Title: The Player
Author: K. Bromberg
Series: The Player Duet #1
Release Date: April 17, 2017
Easton Wylder is baseball royalty. The game is his life. His passion. His everything.
So, when an injury threatens to end Easton’s season early, the team calls in renowned physical therapist, Doc Dalton, to oversee his recovery. Except it’s not Doc who greets Easton for his first session, but rather, his daughter, Scout. She may be feisty, athletic, defiant, and gorgeous, but Easton is left questioning whether she has what it takes to help him.
Scout Dalton’s out to prove a female can handle the pressure of running the physical therapy regimen of an MLB club. And that proof comes in the form of getting phenom Easton Wylder back on the field. But getting him healthy means being hands-on.
And with a man as irresistible as Easton, being hands-on can only lead to one thing, trouble. Because the more she touches him, the more she wants him, and she can’t want him. Not when it’s her job to maintain the club’s best interest, in regards to whether he’s ready to play.
But when sparks fly and fine lines are crossed, can they withstand the heat, or is one of them bound to get burned?
K. Bromberg delivers a sports romance masterpiece with The Player. I fell head over heels for Easton and Scout, the delicious slow build of their relationship and the steady unraveling of their personalities and pasts. I was immediately captivated by the palpable sexual tension and utterly electric chemistry that sizzled between the hero and heroine – feeling every bit of their fragile restraint as I lost myself to their story. K. Bromberg brilliantly brought the professional sports atmosphere to life with the vibrant cast of secondary characters and inarguably evocative imagery. I swear I was experiencing the sights and sounds of major league baseball first hand as the author wrapped me up in the excitement of scorching summer nights spent beneath the glare of stadium lights. K. Bromberg’s lyrical prose and inherent understanding of human emotion made Easton and Scout’s journey an unforgettable reading experience and has me desperate for the next chapter in this inimitable couple’s story.
“Who knew the man who’s got a wicked arm and swagger for days also has such a huge heart?”
Easton was absolutely swoon-worthy, the kind of book boyfriend that melts your heart with his swagger and charm only to completely steal it with his surprising sweetness and thoughtful nature. I loved getting to know this character and exploring the subtle complexities of his relationship with his father, his role on the team and his history with the game. As Easton opened up to Scout and revealed his thoughts and fears to her, I found myself audibly sighing. He was unsure and vulnerable in a way that felt genuine and easy to relate to. The way he cared for her and fiercely defended his growing feelings was incredibly sexy, leaving me a puddle of adoring mush and moving Easton up my list of all-time favorite book boyfriends. Easton’s easy camaraderie with his teammates and his fierce dedication to baseball were just icing on the cake. These displays of love and loyalty left me anxious for more of this delectable hero.
“So, you can have your romance novels while I have my King and Follett and Patterson because I don’t want to read about having that kind of love someday. I’d rather be over here trying to take a chance at it in real life.”
K. Bromberg definitely knows how to write unforgettable heroines. Scout was feisty, intelligent, and completely devoted to the people and career she loved. She was the perfect match for Easton, pushing him and refusing to give in to his cocky smile and confident demeanor. In return he challenged her to open her heart, let down her walls and live her life on her own terms. The growth we got to see from this character was absolutely beautiful and I found myself cheering Scout on and investing myself wholly in her happily ever after. I enjoyed exploring the dichotomy of this character, Scout’s ease around the team and confidence in her work a direct contradiction to the insecure girl who struggled tirelessly to make her father proud and protect her heart at all costs. I’m excited to see where K. Bromberg plans on taking this character as this story continues. This lovable heroine definitely has me rooting for her.
“The measure of a man is often unquantifiable, and yet, with Easton, it’s everywhere.”
In addition to being exquisitely written, The Player was perfectly paced. An effortless balance of poignant conversation, sizzling encounters, adorable flirtations and intriguing baseball politics, this novel was one I just had to devour. I loved getting a glimpse at a new side of the sports world, experiencing Easton and Scout’s sweat, tears and emotional vulnerability as I read. K. Bromberg’s insight into this couple’s hearts and minds as they traversed Easton’s injury and rehabilitation made for an emotionally honest and decidedly memorable sports romance. Ending on a cliffhanger that left me swearing up and down the final page, I’m desperate for more of this incredibly addictive couple. K. Bromberg has once again totally hooked me and I can’t wait to see what she has up her sleeve next for these two. The Player was sexy, fun and incredibly sweet – another must read novel from this talented author!
Take my love of all things K. Bromberg and combine it with baseball, and naturally you get a grand freaking slam from this reader! The Player was filled with sexual tension, witty banter, and characters who could stand their own against whatever life threw at them. I found it to be sweet and tender, yet gritty and emotional at times. Easton and Scout’s romance ended up being the perfect way to bounce into spring!
“I’m putting myself on a limb for a woman who wants to run, when for the life of me, I’ve never been one to stay. But I’m not going anywhere.”
There was something about Scout that instantly drew me to her personality. She was a woman in a man’s world, but she owned it. Though she had moments of vulnerability, especially when it came to her father, the way she fought back against expectations and jibbing from the players made it impossible not to love her. That fierceness and tenacity was so admirable and provided to be such a breath of fresh air from the personalities I come across in the book world. Scout truly embodied the woman I strive to be on a daily basis so she certainly left her mark. Her counterpart, Easton, also proved to be quite the special man. He had an intuition about him where he could sense things with Scout; he knew the moments to push and the moments to let it go. Even in such a short time, their romance was personal and intimate in more than just a physical sense. I loved the focus on his career and the duty he had to his father, yet it touched me that he remained so grounded. Both of these characters suffered from living in the shadows and it was that sympathy and empathy for each other that really made these characters the perfect counterparts.
“His expression is part awe, part disbelief, and a whole lot of little boy mixed together, and it steals my heart when I had it firmly protected under lock and key.”
Time and time again, Bromberg has proven that she can take the broken and make them feel worthy of love. She has written books that were sexy and erotic, books that were sweet and funny, and now she has shown readers that she can blend it all together wonderfully. This first book of the duet proved to be addictive with its combination of witty banter and intense moments between Scout and Easton. I turned that last page with my jaw dropped and am already aching to see how their love will continue in the next book. However, if it’s even half as good as The Player, I expect Bromberg’s next book to be a grand slam out of the park!
