hat-trick

Synopsis

One accident – a freaking car crash.

That’s all it took to send my brother’s and my life into a tailspin with no end in sight. I was going to be something. I was going to be the best. I had the Olympics in my sights. And it all went to shit in one flash. Brayden wasn’t ready to raise a younger sister when I was thrown into his lap. He had his life and everything going for him. Thankfully, he was still drafted to his dream hockey team. The same one dad played for when we were growing up.

It took time, but I started to get better, started to open up, started skating and even dating again. I even thought I found the perfect guy for me.

Isn’t it funny how guys hit on you when they know you’re not available, but when you’re single they won’t give you the freaking time of day? I guess the game is more fun that way. And for the captain of my brother’s team, that’s exactly what I was. A hat trick is three goals in hockey. Some say three is a crowd and they might be right.

I was Gavin Hayes’ unobtainable goal.

Bs Review

Hat Trick is a quick, sweet, insta-love hockey romance with a bit of a forbidden twist. Uncomplicated and fairly angst-free, this is the kind of story you can pick up when you need something light to make you smile. Told from the point of view of Myla, her brother, and his teammate Gavin, Kristen Hope Mazzola packs plenty of sassy moments and tension-laden encounters to entertain readers with this one. There were moments where this book really shined, where I could see the potential of the story and even found myself excited at the prospect of a series featuring the other players. Driven mostly by the relationships between the various characters, these instances of pure camaraderie, honest emotion, and heartfelt storytelling kept me flipping the pages.

“I didn’t get all dressed up to actually Netflix and chill, Gavin.”

Unfortunately, as a whole, Hat Trick was lacking for me. I prefer my storylines to have more depth in terms of emotion and my characters to be more extensively developed. While there was the underlying tragedy that seemed to connect the characters, they never actually explored these connections sufficiently enough for them to take root and hold any meaning to the story as a whole. I also felt like we barely scratched the surface with Gavin, never knowing why exactly his previous relationship ended or what kind of man he really was off the ice. There was also quite a bit of hockey lingo and slang thrown in, which as a lifetime hockey fan, I could appreciate, but would probably disconnect the average reader from the story without any sort of explanation of the terms. The time jumps were abrupt and oftentimes skipped over some serious opportunities for development, not only making the storyline feel disjointed but also pulling me out of the story almost completely. The absence of any major conflict between the couple and the incredibly rapid resolution of the story gave Hat Trick an overall lackluster feeling.

“Rumors get started with a kernel of truth, I guess.”

To be fair, Kristen Hope Mazzola’s writing is great. There is a lot of humor, heart, and just enough delicious heat to make for a well-balanced story. The premise was certainly intriguing and Myla had something special about her that was simply enchanting. Her personal struggles colliding with Gavin’s history could have made for an intensely emotional and incredibly touching journey but I think everything about Hat Trick was just too rushed to fully appreciate the true capacity of this story. I will say, if you like uncomplicated, feel-good romance Hat Trick might just hit the spot for you. Kristen Hope Mazzola delivered a great group of characters and hinted at some fun relationships that gave Hat Trick that exciting team spirit only a sports romance can.

Cs Review

I needed a novel all about hockey to fulfill a challenge read so when I heard that Kristen Hope Mazzola would be writing one, I knew just what I’d be selecting. The premise of Hat Trick where a player’s sister falls for the captain of the team was the perfect equation for a forbidden romance I wouldn’t be able to get enough of. As I dove in and really got into the relationship that formed between Myla and Gavin, I adored the chemistry and youthfulness to these two. Gavin was protective and steadfast in his feelings, while Myla was returning to who she was before her accident. However, there were several things about Hat Trick that I could just not get past, which resulted in the rating. For being such a short novel, there were a lot of plot lines being introduced. I found myself wishing that Mazzola explored some aspects deeper, i.e. some of the events that could have introduced a source of conflict to strengthen the relationships in the novel. Furthermore, there were quite a few time jumps to contend with which made it really difficult to connect to the characters. I needed more of their histories in order to be able to fully see their transformations. Finally, some of the language used really alienated me as a reader. I wanted the hockey aspect of the novel, but as someone who doesn’t follow the sport, some of the terms used went right over my head. With a fun storyline, youthful characters, and fresh writing, Hat Trick goes by in the blink of an eye. Though it wasn’t rated higher for me, I did enjoy the story and have no doubt that others will as well.

RELEASE DAY BLITZ – Colt & Serena: A Hysterics Companion Novella by Kristen Hope Mazzola

Series: Hysterics #2
Release Day: June 24, 2016

Colt & Serena

Synopsis

Gay-for-pay, it’s not just a guy thing. I was knee deep in that seedy world for far too long. It was time, time to break away from that lifestyle and make something of myself that I could be proud of. Nothing else mattered once that tattoo gun was buzzing in my hand, that is until Colt – the guitar player from The Hysterics – waltz into the shop I was apprenticing for. He turned my world upside down and I wouldn’t change a damn thing.

**This Book is a Standalone. It is a companion novella to The Hysterics, a rock star romance.**

Colt and Serena_2

Review

The Hysterics return in this short, sexy story. Focusing on Colt and tattoo artist Serena, this story begins along the same timeline as The Hysterics and eventually jumps forward to show us a quick glimpse of the future. Kristen Hope Mazzola delivers plenty of steam with Colt & Serena. This couple falls in instant lust, unable to keep their hands off each other as they discover an unexpected connection between them. Their easy conversation made me grin and their compatible personalities had me immediately rooting for them. I loved the way Serena seemed to slip so seamlessly into Colt’s world, making her feel like part of The Hysterics family. Seeing more of Dane and Fallon was icing on the cake, taking me back to their story and reminding me why I enjoyed getting to know this colorful cast of characters so much.

“No one has ever had me questioning my entire life the way you have, and at the same time I’m addicted to the way you make me feel.”

Since Colt & Serena took place within the confines of The Hysterics storyline, I couldn’t help but notice some conflict between the two timelines that made it difficult to lose myself completely in this one. The short length of the story limits character development, but Kristen Hope Mazzola does include interactions and topics of conversation that hint at less obvious aspects of Colt and Serena’s personalities. Their shared aversion to marriage, Colt’s closeness with his family, and Serena’s desire to truly be cherished came through, allowing readers to get a better understanding of the characters. Much like Fallon in The Hysterics, Serena has a past she isn’t proud of but she’s created a life she loves with her fierce attitude and unwavering determination, making her easy to love. I would like to learn more about Serena’s life growing up and I’d love more time inside Colt’s head to unravel some of those emotions he keeps so close to the vest. Hopefully we will get to see more of this couple and the rest of The Hysterics in the future.

Excerpt

There was something utterly captivating about watching Serena pull her jeans off in the back seat of my 1974 Pontiac GTO. I barely let anyone into my car, let alone dreamed of potentially messing up the leather by having sex in it, but there was a first time for everything and if Serena wanted me this badly, I was not going to waste one second driving her back to my place.

With a fistful of her blonde hair, I pulled her down onto the seat so I could get on top of her. “You’re so beautiful.”

In the dimly lit car, I could barely make out all of her ink, but the mystery of her story was that much more intriguing. Shifting her a bit, I pulled her tank top over her head and slowly started to kiss down her collarbone. I wanted to enjoy every inch of her, taste her sweet skin, feel how much she longed for me. Goosebumps rose under my lips as she dug her nails into my shoulders.

“I want you inside me.” She moaned, but she was going to have to wait a minute for her wish to be granted.

Unspeakable

Synopsis

It’s finally my time.

Everyone has their damn breaking point, why did the president of my MC’s daughter have to be mine? She was everything I wanted, and nothing I could have. Being a prospect was hard enough. Living with my father that I had only known for a few years wasn’t making life any easier. And there I was, ready to jeopardize it all for love. I went to Vilas to figure out where I came from, little did I know that I wasn’t just going to be passing through. This life was pumping through my veins, I just didn’t know it until I walked into the Unacceptable’s bar for the first time.

Raine Hellock was my kryptonite and come hell or high water, I was going to figure out how to make her mine.

Unspeakable_2

Bs Review

Unspeakable picks up years after Unacceptable and Raine is all grown up. I enjoyed how strong, feisty, and incredibly stubborn she was, an obvious reflection of her parents. Her fire made me grin and I found myself thoroughly enjoying the grief she gave her parents. I adored getting to see Crickett and Abel well into their happily ever after and settled into their life with the Unacceptables MC. Determined to keep Raine from falling for an Unacceptables brother, Abel finds himself helpless to stop the developing relationship between Ryder and Raine, especially when they have such a solid friendship to build on. I’ll admit that the forbidden nature of their relationship gave them that extra spark and even their failed attempts at sneaking around were amusing. The less than warm and fuzzy feelings between Abel and Ryder added a tension to the story that definitely kept me intrigued. Unspeakable delved deeper into the inner workings of the MC, exposing some of the less than pleasant tasks and highlighting the more dangerous risks required of the brothers. I loved this aspect of the story – getting into the raw and gritty side of MC life and adding another dimension to Unspeakable.

“You’re my always, Ryder. You have my heart.”

While I liked both Raine and Ryder and enjoyed diving into their already established relationship, I definitely would have liked to explore these characters a bit more. I was curious as to how their friendship had grown over the years and what the tipping point was that had them seeing each other in a new light, especially considering Ryder’s role as a prospect and Abel’s rule that Raine was off limits. I wanted to understand what made them decide that the risk was worth it and see some growth from the characters. I did find myself falling in love with Ryder as I read. He was absolutely committed to proving his worth and fighting for Raine even though the consequences could destroy the only sense of family he had left in his life. Kristen Hope Mazzola also delivered plenty of steamy moments that balanced the emotional aspect of Ryder and Raine’s relationship, including plenty of delicious teasing and adorable flirtations. Kristen always introduces her secondary characters in a way that leaves me curious about them and Unspeakable was no exception. I found myself intrigued by some of the peripheral personalities and I hope we’ll be hearing their stories in the future. Unspeakable is a quick, one-sitting read that will make your heart race and leave a grin on your face.

Cs Review

I’m not one to drool over every single motorcycle romance that releases, but I definitely find myself intrigued by Kristen Hope Mazzola’s. There is some quality I can’t pinpoint about the Unacceptables that had me coming back for book two, and wanting more from a book three. Unspeakable is the story of Raine and Ryder, two characters who I wasn’t sure about initially, but ultimately ending up burrowing their way into my heart.

“I had no idea what was going on with my club, I wasn’t allowed to be with my girl, and my life just felt completely out of whack.”

Mazzola’s way of introducing these two as a couple was interesting and honestly kind of fun. However, I will say that I was left curious as to how that initial spark exploded into a firework, especially given the personalities of these two characters. With the dynamic of who they are, and who Raine’s father is, we still got to see a little glimpse of them fighting for their relationship, so I did appreciate that aspect. Raine was spunky and independent, but also extremely loyal to her family. She was such a kindred spirit. I also really fell for Ryder because of how hard he fought to prove his worth. He wasn’t just prospecting into a club; he was fighting for the girl he wanted and I admired his tenacity. I did feel like there was more of a storyline in this book than in the first. There was a little more drama, tidbit more action, and I enjoyed feeling pulled more into the MC setting. I’m not sure if there will be a third book in the series, but I’ll definitely be clicking if there is. These novellas are the perfect afternoon reads to make your heart race and swoon!

“Anything you need, Abel, I’m your man.”

He flicked his cigarette butt onto the ground and stomped out the ember with his steel toed boot. “That’s what I am scared of.”

“You can trust me.”

He dug his hands deep into his pockets. “I know that, son, and that is what scares me the most. My fucking baby girl is going to go through what her mother, Crickett, and my mother went through, that never-ending fear of whether or not their man will make it home at the end of the day.”

“I’m not going to let her down.” I gritted my teeth. There was no fucking way I would put Raine through the pain of losing me.

“You can’t fucking promise that, Ryder. No outlaw can. Our women fight alongside us every goddamned day and there is no way to ease their minds. That’s a burden we all must carry.”

“Until my last breath, I am going to fight for her.”

Abel grabbed my shoulder. “I know. Now let’s go catch a fucking bad guy.”

Rough and Tumble

Synopsis

#WhoIsBoBriggs

That’s all I saw all over social media a few years after he dumped me for a super model and was the first round draft pick for the North Carolina Hogs.

I thought I loved Bo, way back when, but it was all too cliché. He was the star quarterback and I was the head cheerleader. High school sweethearts turned college romance that crumbled when our careers twisted into different paths, or so we thought.

Oh and did I mention, I am about to start photographing his team?!

FML…This is going to be interesting to say the least.

Bs Review

Rough & Tumble is a cute, quick, second chance romance. This short story felt like such a tease. When it was over all I wanted was more. I really enjoyed Bo and Peyton and the connection Kristen Hope Mazzola built between them. I’m a sucker for young love that gets rekindled as adults and this story definitely brought Bo and Peyton’s chemistry to life. I thought it was so clever the way in which they crossed paths again. It was different and memorable, allowing Bo to be Peyton’s knight in shining armor for the night. While I would have loved to see what their relationship was like in the past, the length of this story required Rough & Tumble to be incredibly focused on the here and now. Despite not being able to experience their shared history, Kristen Hope Mazzola relayed their familiarity and easy relationship in a way the reader could still appreciate. Aside from the emotional connection between Bo and Peyton, this story delivers some deliciously steamy moments, and a dose of just enough drama to keep me on my toes. Kristen Hope Mazzola definitely did a great job with this couple and I was surprised at my level of investment in so short a time. Rough & Tumble was a fun, light-hearted read that left me craving more from Bo and Peyton.

Cs Review

I’m never quite sure how to review novellas and short stories because inevitably, I always find myself wanting more, while still understanding that it’s made to be shortened. Rough &Tumble by Kristen Hope Mazzola is a light read about two characters who realize that they were happy with their teenage love. I absolutely adored how Bo and Peyton ended up bumping into each other for their rekindling; I certainly never expected it. While it could have been awkward and filled with tension, he played the hero which made me instantly take a liking to him. In that moment, readers established an understanding of the man he was, which made it ridiculously easy to see how Peyton could fall in love with him. I’ll be honest though, she seemed a little timid so I wasn’t sure how I would end up liking her. While I would have liked to see a little more ferocity and steadfastness in her actions, she definitely wasn’t a heroine I could ever dislike. I wish that we could have seen a little bit more of them in their careers, since I think you could have taken these two characters and switched it out with anything and it would have made sense to the story. However, I did find myself being drawn in and completely captivated by these two. Overall, Rough & Tumble is a fun short read that went through some ups and downs but left me wanting an expansion on their story, in the best of ways!

Excerpt

I was startled awake. I had been falling fast in my dream and right before I hit the bottom, my eyes flew open. I quickly started to look around the foreign room. I couldn’t remember anything past seeing Brit and Roxy’s empty seats next to me at the club the night before.

I was in someone’s bed in a room I had never been in in my life. I was dressed in a large black shirt and my underwear and that was it.

How’d I get that fucked up last night?

I rolled out of bed. Hoping to figure out where the heck I was, I peered out the window. I knew that I was downtown somewhere, but for the life of me I couldn’t place the streets and landmarks in my view.

I spun on my heels as I heard the door to the strange room open. My heart was pounding and I was holding my breath as I waited to see who was coming in.

What the hell?

Of course, Bo Briggs slowly started to make his way over to me. I was paralyzed. He was engaged. What in god’s name was I doing in his room?

“How are you feeling?” He handed me a bottle of water and a couple Advil. His light blond hair was shorter than it had been, and he looked downright military with his defined muscles, sleeves of tattoos, and crooked grin that always brought me to my knees.

“Fine.” I took the tiny pills and water from my hunky ex and chugged them down fast. In all reality, my head felt like it had been run over by a Mack truck. “What happened last night? Did we…?” I sunk onto the bed. Except for a few times in passing, it was the first time I had seen Bo in a few years. All the old buried feelings flooded me. I had known for a long time that I wasn’t over my ex, but I didn’t want him to ever know that.

“You were drugged last night at the club.”

My face felt hot, my palms turned clammy, and my head felt like it was about to explode. “What the fuck?” My voice crackled.

Crashing The Wedding

Synopsis

Well this is freaking great…

Right when my best friend’s wedding was in full swing, the flowers were paid for, the dresses were being tailored and the bachelorette party was planned and nonrefundable, the bomb gets dropped right on my doorstep at four in the morning.

“The Wedding is OFF!” Mags yelled right as I opened the door to my apartment.

Oh hell no! We’re not canceling these plans. I will make this work. I will get her and Randy on track to walking down that freaking isle. I am getting to go on a bachelorette weekend vacation to party with my best friend! This is happening whether Mags and Randy like it or not.

That’s what a best friend is for, right?!

**This Book is a Standalone. It is a companion novella to The Crashing Series and takes place before Crashing Back Down (book 1 in the series).**

Review

The only way I can describe this novella is bittersweet. My heart was in constant conflict. Having read the Crashing series, I already knew how this story would end and it made reading this short piece of Randy and Mags’ life that much more emotional. I really enjoyed Cali’s voice. She is fun, sassy, and absolutely loyal. I loved the way she and Mags took care of one another and it was made that much sweeter by the way she stood up for Mags and shared in her wedding day so completely. Their friendship was truly something special and it made me happy knowing that they had both found that unconditional acceptance and love in one another. Getting a small piece of Randy was heartbreaking. Getting a glimpse of his kindness and devotion (not to mention the sweetest wedding present) made my heart simultaneously soar and ache. I may have even shed some tears as I experienced their wedding day.

“When you find true love, wasting time is pointless.”

Despite the emotional weight of this moment in Mags and Randy’s life, Kristen Hope Mazzola managed to capture the excitement and anxiety preparing for the wedding. Cali and Mags made me grin as they enjoyed trying on their dresses, the bachelorette weekend, and spending time out with the boys. Cali’s easy-going attitude, snarky commentary, and mischievous nature was totally infectious and I found myself giggling at her hilarious and unfortunate adventures. She comes across vibrant and full-of-life, the perfect contrast to her steady and domesticated best friend. Things certainly got a little spicy when Kristen Hope Mazzola turned up the heat, but I’d expect nothing less from someone as outgoing and adventurous as Cali. I found myself becoming quite attached to this great character and I hope we’ll be getting more of her story in the near future. Crashing: The Wedding is short, sweet and full of feels. Kristen Hope Mazzola has left me wanting more of Cali and the rest of the Crashing series crew!

“May I have this dance?” Mitch extended his hand to me after throwing his napkin on his plate, and of course it was a twostep that came on.

I shoved out of my chair. “Why the heck not?”

The drinks had already started to go to my head as Mitch led me out onto the dance floor. The tent that had been set up in the yard was magnificent. There were twinkling lights strung up everywhere with a few chandeliers hanging about. The DJ had put beautiful lighting around the space to give it a nice purple hue.

“Try not to step on the shoes, they’re rented,” Mitch teased as he started to push me around.

I didn’t know if it was the alcohol or the wedding bliss that was swimming around, but as I looked up at Mitch as he twirled me around, I saw him in a completely different light. His dark hair, smoldering stare, chiseled jawline, beautiful tattoos, and smile that could last for days—it was all stunning to me.

Before my mind could overanalyze what my heart was doing, I was grabbing Mitch’s shirt and pulling his lips down to mine. Slowly, our lips connected. Smooth and soft at first, the sweet kiss then turned into hunger and lust. My tongue explored his mouth and his hand slid down my back to grip my ass.

Trying to catch his breath, Mitch pulled away from me. “Are you sure this is a good idea?”

Once his words registered, I took a step back. “Probably not.”

Mitch hugged me to his side. “If we are ever going to hook up, I don’t want either of us to be drunk when it happens.” He kissed my forehead and handed me off to Mags as she swished over to me. “Want a drink?” Mitch looked at both of us as we nodded.

Bs Review

Unacceptable is a quick, easy read that doses out just the right amount of sweetness and steam. Kristen Hope Mazzola delivers this stepbrother romance in a unique and satisfying way that even those unsure about the concept will be able to enjoy. Abel will have you melting in no time. This bad boy is oh so good and I loved every minute of his possessive, protective, and stubborn nature. Combine that with his sweet words and appropriately filthy mouth and he’ll have you ready to ride off into the sunset on the back of his bike. His instant connection to Crickett lights a fire that burns hotter as they get to know one another. When Crickett’s newly free and independent personality goes head to head with Abel’s alpha tendencies, their fire blazes, resulting in sarcastic banter, delicious flirting, and scorching encounters.

“Everyone can tell, Crickett. It’s not just about keeping our mouths shut. They can see it all over my face and yours. You’re mine. And that is that.”

I loved that Kristen Hope Mazzola garnered a feeling of total acceptance from the start. Everyone in this story has a history and not all of them are pretty, but Kristen allows these characters to acknowledge and overlook each other’s flaws. This sense of acceptance allowed me to believe in our couple’s whirlwind relationship. The past Crickett is running from gives her the hard edges and understanding heart necessary to accept the life she finds waiting for her, providing her journey a sense of credibility. Crickett’s character developed nicely over the course of this quick novel, leaving behind the girl who didn’t know unconditional love to find the part of herself that finally just belongs.

“What hurt you so badly, babe? Why are you running from something?”
I sighed into him. “I don’t know if I should put it into words or just let all the bad memories die in the past where they belong.”

This story moved quickly and with purpose. While we got hints of the stepbrother and MC storylines, Unacceptable was unquestionably focused on Crickett and Abel. Kristen Hope Mazzola fixated this story on the growth of the characters and the connection between them. She gave these two an instant connection that burned hot and fast, creating some serious sparks among the pages. The secondary characters were a ton of fun, adding another dimension entirely to this story. Holt, Rave, Raine, and the rest of The Unacceptables have me under their spell, and I hope this is not the last we’ll be seeing of them. Unacceptable is one of those books you can grab when you need a pick me up that you can finish in one sitting. Kristen Hope Mazzola has written a gem that is light, sexy, and engaging with this book.

Cs Review

I have been meaning to read a Kristen Hope Mazzola novel for a while now, so when a hot MC stepbrother was in the description, I knew that I’d jump at the opportunity. Unacceptable was a quick read that I found myself not wanting to put down. I may or may not have skipped a meal and sleep just so that I could devour it!

“I’ll be Prince Charming if you need one, but trust me, this prince has a rough side to him.”

Even though the story is described as an MC and a stepbrother romance, I think both aspects are done in an understated fashion. The stepbrother piece, which I can sometimes be hesitant about, was done in a way that actually somehow felt very normal. It wasn’t creepy or anything of that sort. I loved the MC portion because although there were clear traces of the club throughout the story, that’s not what it became about. Unacceptable had a much larger message and a soft side and I thought Mazzola’s execution was spot on.

“We all got some skeletons, Crickett. As long as we don’t let them define us then we can move on. Stop letting them have a hold on you. Don’t let them win.”

Cricket was one of the best heroines I have come across in a long time. She was searching for something and not afraid to take ownership of her life. She recognized that she deserved more and I absolutely loved that she wasn’t afraid to go after it. From the moment we met Abel, there was something about him that I fell in love with. He gave off this hard, protective shell but once you peeled back his layers, there was something so soft and gooey! These two together were just perfection. From the moment they met, readers could feel the sizzle and pop of fireworks, which definitely helped me to not want to put the book down.

“You’re not the only one that was freaking out. I thought I was losing you right when I finally had you.”

If you’re looking for a quick afternoon read with a little spice and a little action, look no further and pick up Unacceptable by Kristen Hope Mazzola. The characters are perfection, the storyline is not drama-filled just for the sake of a story, and there’s just something special about it. I am definitely looking forward to reading more from this author!

Synopsis

I should have freaking known.

How dense can one girl be?

If it’s too good to be true, then it is.

If he’s too nice, smiles too perfectly, says all the right things, then he probably isn’t prince charming. Nope. Of course he’d be freaking married. And I didn’t see it.

So here I am, in a city that I hate doing a shoot I don’t want to do.

Suck it up, Jolene.

That’s what I have to keep telling myself.

It’s time to swear of smooth talking men and just focus on the only true loves in my life: photography and Dozer, my dog.

Review

Stupid Hearts was just the dose of sexy fun I needed! Jolene is a vivacious personality, unafraid to go after what she wants. She doesn’t do attachments and she prefers it that way until her free spirit finds her in a compromising situation. Returning to her regularly scheduled life as a photographer, she agrees to do a photo shoot, which brings her up close and personal with a familiar face. I absolutely loved this twist in the story and I felt a little giddy when I realized who had just come crashing back into Joey’s life. Finn was a fantastic character, enjoying his life and career when he becomes completely enraptured by Joey. Kristen Hope Mazzola did an incredible job crafting the chemistry between these two. From the moment they meet until the very last page the lust just radiates off of this couple. Their witty banter, sexy flirting, and sizzling hot moments had me permanently hooked.

Novellas are tricky given their limited length, but Kristen Hope Mazzola managed to tell Jolene and Finn’s story without making me feel as though I missed something. Both of them showed some character growth, and their relationship, while quick, was not rushed. Stupid Hearts felt like a new side of Kristen’s writing, definitely more romantic comedy than angst-filled love story. I quickly found myself enchanted by the humor, dialogue, and colorful characters that brought this story to life. Stupid Hearts is a short and easy read that will make you laugh and give you those familiar tingles that come along with unexpected love. This story was completely charming and unquestionably entertaining. Kristen has a voice that is young, fun, and fresh bringing a vibrancy and fearlessness to her writing that makes her story so addicting.

The Hysterics

Synopsis

Once upon a time, I was Fallon Dunbar.

Rock and roll, drugs, and bad decisions were the life I lived.

I’d fallen so deep into the dark rabbit hole that I was certain I would never make it out alive. People like me didn’t get second chances. People like me didn’t get lifted from the darkness. So when the opportunity showed up, I had to take it.

I walked away from everything I loved, everything that was killing me, and I became Fae Dunham. After that, I hid behind makeup, long sleeves, and a closed-off heart.

All was well until I met Dane Pearson. He wasn’t convinced of the new me, and whenever he was near, I felt like the old me, the real me, filled with passion and a love for music. Every day was a struggle of self-discovery. Every day was a fight to not fall back down the rabbit hole. And every day, somehow, someway, I slowly began to discover what it meant to find myself.

It was a hysteric ride, but it was ours. And I wouldn’t change a thing.

Review

The storyline behind The Hysterics is such a fun concept. I absolutely adored the intriguing twist that Kristen Hope Mazzola put on the rocker love story. She won me over with both the badass rocker chick, Fallon and her conservative alter ego, Fae. I also effortlessly fell for Dane, the sexy musician who lives in the moment. Fallon is hiding in plain sight as Fae after the rock star lifestyle almost killed her. She’s trying to start over when she meets Dane. Dane wants the rocker life and is everything Fallon should probably avoid. However, the chemistry between them is undeniable and their whirlwind romance inevitably takes off amidst the growing success of Dane’s band, The Hysterics. The banter between these two was priceless, but what really got me was the emotional connection. Kristen really stirs up a lot of feelings with this story and these two seem to know exactly how to bring it out in each other. The Hysterics had just the right amount of angst to really make me feel, while still maintaining the overall sass and steam of the book.

“If you can’t love him completely, then don’t love him at all.”

Fallon underwent a lot of character growth during this story. Her two identities seem like such complete and total opposites. While being Fallon was killing her physically, being Fae was more of an emotional death. She craved the freedom to live and love music again and without it, she felt a noticeable void. Kristen carefully brought Fallon back to life as Dane helped her see that being herself didn’t have to mean being the self-destructive rocker chick that had been completely consumed by the underground. Fallon proved to be something Dane could anchor himself to while his life in music was quickly changing and in return he made Fallon fall in love with life again. Kristen Hope Mazzola can definitely create palpable connections. Fallon and Dane clicked from the start and their dynamic was potent. I could easily sense how deeply they were invested in one another. Not to mention the lust and man, was the spark between these two hot! I waited for those buttoned up moments of restraint exploding into reckless abandon. Kristen did not disappoint with this couple.

“If you can’t love the baggage and scars and messed up bullshit along with his kind heart, then don’t drag his heart through the mud.”

The secondary characters in this story were hilarious and enticing. I’m hoping they’ll be getting their own books next, because I already feel like I need to know them. Together, The Hysterics made for plenty of sarcasm, innuendo, and snarky commentary that colored this story and gave it a certain vibrancy. At the beginning of the book I had some trouble with the pacing of the story, moments seemed a bit disjointed and things were moving so fast that I wasn’t able to bond with the characters immediately. The second half of the book moved much more smoothly, and I felt like I really got to know Fallon and Dane. I enjoyed the parallel of Fallon leaving behind the music scene while Dane is just getting his foot in the door. At times it seemed like a recipe for failure, but it allowed Kristen to really develop her characters’ strengths and emotions around the challenges of their budding relationship. I loved the way Kristen wrapped this story up. I felt like the story and characters had been satisfyingly vindicated. I hope we see more of Fallon and The Hysterics in the near future.

PROLOGUE – FAÇADE

FALLON

I was Fallon Dunbar.

I was a drummer.

I was confident, strong, and driven.

I was a junkie.

I am dead.

The full boxes scattered around my small one room apartment made it feel more real. The sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach made it feel so wrong. The new title and job made it feel surreal.

I am Fae Dunham.

I am the assistant editor of Raging Underground.

I am unsure, nervous, and scared shitless.

I am in recovery.

Staring into the full length mirror I had just hung up on the back of the door in my new room, I saw the shell of what I used to be, the life I could no longer have. The only traces left of my old life were the lips piercing I refused to take out. They were my favorites and they were staying. People like me don’t get second chances, but for some reason, I was standing knee-deep in one.

There’s no turning back now.

I will live again.

Review

Falling back together picks up right where Crashing Back Down left us. Mags finds herself waking up in the hospital after Walker’s revelations send her into a full-blown panic attack. Her friends and family are by her side, but Walker is nowhere to be found. Cali is dealing with the dissolution of her marriage, while Buck gets used to life without his cheating ex. Mitch seems to be in the middle, struggling to hold everyone together and battling some secret feelings of his own.

“Our lives were completely spinning in directions we’d never thought possible with no emergency break or seatbelt in sight.”

Crashing Back Down had left me devastated. I was completely blindsided by Walker’s confession and the subsequent fight between him and Mags. I was so upset when I tried to turn the page only to realize that it was indeed the end of the book. I have to say, I was in no way disappointed by Falling Back Together. Mags and Walker face the fight of their lives as they both try to figure out how to move forward. This story was emotional and raw and complex. This book gave me the answers I needed and brought me back from the emotional destruction upheaval at the end of book one.

“Everything is a terrible mess of awkward, horrible unsaid feelings and uneasy glances.”

One of the reasons I thought this book was a great second book was it’s honest approach to the whole situation. Mags is stuck in a war between her head and her heart. Love is complicated and sometimes love is willing to forgive even when you’re head is begging you not to open yourself up to the possibility of being hurt again. It would have been easy to take this story down either road definitively, but Kristen took us on the difficult journey where love and hate wage a war inside Mags. Watching Mags struggle with her guilt for moving on, her love for Walker, and her fear of the darkness inside him was definitely difficult at times. This story pulled on my heartstrings and played with my emotions until I felt like I was experiencing the storm going on inside Mags head.

“It is a fine line that I am forced to walk between hating him for what he did and loving him for the man he has become.”

Throughout this story, Kristen continues to allow her characters to develop as more of their pasts are revealed. I felt like I really got to know the characters in this book because how they handled everything going on around them spoke volumes about their personalities. We get to see them bare their souls and show us exactly what they’re made of. I felt more connected to the characters in this book and it kept me invested in their story. I loved finding out more about Mitch, Cali and Buck. They were all important parts of this story and getting a deeper look into their characters left me anxious to read their stories as well. Falling Back Together was a wonderful follow-up to Crashing Back Down. It did a great job of pulling things together for the characters and the storyline.

Excerpt

I took fistfuls of his black, long-sleeved, cotton shirt, pulling him as close as I could get him. I wrapped my legs around his waist and began to kiss as passionately and roughly as I ever had. I was hungry to taste him again, to feel him again, to simply love him again.

Right then, everything melted away—the fact that we were in the middle of nowhere in a gas station, that I was supposed to hate his guts, that he had a Hyde side of him that was evil and tortured. In that moment, we were simply us—desperately and madly us.

Walker slowly shoved my jacket from my shoulders and tossed it on the metal chair next to us. Panting and gripping the hem of my shirt, he pulled away to look in my eyes. “Mags? Are you sure about this.”

I kissed him softly on the cheek. “Let’s just not think for little. Please.”

He nodded and pulled my hips hard into his, letting me feel how ready his body was for me. I pulled his shirt up over his head, revealing all the gorgeous artwork that covered his chest, shoulders, and arms. I traced my finger tips from the start of his wrist, following the flow of the inked lines until my fingers were stroking his rigid abs just over his belt buckle. Walker’s breathing was heavy as he watched me take in the manly beauty before me. Slowly, I started to kiss from his collarbone to his jaw, finally finding his soft, desperate lips.

Crashing Back Down_1

Review

Crashing Back Down is an emotional rollercoaster. From start to finish my heart was in a constant state of flux, continuously swinging from grief and heartache to joy and possibility. This book is the first in a series of two and ends on a cliffhanger. You have officially been warned. This story centers around Mags, a war widow in her twenties who is forced to start over after her husband Randy is killed. Time has passed and Mags begins trying to navigate through her grief and loss to find her way back to being a twenty-something living and enjoying her life. She has her in-laws and Randy’s best friend and fraternity brother, Walker, looking out for her. The joy she and Walker share when they spend time together is palpable. I found myself smiling at their friendship and their ability to be honest and enjoy things when they were together. Their relationship brings levity to this otherwise devastating situation, but eventually secrets are revealed and grief proves to run deeper than I could have imagined.

“Mags, I don’t know how many more times I will have to say this, but here it goes, you’re amazing, you deserve the best and I want nothing more than to be whatever you need me to be.”

Mags hasn’t properly grieved her husband’s death and everything in her life is a constant reminder of the love she once had and the future they had planned together. When she finally starts to confront these emotions she is blindsided by a new emotion: guilt. She has no idea how to handle feeling any sort of happiness when the man she loves is dead. Herein lies her struggle and the driving force for the emotional ride this book takes you on. It was easy to get swept up in her sadness and pain. I often found my heart aching for her and all that she was dealing with. Walker takes good care of Randy’s parents and Mags, appearing to be the unwavering support that she needs to heal. But Walker lost his best friend too and he carries his own measure of despair. He keeps his emotions as hidden as possible, which made me feel a completely different kind of pain for him than I did for Mags. I connected with his need to be strong for everyone else, his ability to put his own healing aside for the sake of others. I desperately wanted him to just let go, to let his pain show so that someone could take care of him too.

“Feel free to scream, whisper, and everything in between. I want to hear it all.”

Just as it seemed like the dust was beginning to settle, Mags world is once again completely turned on its head. I have to give it to Kristen Hope Mazzola I did NOT see it coming. I’m still a little bit in shock, I think. What an unpredictable twist, it left me reeling! I love/hate an insane turn of events near the end of a book. I admire an author who can still surprise me even after so much of the story has played out. This also happens to be the point where I found out that this was the first book in a series (GAHH!). I really enjoyed Crashing Back Down and its ability to emotionally connect me to the characters. It is a great story that will keep you invested and leave you anxiously waiting to see how the story of Mags and Walker continues.
