Title: Until It Fades
Author: K.A. Tucker
Release Date: June 27, 2017
Twenty-four-year-old truck stop waitress and single mother Catherine Wright has simple goals: to give her five-year-old daughter a happy life and to never again be the talk of the town in Balsam, Pennsylvania (population three thousand outside of tourist season).
And then one foggy night, on a lonely road back from another failed date, Catherine saves a man’s life. It isn’t until after the police have arrived that Catherine realizes exactly who it is she has rescued: Brett Madden, hockey icon and media darling.
Catherine has already had her fifteen minutes of fame and the last thing she wants is to have her past dragged back into the spotlight, only this time on a national stage. So she hides her identity. It works. For a time.
But when she finds the man she saved standing on her doorstep, desperate to thank her, all that changes. There’s an immediate connection, and it’s more electric than the bond of two people who endured a traumatic event. It’s something neither of them expected. Something that Catherine isn’t sure she can handle; something she is afraid to trust.
Because how long can an extraordinary man like Brett be interested in an ordinary woman like Catherine…before the spark fades?
When K.A. Tucker has a new release, you can bet that I’ll be racing to the retailers to snatch it up. From the first moment I spotted the cover of Until It Fades, and then got a taste of it through the blurb, I knew that this novel would be no exception to my rule. It’s a standalone that delivered on so many different levels that I found myself unable to put it down. I devoured the story and the characters, got lost in the breathtaking writing, and wanted nothing but more.
“I guess it’s kind of like Cinderella. Though Cinderella got herself beautiful glass slippers on her night of magic. Mine involved shabby black heels, which were left for dead in a ditch.”
I can’t imagine a reader who would not fall in love with the pairing of Catherine and Brett. While they could not be more different, the saying ‘opposites attract’ proved to be true in this emotionally-charged book. Catherine was a single mother who epitomized the very definition of independent. She embodied so much of what I strive to be daily, even in her flaws. Something about her down to earth, forgiving nature breathed life into her character and resulted in me falling in love with her. When readers were introduced to Brett, it certainly wasn’t in the best of situations. Admittedly, I was a little bit nervous that he would end up being your stereotypical bad boy, but was pleasantly surprised as to where Tucker took his personality. Time and time again, he proved to be the man I wanted him to be and I may or may not have squealed on more than one occasion. Their romance was such a slow build of perfection, resulting in my falling for the characters right along with them. I could not have asked for a better book on the low-drama, low-angst, but highly-emotional list.
“I can be smart and still live, still allow myself to trust. And chase after what I want. I can let myself love again.”
Until It Fades delivers a truly heartwarming story of learning to trust after being burned, and finding love in the most unexpected places. Tucker’s writing in this book is some of the best that I have encountered from her and I expect others to feel the same. I promise that Catherine and Brett’s fairy tale will leave readers swooning, grinning, and begging for more – just like I experienced. It’s quite different from her other books, yet very distinguishable as Tucker’s style. I have a feeling that I’ll be returning to Until It Fades in the future whenever I need a feel good, light romance to make me smile and swoon…and I’m sure others will be joining me as well!
