Review

Caisey Quinn delivers an explosive, action-packed second chance romance with Live Wire, the first novel in her Nashville’s Finest series. After meeting Chase and Vivien in the prequel novella Lit Fuse, I was addicted. I knew I needed more of this badass couple and Caisey Quinn definitely didn’t disappoint. Sizzling, heart pounding, and full of feels, Live Wire was everything I’d hoped it would be and so much more. From their intensely emotional reunion to the delightfully satisfying conclusion, this story kept me utterly enthralled. Chase and Vivien’s sparkling chemistry was more potent than ever, compounded by their time spent apart and further intensified by their inexplicable emotional connection. I absolutely adored the push and pull between this duo, easily caught up in their heady tension and suggestive banter. Caisey Quinn made sure the reader felt every raw and gripping emotion along Chase and Vivien’s journey and by the time their story came to a close, I was nowhere near ready to let this memorable couple go.

“He had two purposes in life. That much was clear now. Defusing explosives and loving her.”

I adored getting to know Vivien better in this novel. Caisey Quinn has a talent for writing strong, confident females that are easy to root for while also ensuring they posses a genuine vulnerability that keeps them relatable and Vivien was a prime example. She was my favorite kind of heroine – the perfect mix of intelligence, sass and kindness. Vivien’s ability to recognize her mistakes and willingness to beg forgiveness coupled with her refusal to give up on Chase and their once in a lifetime connection made it impossible not to love her and cheer her on. Caisey Quinn also did an excellent job at putting the pieces of this complex woman together, revealing her tragic past and allowing readers to make peace with the decisions she had made that tore her and Chase apart to begin with. I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing Vivien in an entirely new light. Her heartache was authentic and her determination fierce – a potent combination that gave me no choice but to invest in this heroine.

“I have been the furthest thing from fine. I’ve been trying to pretend to live when I’ve been dead inside since the day I thought I lost you.”

It came as no surprise that Chase continued to be utterly swoon-worthy. I was already so in love with his beautiful heart and willingness to risk everything for Vivien in Lit Fuse. I didn’t expect for my own heart to break so much for Chase in Live Wire, but Caisey Quinn portrayed his pain at losing Vivien and the betrayal of finding out he’d been lied to so boldly that I couldn’t help but have a visceral reaction to his story. Sure, there were times in this book where he was a total jerk and I just wanted to slap him, but I also understood how deeply he felt and how conflicted he must have been at the situation Vivien presented. While I definitely would have liked to learn more about Chase’s past, he had plenty of emotional turmoil to sort through in this story and how he handled all of it was definitely revealing of his character. Chase made me melt with his suggestive flirtations, moments of emotional vulnerability, and dizzying sweetness. This hero was definitely book boyfriend material and one I won’t forget any time soon.

“Their past was messy and complicated but she vowed then and there to keep their future free of unspoken words and hurt feelings. No more secrets and no more lies.”

One of the things I loved about Chase and Vivien’s story was their equal footing throughout the novel. Both members of law enforcement, they were a powerhouse of strength and intelligence that kept me absolutely riveted. I loved the teamwork this duo exhibited and how easily they fit together. Their shared protectiveness made for one heck of a captivating adventure as they tried to balance their careers and relationship in the wake of all the pulse pounding action. Caisey Quinn had me on the edge of my seat, anxious to find out how this thrilling storyline would play out and loving every minute of Chase and Vivien’s quest to break the case. Surrounded by a colorful cast of secondary characters, I found this fictional world easy to lose myself in and even easier to love. I am so ready for more of Luke, Annalise, Aiden and the rest of the gang. I just know we’re in for another wild ride with the rest of this series. Live Wire demonstrates incredible growth in Caisey Quinn’s writing. This author’s talent for story building, character development and forging emotional connections with the reader continuously blew me away. I devoured Chase and Vivien’s story, loving every moment of this addictive, thrilling and dangerously romantic novel.

Synopsis

When Chase Fisk enrolled in the United States Army, it was mostly to escape a dead- end job working with his  alcoholic father. The military provided him with a sense of  belonging, and his brothers in arms became the family he never thought he’d have. He’s ready to embrace his promotion to Commanding Officer over a group of new explosive tech recruits—but he isn’t ready for her.

Vivian Brooks grew up in a military family and is unlike any woman Chase has ever met. The recently enlisted recruit is beautiful, tenacious, and as steady with her hands as any EOD technician he’s ever seen. She tempts him in every way possible, challenging him at all turns and taunting him with a body that haunts his waking moments and most of his sleeping ones. But as their forbidden romance could threaten their careers if it’s discovered, Vivian’s buried secrets threaten to destroy them both.

Review

Caisey Quinn has me totally hooked on Chase and Vivien! From the first page to the last, Lit Fuse is a sweet, sexy, action-packed ride that teases at an even greater adventure ahead. This novella packed a powerful punch, introducing readers to Chase, Vivien and a handful of other fantastic characters who will comprise the Nashville’s Finest Series. Each one had a unique, lovable and totally intriguing personality that left me wanting so much more. Although I’m not generally a fan of third person narration, Caisey Quinn effortlessly captures the hearts of our two main characters and delivers this story in a way that perfectly reflected their individual voices. She served up all of the emotion and personal connection to Chase and Vivien I could have hoped for and then some, easily ensuring my total investment in their happily ever after.

“He was like the ocean, Vivien decided. So much constantly happening beneath the surface even when everything appeared calm. Coming and going, pushing and pulling. Waging internal wars with himself, with his emotions.”

From the moment they met, Chase and Vivien were utterly electric. They had an undeniable attraction that hinted at the possibility of something deeper and decidedly epic evolving between them. Caisey Quinn did a phenomenal job at planting the seed of their inevitably significant connection and letting it grow just enough to grab hold of the readers and ensure they’d be back for the full-length novel. I loved how carefully bits and pieces of both Chase and Vivien’s pasts were revealed over the course of the story, allowing readers to appreciate the depth of both characters while also leaving room for further exploration. While I knew enough to become wholly enthralled by these memorable characters, there was obviously more to discover that will keep me coming back. I can’t wait to see where Caisey Quinn plans on taking these characters and how they’ll continue to grow, both as individuals and together, as their journey progresses.

He wanted her, he’d proved that with his behavior when she’d shut him out. But the closer she came the more he seemed to pull away. He wanted her at a safe distance, she decided. Not too close but not out of reach.”

There honestly wasn’t anything I didn’t enjoy about Lit Fuse. From the fun, sassy way that this story began to the explosive and puzzling ending, I was absolutely riveted. This novella is a true testament to Caisey Quinn’s incredible talent. Not only has she crafted a unique storyline and filled it with one-of-a-kind characters, but she has also managed to perfectly balance the heat, humor and heart of this story and compact it without losing any of its spark. I adored every sassy comeback, intelligent thought and sizzling moment of tension that colored the pages of Lit Fuse and I can only imagine how addictive Chase and Vivien’s full-length book will be. This story was paced to devour and I did just that. Overflowing with flirtatious banter, sexy interludes and emotionally raw moments, Lit Fuse is the total romance package topped off with heart pounding suspense and gut-wrenching surprises that will leave you reaching for the rest of the Nashville’s Finest series.

Give Me You

Synopsis

Corin Connelly left her past far behind her in New York City. Along with her mother and an ex-boyfriend who had no plans to let her go. Starting over in college in California seemed like a vacation in paradise compared to her old life, and if anyone needs a fresh start, it’s her. But her new roommate has a life-threatening secret, and soon paradise becomes even more intense than New York. When she loses a bet to the university soccer team’s star goalie, Skylar Martin, he claims a prize she didn’t ever plan to give him.

A weekend in her hometown.

Skylar Martin is used to getting what he wants. Growing up in a world of privilege has made his life easy, which is exactly how he likes his women. But when a feisty redhead tells him no, he becomes determined to figure out what makes her tick. And what she’s hiding.

Spending a weekend together will change everything they think they know about each other. The closer they become, the harder it is to hide the mistakes they thought they’d left behind–mistakes that will stand in the way of what they both want.

Corin and Skylar will have to stop hiding from the darkness in their pasts if they want a bright future together. But how can you love someone if you can’t forgive them?

Review

The moment I met Skylar and Corin in Keep Me Still, I felt like I needed to know these characters. When I imagined their story, it was always fun, sassy, and surprisingly complicated, and while Give Me You was certainly all of those things, it was also incredibly raw and gritty. Caisey Quinn delivers a love story that is colored by past tragedy and clouded in misunderstanding, a heady combination that somehow fails to dim the light of Corin and Skylar’s blinding connection. From the moment they met, an obvious electricity pulsed between these two and Caisey Quinn expertly tends to the sparks, encouraging them to ignite into something powerful and all-consuming. Not only did I find myself addicted to Corin and Skylar’s undeniable chemistry, but I was drawn to the similar fight that seemed to grow within them (despite initially seeming to be complete opposites). Caisey Quinn effortlessly ensnared me with this fantastic couple and kept me invested in their happily ever after long after I turned the final page.

“Skylar, that was so much better than okay I don’t even know if I have words. It was hot fudge sundae in bed on a Saturday morning during a marathon of Gilmore Girls good. Which, in my book, is pretty fucking amazing.”

Skylar was not at all what I expected. As Caisey Quinn unraveled this character over the course of Give Me You, I found myself falling hard for Skylar. While he was every bit the cocky, college playboy on the outside, beneath the innuendos and bravado was someone sweet, vulnerable, and incredibly kind. His relationship with Corin revealed a patience and respect I couldn’t have anticipated, and as we got to know more about Skylar’s upbringing, I began to understand not only his propensity for the casual hook-up, but his reverence for Corin and all that a real relationship with her promised. To say Skylar had me swooning would be an understatement. Corin, on the other hand, was like an emotional hurricane to my heart. While I assumed she had been through the wringer a time or two, the extent of her hurt and pain left me reeling. Caisey Quinn did an amazing job at deconstructing the girl behind the sass and snark, breaking down this sarcastic and feisty woman until readers could see her – really see her – for the insecure, vulnerable, broken, and jaded soul she actually was.

“I know I haven’t exactly been a gentleman at all times and I have fucked up royally more times that I can to count. But I hope you know that while we may not have the fairytale romance that Landen and Layla do, we do have something, Corin. Something that matters to me. A lot.”

Caisey Quinn broke and repaired my heart a time or two (or twelve) in Give Me You. Each time, making me feel this story in a significant and irrevocable way. Caisey’s writing is emotional, strong, and utterly enchanting, leaving me incapable of putting this book down until the last page had been read. There were a few moments where I felt like the pacing was off, too much was happening at once without enough time for the reader to absorb the emotional impact of events, but I was too hooked on the couple by then to give it much weight. For a large portion of the novel, Give Me You takes place concurrently with Keep Me Still and I absolutely loved finally being able to see what was happening behind the scenes of Layla and Landen’s story (and more Layla and Landen was definitely icing on the cake). If you haven’t read Keep Me Still, don’t worry. Give Me You is a standalone reading experience, but it will leave you wanting to meet Layla and Landen, too. Admittedly, the story development is not as fluid as some readers may prefer, but the more I learned about Corin and Skylar, the more the broken and hesitant nature of their timeline made total sense for these characters. All in all, Give Me You is another heartfelt, unforgettable, and unapologetically real love story from Caisey Quinn.

Synopsis

Fighting for redemption…

I’ve lived most of my life in darkness, beneath the shadows of secrets and addictions. The last thing I ever wanted to do was hurt the only girl I’d ever loved—the one who brought me into the light. In my entire life I’d made one promise—a promise I’d intended to keep. I’ve broken that promise and now I have to live with the fallout. Dixie Lark hates me, and I have to tell her that I love her. I also have to tell her a truth that might destroy us forever.

Can she love me even if she can’t forgive me?

Learning to move on…

Gavin Garrison broke his promise to my brother and he broke my heart in the process. I may never love anyone the way I’ve loved him, but at least I won’t spend my life wondering what if. We had our one night and he walked away. I’m finally beginning to move on when my brother’s wedding and a battle of the bands brings us back together.

Our band is getting a second chance, but I don’t know if I can give him one. How do you hand your heart back to the person who set it on fire once already?

Review

Caisey Quinn has unquestionably hit her mark with Missing Dixie. This book is the emotion-filled ending this series certainly deserves and then some. Somewhere along the way, Gavin and Dixie stole a bigger piece of my heart than I realized. Their personal stories and the obstacles they overcame in order to be together moved me in a profoundly beautiful way. Through all the heartache, angst, pain, and uncertainty, this couple continued to fight for each other, exemplifying the true meaning of love and family. Missing Dixie explored the complicated past these characters shared, giving the reader a much better understanding of their experienced emotional turmoil and a better appreciation for the deep connections among her characters. This story flowed effortlessly, never hitting a lull or feeling too rushed. Caisey’s skilled writing had me mesmerized, ensuring that I fell in love with Gavin, Dixie, Dallas, and Robyn all over again and guaranteeing I wouldn’t stop reading until I knew how Dixie and Gavin’s journey concluded

“Hot and cold. On and off. Yes and no. Soaring hopes and dashed dreams. My heart does not belong on a yo-yo string and I won’t allow it to be treated like one, no matter how much I love him.”

Caisey Quinn seriously blew me away with the strength she showcased in Dixie. While I can certainly see from the surface how Gavin’s treatment of Dixie and her inability to protect her heart from his neglect might have been frustrating for some readers, Caisey Quinn exposed a deeper truth in Missing Dixie that made Dixie’s unwavering belief in Gavin and complete acceptance of his flaws a powerful statement of strength. Caisey has taken a foundation of lifelong friendship and loyalty and crafted a love so all-consuming that nothing can shake it, effectively redefining the meaning of unconditional love. While Gavin’s secrets and lies rocked his relationship with Dixie, her belief in his redemption, in forgiveness, fate, and family, was absolute. If possible, I fell even harder for Gavin in this book. Caisey Quinn gave him a definitive voice in this story and it was one that couldn’t be ignored. Beneath the charm, talent, and dirty mind was a vulnerable, insecure, and scared little boy that didn’t know how to accept love. This character was carefully unraveled over the course of the book, exposing a man that made me feel for him in a very visceral way. He was raw and rough and incredibly real, making Gavin a character I won’t soon forget.

“Life is too short to spend it pining for someone who will never come around, wishing for something you will never have, and holding on to something or someone that doesn’t want to be held.”

Missing Dixie was intense to say the least. Gavin’s secrets, Dixie’s heartache, and Dallas’ new world as a husband and father-to-be certainly made for plenty of drama and an overwhelming storm of emotions. Caisey Quinn’s words brought her characters’ feelings to life, keeping me totally enthralled as I experienced their journey alongside them. There were so many special moments in this book that just touched my heart, as well as new characters and evolving relationships that added so much life to the story. Liam was like a ray of sunshine, that inimitable character who seemed so minor at first, but whose impact on the story was immeasurable. Dallas and Robyn made me grin as we watched them move forward in their happily ever after, waiting expectantly for the Leaving Amarillo family to grow a little bigger. While things with Gavin and Dixie were strained for most of the book, that palpable connection I fell in love with in the first book remained. Caisey Quinn made sure to keep their spark alive through well-timed tension, heated conversations, and sexy encounters that ensured the fire between this couple continued burning hot. Missing Dixie didn’t just deliver that familiar, delicious chemistry I had been missing between Dixie and Gavin, but it dove back into the music with Leaving Amarillo. Their practices, performances, and songs brought this story full circle and closed up this series with love and lyrics. Missing Dixie was the hard-fought happily ever after that I had been hoping for, delivering a beautiful and bittersweet end to this incredible series.

Excerpt

Prologue

“In the end, we are all just humans…drunk on the idea that love, and only love, can heal our brokenness.”

                                                                        -F. Scott Fitzgerald

Gavin

“I need a Michelob Light, two Jack and Cokes, a bourbon on the rocks, and a Sex on the Beach,” a waitress calls to me over the crowded bar.

“Yes, ma’am,” I shout over the din while filling the order quickly, tossing an umbrella into the fruity drink and briefly wondering what the hell kind of group orders such random drinks. It’s an odd number, so probably not a double date.

Once her tray is full, she takes off into the crowd and I take a few more orders from patrons sitting at the bar. The house band announcing that they’re taking a break and I’m grateful that the bar is full enough to keep it from being quiet.

Silence has always been my enemy. Hence why I play the drums, the loudest most deafening musical instrument in existence. They’re the only things that drown out the sounds in my head. Once my customers and waitresses have been taken care of, I do a quick wipe down of the bar and restock the highball glasses.

It’s in the brief moment when the pool balls knocking together and the raucous chatter die down that I hear it.

Someone is playing the piano, the old Wurlitzer that sits abandoned in the back corner of the Tavern. It’s not the music itself that stops me where I stand. It’s the way it’s being played. Effortless yet meticulous, a combination that I’ve only known one musician in my entire life to be capable of.

Glancing in the direction where the melody is drifting from I notice I’m not the only one mesmerized by the sound. Half the bar has made their way to the back corner to get a closer listen. My boss, a perpetually red-faced man named Cal, is going to kill me, but I have to see. I have to know if it’s her. My body propels itself around the bar just as a voice from my right calls my name, startling me out of my trance.

Turning, I look directly into a pair of gleaming green eyes beneath a perfectly even bob of blond hair.

Ashley Weisman stands across from me in her pencil skirt and oxford dress shirt with two too-many buttons undone to be here for professional reasons.

“You’ve been avoiding my phone calls,” she says evenly.

“Been busy.” Huffing out a breath, I place my hand gently on her elbow and attempt to steer her toward the exit.

Stilettos planted firmly on the liquor-sticky floor, she purses her full red lips at me and glares into my eyes. “You can’t ignore me forever. I’m your attorney. Besides, what’s the rush, Gavin? Not even going to offer me a drink? What kind of bartender are you?”

“One who doesn’t have time for this right now. I’ll call you tomorrow.”

I can’t explain it, but deep in my soul—if I have one that is—I know exactly who’s playing the piano behind me. I don’t know why she’s here, I don’t know if she knows I work here, and I sure as hell don’t know if she’ll want to see me. What I do know is that she and Ashley cannot cross paths right now. Not yet. Not before I’ve told her everything.

“I think I’ll take the drink now, thank you very much.” Twisting out of my reach, she hops up onto a barstool and steadily ignores the scowl on my face.

The music continues swirling around us and all I know is right now, I need to know who is playing that damn piano.

Clenching my fists, I walk around behind the bar and wait for her to tell me what she wants.

“I’ll have a screaming orgasm, please.” Her eyes gleam and I meet her interested gaze with a dispassionate one. “Multiples, actually.”

I barely suppress a loud sigh and grab the Bailey’s and a top shelf bottle of vodka. Once her drink is mixed I set it down in front of her.

“On the house. Feel free to take it and go.”

A frown mars her attractive face. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen you in such a hurry to get rid of me. You have a hot date later?”

I can’t help it, I glance over toward the piano. The music speeds up and so does my heart rate. The notes call to me like a siren song and I know I won’t be able to keep myself from barreling over there for much longer.

“The piano player? I saw her when I came in. She’s pretty.”

“You done?” I nod to a newbie bar back named Jake to come get her empty glass and he does.

“Oh, I see,” she says evenly, watching me carefully. “It’s her, isn’t it? The one you’re so eager to get your shit together for, huh?”

“I need to get my shit together regardless, Ashley. You know that. How about helping me do that instead of causing more trouble?”

She frowns as if I’ve insulted her. “I’m not trying to cause trouble. I’m curious. Pretty sure curiosity isn’t a crime.”

Closing my eyes, I inhale through my nose and exhale out my mouth like the meetings have taught me. “You know what they say about curiosity.”

Cal walks by and I call out that I’m taking my break. Without waiting for his response or approval, I move out from behind the bar and make my way through the sea of bodies separating me from the girl behind the piano. Once I’ve navigated the treacherous waters, I see her.

It’s smoky in here tonight and several women I’m not familiar with are surrounding her but I see her sitting there—playing her heart out—and all I can do is watch.

She doesn’t make music, or create it. She is music. It flows through her as she plays and it’s an incredible sight to behold.

There she is. My beautiful bluebird.

My stomach tenses and my throat constricts.

She shouldn’t be here.

I shouldn’t be here.

Seeing me here will hurt her and there is nothing I wouldn’t give to prevent that.

Before I can even begin to formulate the words in my mind that I should say to make this okay, to make it somehow hurt her less, the music stops and she turns as if she can feel me standing there. Applause breaks out around us but it fades into background noise.

There isn’t a name for the emotion that crosses her face, darkening her eyes and causing the fire in them to flare at me. It’s part shock, part betrayal, and complete pain.

My jaw clenches and I force my eyes to remain on hers even though they’d prefer to close and block out the sight of her wounds deepening.

“Taking requests?” Ashley’s voice calls out from beside me. Her expression says she’s genuinely impressed by Dixie’s talent but I can guess what my temperamental Bluebird will see.

Dixie Leigh Lark arches an eyebrow at her and then shoots me a scowl of pure disgust before answering with a short, “not at the moment.”

“Too bad,” Ashley answers with a shrug.

I step closer to Dixie just as she shoves the piano bench backward, scarping it across the hardwood floor. Before I can blink, we’re face to face and if looks could kill, someone would be performing CPR on me in a matter of seconds.

“Dixie, I—”

“Go to hell, Gavin,” is all that escapes her beautiful mouth. Her rage hits me with the force of a ten-foot plate glass window shattering over me.

I turn to watch her storm out, running a hand over my head and feeling the heat of several angry glares from other women around me.

Ashley smirks from behind her glass as she polishes off another drink I didn’t realize she was holding. “Well that escalated quickly.”

Yeah. It did.

I am so fucked.

Review

Caisey Quinn knows how to write a leading man. She seems to have an unmatched grasp on those country musicians who have heartbreak written all over them. I enjoyed getting to know Dallas as a musician, big brother, and best friend in Leaving Amarillo, but discovering what kind of man Dallas Lark really is in Loving Dallas was deeply satisfying. Dallas proved to be every bit the caring, kind-hearted, protective, and talented man he seemed to be, impressing me with his adorable personality and understated allure. Dallas is definitely a one-click worthy book boyfriend, charming me with his impeccable manners and delicious dirty talk. His second chance at love with Robyn was an emotional rollercoaster that had me soaring and stumbling right alongside this fantastic couple until I couldn’t help but find myself totally invested in Robyn and Dallas’ happily ever after.

“I don’t even know which thing he’s apologizing for – the past or the present – because I’m melting. The rain, his fiery hot mouth, his hands scorching a trail over my body. I’m drowning in Dallas and I can’t stop. Worse, I don’t even want to.”

I absolutely adored Robyn. She is everything a strong, independent woman should be and then some. Her intelligence, success, and quick wit drew me to her while her evident heartache allowed me to easily connect to the character. Dallas was the sweet southern boy with a not-so-sweet side that made the strained relationship he shared with Robyn spark with desire. Robyn and Dallas had a fire burning between them that was absolutely smoldering, a product of rediscovered lust and uncovered feelings. Their shared history and stubbornness guaranteed a story overflowing with snarky comments, devilish innuendos, and unwavering tension that had me grinning as much as it had me swooning. Caisey Quinn could have not have designed a better match for Dallas than Robyn.

“This is it. Dallas is on one side of the chasm that’s been growing between us for years and I’m on the other. When he reaches me, I know I have to make a choice. Now. Either I can play it safe and walk away, again, or I can jump down a gaping black hole with him.”

I loved the direction in which Caisey took this book. I’ve seen a lot of books about musicians on tour that play into the celebrity lifestyle, but Dallas’ story was different. He was just a regular guy trying to do what he loves for a living while navigating the doubt and insecurities that come with life on the road. His hesitancy to jump headfirst into the fame gave him an edge of authenticity that allowed me to really relate to him. Caisey Quinn had me in knots as I watched Dallas fight for his career, his family, and his heart. Loving Dallas also teased at the drama between Dixie and Gavin that is set in motion near the end of the first book. Small details regarding Dixie and Gavin’s uncertain relationship were shared throughout this story, paving the way for the third and final book. Caisey Quinn gave us just enough to leave me wanting more. I am so ready for the rest of Dixie and Gavin’s story. I can’t wait for more of Leaving Amarillo!

Synopsis

Some promises are made to be broken…

Music is my everything.

After my parents died when I was a kid, moving into my grandparents’ ramshackle house on a dirt road in Amarillo seemed like a nightmare. Until I stumbled upon my grandfather’s shed full of instruments. My soul lives between the strings of Oz, my secondhand fiddle, and it soars when I play.

In Houston, I’m a typical college student on my way to becoming a classically trained violinist headed straight for the orchestra pit. But on the road with my band, Leaving Amarillo, I’m free.

We have one shot to make it, and I have one shot to live the life I was meant to. Leaving Amarillo got into Austin Music Fest and everything is riding on this next week. This is our moment.

There’s only one problem. I have a secret…One that could destroy everyone I care about.

His name is Gavin Garrison and he’s our drummer. He’s also my brother’s best friend, the one who promised he’d never lay a hand on me. He’s the one person I can’t have, and yet he’s the only one I want.

One week.

One hotel room.

I don’t know if I can do this.

I just know that I have to.

Review

Leaving Amarillo is easily my favorite Caisey Quinn book to date. Her writing has never been so exquisite nor has it ever elicited as much emotion from me. Dixie, Dallas, and Gavin are an unstoppable trio that stole my heart instantly. Their voices were genuine and gritty and full of life. Their story brought on an endless wave of feelings that held me hostage until the very end. I loved the idea of seeing a band being built from the ground up. Experiencing their struggle to catch a break was inspiring and left me feeling hopeful. Leaving Amarillo perfectly exemplifies the new adult genre that I have grown to love so much. As her characters venture out in the world and learn how to stand on their own, Caisey Quinn demonstrates the importance of chasing your dreams, accepting love when it finds you, and holding onto to the family you’ve built for yourself.

“The bumps and the bruises, the memories of everything gone wrong, of playing through the hiccups – that’s part of what I love about it. Music is an experience. It’s alive. Untamable. You can try to plan it out, pin it down, and bend it to your will, but it can’t really be done.”

The complex, well developed and easy-to-love characters brought this story to life. Dixie’s voice was truly something special. Her history of loss, uncertain future, and uncontrollable feelings connected me with her. I could see echoes of myself in this character and that made sharing her journey that much more significant. The love that swirled between Dixie, Dallas, and Gavin was breathtaking in its unapologetic honesty and unconditional permanence. Caisey Quinn gave her characters unbreakable ties that hold everything together even when the storyline sees everything falling apart. Gavin and Dixie are truly on fire from the moment the book begins. The heat between them crackles in the air, threatening to incinerate their worlds completely if left unattended. The connection Caisey created between these two characters was absolutely stunning in all of its heartbreaking brilliance.

“You’ve wrecked me, Bluebird. I. Am. Wrecked.”

The storyline intertwines the personal and professional lives of our characters as they try to reconcile their dreams with their reality. While there were certainly many opportunities to turn back, Caisey Quinn held true to the message of this story. Never stop dreaming. Never stop chasing your dreams. And never let anyone diminish them. She brought light and hope to a sometimes dark story, filling me with a renewed sense of wonder at life’s possibilities. To say that I’m anxious for the second book in this series would be a severe understatement. These characters have somehow become a part of me and I’m desperate to continue on this journey with them. The road ahead of Dixie, Dallas, and Gavin promises to be just as bumpy and overcome by detours, but it also promises to be worth the pain. Caisey Quinn has certainly outdone herself with this stunning new adult masterpiece and I can’t wait for more of these inimitable characters.

The Evolution of Dixie and Dallas Lark

Dixie and Dallas Lark are the brother and sister duo who make up the band Leaving Amarillo along with their mutual best friend, Gavin Garrison. These characters have been some of the most interesting and three-dimensional that I’ve written in my career and I found it particularly interesting that they didn’t end up how I originally pictured them. Sneaky characters went and evolved a bit on me!

Original_Leaving Amarillo

My first Dixie and Dallas were quite tame and actually kind of blurry in my mind. He was a sexy, rugged guitar playing, protective big brother and she was a fiddle player caught between life in the orchestra pit and freedom on the open road. As their story progressed, though, I began to see them more clearly. They were that band you get lucky enough to catch playing a late night gig at The Stage or Crossroads in Nashville. That one that you decide to stay and have one more drink just so you can listen to them a little longer—the one you know you will see hitting it big in the very near future because you can’t bring yourself to leave until they finish their set!

Edgier_Leaving Amarillo

I initially pictured Dallas as a slightly more muscular Jensen Ackles type but that evolved a bit due to the ways in which Dixie evolved. She became edgier and grittier than I originally imagined due to her backstory and so Dallas had to toughen up a bit, too. This happens sometimes—I picture a character or story one way before writing and then that changes as I get deeper into it. It’s such an amazing experience—that moment when my characters become “real” and show me who they are versus who I’d originally imagined or expected.

Caisey Quinn’s Inspiration for the Neon Dreams series

Not too long ago (barely over a year), I took a trip to Nashville with some friends. It was one of those last minute “oh my gosh, we have to see this super big artist doing a concert in a tiny venue because they just Tweeted that they’ll be there” type road trips. Unplanned, beef jerky, big gulps, and random road mix cd style adventure. My favorite kind.

However, by the time we arrived at the venue it was packed. Literally. Wall to wall crammed, people spilling out onto the sidewalk, full to maximum capacity packed. Apparently we weren’t the only ones who caught word that a big name artist was going to be there.

Sigh.

We decided to just check out a few local spots instead. In a bar called Crossroads we got comfy, ordered drinks, and started chatting about how bummed we were that we didn’t get to see the original artist we intended to. I can’t even remember now who it was. Here’s why.

As we’re ordering a second—okay, maybe a third—round and deciding if we’re going to just call it a night and get a hotel room or head home (Birmingham is only about three hours away), this glorious sound fills the air. No, it pierces the air, rips through it and grabs everyone in hearing range by the eardrums.

Our conversation—along with many others—ceased instantly. Chill bumps ran up my arms even though it was quite warm and I was wearing a jacket.

Most of the patrons gaped in awe as this young woman played the fiddle as if she’d been born to do that and only that. It was the solo from “Devil Went Down to Georgia” by the Charlie Daniels band and she was rocking it beyond comprehension. Pretty sure even the bartenders stopped what they were doing. The rest of the night was a little blurry, but I know we didn’t leave until that band had played their entire set.

We ended up getting a hotel room but none of us slept. All we could talk about was that band and how amazing they were and how we were kicking ourselves that we didn’t get their name so we could check them out online and hear more. I still look for them when I’m in Nashville and one day I fully expect to hear them on the radio. Whoever they are, they will forever be the band that inspired the Neon Dreams series.

This isn’t the exact band but they’re pretty close! The search continues!

Because it’s just when you think you’re safe that you find yourself right in the path of destruction.

Review

Path of Destruction is the second book in the Broken Heartland series and should be read after book one. If you haven’t read the first book, you really should stop reading this, as it may possibly spoil the ending to the first book in the series. Storm Warning left us with a huge hole in our hearts as we wondered and worried over the fate of our favorite characters. When I opened up Path of Destruction, I was nervous. I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to any of the characters yet and I certainly wasn’t prepared for the onslaught of emotions that would find me from the very first page of this book. Elizabeth Lee and Caisey Quinn have once again written a breathtaking journey that is raw, powerful, and absolutely haunting.

“If she stayed still long enough, the pain would come. Raining down on her, pressing against her chest and holding her under. It was always there, silently carving out her insides until there was nothing left.”

Elizabeth and Caisey have expertly built the suspense at the beginning of the book, further fueling my anxiety as I waited to find out the aftermath of the first book’s final events. Once again, EL and CQ have joined their writing styles seamlessly into an incredibly well-written, expertly developed, and touching story. There were so many times when I felt like my heart had been ripped out and stomped on, only to find it being carefully replaced and repaired. There were moments that captured the innocence and naïveté of youth, making me smile, and instances of grief and pain that had my heart aching. Path of Destruction packs a powerful punch, completely consuming me until I was lost in the story.

“You might have been in love with that girl, the one I was this summer. But look at me. I’m not her anymore. And I never will be again. So please, please stop bringing her up. She’s gone. Stop looking for her.”

These two talented authors know how to develop a character, layering complex emotions and experiences until you can’t help but fall in love with and feel for each and every one of their characters. This story revealed a lot about the characters and their relationships, exposing the vulnerabilities and imperfections of each one in a way that made them undoubtedly genuine and beautiful in their flaws. EJ in particular went through a huge transformation in this book. Her experiences break her down and challenge her to hold onto who she is. Her personal journey is heart wrenching, raw, and honest. EL and CQ made sure there was no mistaking what she was going through, and they flawlessly gave those experiences over to the reader.

“I’m pretty sure I love you. I wish I could give you some specific clarification on that, because that’s a heavy damn statement if ever there was one. But all I know is that for most of my life I have loved you in one way or another.”

I am overwhelmed by the skill with which EL and CQ have crafted this story. It is not an easy task, sharing so many personal journeys at once while maintaining their overall place in the big picture. It would be easy to lose that connection between reader and character in the shuffle of such a layered storyline, but EL and CQ make it seem effortless. After the first book in the series, Path of Destruction was everything I hoped it would be and more. I am dying to find out how this story will unfold and come to a close in the third book. I’m already bracing myself for the rollercoaster that is sure to come in the next book.

Excerpt

Prologue – Cameron

I’d always heard that your entire life flashes before your eyes right before you die. Now, I can honestly say that it’s true. Well, almost true. It’s more like your mind flips through a mental photo album of all the things you’d done and the people you’d met—a birthday party, the first time you drove, someone’s face when you told them they’d never be as pretty as you, your mother’s reprimanding glare when you didn’t win the pageant title you were supposed to, you as a little girl waiting on the front steps for your father to come home—it’s all there. The good, the bad, the ugly. All of it.

You can try to focus on the good—like the face of the person you loved—but it’s no use. Whether you want to or not, you see it all. It must be God’s way of letting you see what he saw so you aren’t surprised when you end up on the other side in Hell. Which is exactly where I’d assumed I’d just booked a first class ticket too.

I was too weak to fight it—to argue that I was in fact a good person—once the storm decided that I was going to be one of its victims, there was nothing I could do but try to hold on to the face of the one person I was sure I’d never see again.

Served me right. I shouldn’t have waited to tell him how I felt. I should have told him the moment I felt it. The moment I realized that despite what I’d done in my past, I was a better person just for loving him.

As the darkness and quiet started to surround me, I knew that it was too late to beg for forgiveness now. Instead, I just closed my eyes and prayed for mercy.

Born and raised in the middle of a Midwestern cornfield (not literally, that would be weird), I’ve spent my entire life imagining stories. Stories where the right guy always gets the right girl, first kisses are as magical as they are on the big screen and anything is completely possible if you believe.

Although this journey began years ago, it recently took on a whole new life. After years of devouring hundreds of Romance, YA and New Adult novels, I had an epiphany… I should write a book. And I did it!

If I’m not reading, writing, enjoying drinks with my amazing group of girlfriends or chasing around a sarcastically funny kid, I’m probably watching television shows that were created for teenagers, while my husband teases that I’m too old to watch them.

Series: Broken Heartland #1

Storm Warning

Synopsis

Sometimes you can’t see the storm coming until it’s too late…

Severe Storm Warning Tip #1:
Be alert to changing weather conditions. Look for approaching storms.

Severe Storm Warning Tip #2:
If you see approaching storms or any of the danger signs, be prepared to take shelter immediately.

Severe Storm Warning Tip #3:
They may strike quickly, with little or no warning.

Situated just outside of Oklahoma City, Calumet County is divided into two drastically different communities: Hope’s Grove and Summit Bluffs. One is the small backward town where dirt roads lead the way to field parties and railroad tracks. And the other, a sprawling suburb where paved drives lead to the landscaped lawns of the wealthy and over privileged.

For five teenagers smack in the middle of Tornado Alley, summer is heating up fast. The winds of change are blurring the invisible line that divides the rich and the rural.

One has a secret.
One has a crush.
One has been lying.
One will get caught.
And one might not make it out alive.

They’re from two different worlds…but one summer is about to change everything.

Review

Storm Warning is an incredible collaboration between two incredibly talented authors that will leave you breathless. Elizabeth Lee and Caisey Quinn have written a fantastic story that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This was a one-sitting read for me because I just couldn’t walk away from this colorful group of characters and addicting storyline. A group of teenagers find themselves in the middle of a summer that will change everything. Emotions run high, drama is bubbling under the surface just waiting to boil over, and they all must learn to reconcile the unmatched excitement of new love with the devastating pain of heartbreak.

“This girl was his audible. The one who was about to change the play. Or maybe even the whole damn game.”

This story is told from five different points of view and to be honest, I was worried about keeping everything straight, but Eizabeth and Caisey have expertly crafted the many voices of this story. Cooper, EJ, Hayden, Cameron and Kyle all get a chance to share the story from their eyes. Each change in perspective flows seamlessly into the next, leaving no holes or room for confusion. Each voice is unique and by the time this story was over I found myself connected with each and every one of them in a different way. The characters all had their own attitudes and distinct personalities right down to the manner in which they process emotion. I absolutely adore this bunch and I’m anxious to hear the rest of their stories.

“Reminds me that I’m alive. That I won’t always be stuck in the same place, won’t be the same person forever.”

Storm Warning captures everything that is a young summer love between its pages. It is wracked with uncertainty, innocence, daring, and that thirst for life that only comes with being a teenager. Each relationship had its own storyline and set of challenges that played perfectly into the book as a whole. That cliffhanger!!! Elizabeth and Caisey are surely trying to kill me. They masterfully built the suspense until I didn’t think I could take any more, only to leave me without resolution. These ladies know how to ensnare their readers and the ending of this book is proof. I didn’t realize how completely invested in this story and attached to the characters I was until all hell broke loose. Book 2 cannot come soon enough!

Review

Caisey Quinn knows how to pack a punch. Even in the short span of a novella she delivers the entire spectrum of emotion. All I Need is a fun and flirty read that will leave you smiling. True to form, Caisey delivers Justin aka Jubb aka your delicious next BBF. She has certainly become an expert at creating those protective and sexy as hell men that know how to romance a girl. His view of his best friend Everly is nothing short of complete adoration. Their chemistry was tangible, crackling from the get go and turning into a full on blaze as the book progressed. I enjoyed the dynamic Caisey Quinn has created between these two, their relationship fueled by witty banter, familiar bickering, life-long friendship, and absolute unconditional love.

The story Caisey manages to tell in such a short novella is just as full of emotion and excitement as her longer works. All I Need is the complete package, delivering a little angst, a touch of drama, and a ton of longing in one tiny but powerful punch. I enjoyed watching Everly and Justin’s relationship shift as their story played out. Set against the backdrop of returning to a place that holds less than stellar memories, watching them confront their past and future simultaneously was touching and unexpectedly satisfying, giving this story significant weight and tangibility. Of course, I love a little music thrown in the mix, the fact that Justin and Everly are chasing their dreams as a band just makes this story all the more sweet. The epilogue left me feeling fulfilled, basking in the promise of their tomorrow.

Excerpt

Her full lips begged to be kissed. The pain she still carried around needed to be soothed. With my mouth. I wanted to kiss every inch of her, whisper in her ear that she was beautiful and amazing and that I needed her so badly it hurt. My tongue ached to lick that thin strip of skin I saw peeking out at me from under her shirt in the van. And a whole bunch of other places. Taste her, bite her, claim her.

“You okay, Jubb?” Her eyes were full of concern when she looked up at me from under her thick, dark lashes. The kind of concern no one had ever had for me. Just her. Always her.

I gave her a quick nod and smirked as if it were a silly question. It wasn’t. My need for her had built to a dangerous level, and Hale had thrown gasoline on my fire.

We reached her house and she took out her keys. I was good until we made it to her door and I caught a whiff of her sweet strawberry scent. She’d used that same shampoo forever, and it had been driving me crazy since we were kids. But we weren’t kids anymore. So I let go. Gave up my death grip on keeping my distance. Stepping into her space, I pressed her up against the door without actually touching her.

“Jubb, what the hell are y—”

“Feel that, Ev?” I said, grabbing her hand and sliding it under my shirt. Her slender fingers grazed my stomach. I pressed her hand against me more firmly. Made her trace the hard ridges of my abdomen.

“Yeah,” she breathed out, gaping up at me with eyes glinting with heat and panic. “I feel it.”

“No more Jubb,” I told her. “No more Jubb, or Jubby, or any other childhood nickname you might have had for me. Call me Justin or Cohen. Take your pick. Got it?”

My face was so close to hers I could hear the sound of her licking her sweet lips. And swallowing. Hard.

“Um, okay. W-why not?”

This was it. Go big or go home. Shit, I was already home. Everly was my home.

“Because,” I began, releasing her hand to brace both arms on either side of her head, “Jubby won’t sound as hot when you’re screaming it out later. And if I have anything to say about it, you will damn sure be moaning my name in the very near future.”

REVIEW – Girl With Guitar by Caisey Quinn

Girl With Guitar Banner

Title: Girl With Guitar
Author: Caisey Quinn
Series: Kylie Ryans #1
Release Date: May 20, 2013

Girl With Guitar

Synopsis

After Kylie’s dad dies in a freak accident, he leaves her with nothing other than her crazy step-mother, Darla, and the ability to play guitar. When Darla kicks Kylie out and she loses her job all in the same day, she hops a bus to Nashville determined to make her late father’s dreams come true. Waitressing and saving her pennies to record a demo, her big break comes when she’s asked to join a tour going down the tubes with once platinum album-selling country music superstar Trace Corbin. But touring with Trace is hardly a dream come true since he’s pretty much drinking his career down the drain. If Kylie can’t pull Trace out of his rut, he’ll pull her and her dreams down with him.

Review

Girl With Guitar is a story about growing up, chasing your dreams, and finding out that things aren’t always how you imagined they’d be. As always, CQ begins a beautiful story with a cast of incredible characters and introduces us to a life most of us can only dream about. Kylie Ryans is ready to be a huge country music star, but getting there won’t be easy. This story depicts the many sides of fame and the choices that have to be made along the way to hold onto who you are and still touch your dreams.

“Never be afraid to follow your dreams. And your heart.”

Kylie is one of my favorite female characters. She isn’t perfect. She knows loss and heartache but she still dreams big. She isn’t the least bit entitled. She is hardworking and knows the road to fame may require her to struggle, hit the pavement day-after-day, and clean up after other musicians. Kylie is feisty and funny and doesn’t take crap from anyone, not even Trace Corbin. Trace Corbin has everything Kylie wants and he is throwing it all away for his preferred state of drunken oblivion. I’ll admit I hated Trace at first. He was such a rude and infuriating mess. However, by the end of the book I saw him as the broken and desolate man he really was and all I wanted was to find a way to fix him.

“I’m on the tour from hell and everyone else has been smart enough to get off.”

Obviously, two such opposite personalities are going to create a lot of friction. The friction they generated was incendiary and herein lays the strength of this story. Watching the relationship between Kylie and Trace develop and change as they battled their demons, insecurities and the inimitable pull they feel towards one another was breathtaking. CQ has mastered Kylie and Trace’s dynamic and portrays it flawlessly in every interaction, conversation and gesture they share.

“Thanks for the ride boys – it was life changing as promised.”

Needless to say, Girl With Guitar was an extremely moving journey. These two opposites struggle to find a balance in their lives so they can co-exist peacefully on tour. The connection between Kylie and Trace was born, nurtured, severed, tested, stretched, and altered over the course of this book and it made for many poignant moments. I enjoyed every high, every laugh and every hopeful moment right along with every disappointment, every heart wrenching moment of honesty, and every tear shed. CQ has me caught; hook, line, and sinker straight into my heart with this one. As soon as you reach the end you’ll be jumping to read the next book and follow more of Kylie’s flight for recognition.
