other people on the bus, I didn’t have a cellphone to keep me company. Cellphones were traceable so I’d ditched mine. I couldn’t risk him finding me, because if he had I was certain he’d kill me. He would’ve eventually killed me if I stayed, too. My only option had been to take the risk of running away. I would have rather died on my terms than his, but if everything went according to plan, I’d be free and he’d never find me.

He called me Scarlett, but Scarlett didn’t exist.

Scarlett was a lie.

My name was Ariella, and I was reclaiming my stolen life.

No emotions, no hearts broken.

But nothing is that easy.

When the unexpected happens, Karlie and Holden are rocked to the core.

Karlie will run.

But will Holden fight for her?

Review

Undeniable was everything I’d hoped Karlie and Holden’s story would be and then some. Having first met them in Katy and Jared’s story, I knew this book would be an adventure and Micalea Smeltzer did not disappoint. Having known each other practically their whole lives, Karlie and Holden have a connection that runs deep, deeper than either would like to admit. Their obvious attraction and strong feelings for one another built a tension that practically busted from the pages of this book. It was all too easy to invest myself in this couple’s happily ever after. Micalea Smeltzer wrote a chemistry that was electric and undeniable, making it impossible not to feel for these two. Karlie and Holden share an easy friendship, palpable lust, and witty banter that made their story absolutely shine. From start to finish I felt every moment of Undeniable, reveling in the laugher, heartache, and overwhelming emotion of Karlie and Holden’s journey.

“Holden, was Mr. Playboy, and Jared would kill me if he found out about this. Correction: He’s kill Holden. And Holden was far too beautiful to be killed.”

Karlie is just as feisty as I knew she’d be, keeping Jared on his toes and pushing Holden’s buttons. It was fun to watch her grow and spread her wings in this book. Jared has always been so protective of his sister, so I really enjoyed seeing her taking a stand and establishing herself as her own person. As much as I adored the strength she exhibited, I found myself relating just as much to her vulnerabilities and insecurities. Micalea Smeltzer really gave Karlie depth in this book and I loved experiencing the growth of this character. Holden, on the other hand, surprised me with his angst and hidden scars. In Unraveling he always seemed so cocky and arrogant, so I was pleasantly surprised to discover the true complexity of Holden’s character. As Micalea revealed Holden’s past to us, I found myself feeling for him in a way I never expected. His darkness gave him an edge that seemed to validate the personality and emotional void he publically displayed. Both of these characters really came into their own in Undeniable, imprinting themselves on me totally.

“You should spend less time worrying about messing everything up and spend it living in the moment instead, because every minute we spend together is something to treasure.”

The direction this storyline took was full of surprises. While I enjoyed seeing Karlie and Holden finally give into their feelings of lust, I absolutely adored watching their worlds being irrevocably altered as they began to recognize the truth beneath the lust. The additional moments with Katy and Jared felt like icing on the cake for me as I easily lost myself in the emotional rollercoaster that was Undeniable. Seeing more of their happily ever after juxtaposed with Karlie and Holden’s struggle to find their own gave Undeniable a poignancy that simply felt right. Micalea Smeltzer continues to blow me away, her writing getting better and better with time. Her words seemed to effortlessly capture the tone of the storyline and build the world of Undeniable in a way that was entirely tangible for the readers. Once again, Micalea has swept me away in her beautiful prose and vibrant imagery, consuming me with her heartfelt and emotionally charged story of love, loss, and self-discovery.
