REVIEW – Turning Back by JA Huss

Title – Turning Back
Author – JA Huss
Publication Date – April 12, 2017
Series – The Turning Series #2

I lived in the dark for three years. My whole world revolved around the whims and happiness of three men. It was just a trip into the forbidden. A way out of a bad situation and forward into nothingness.

Quin, with his easy smile and charming good looks. He was always there for me… Until he wasn’t.

Smith, and his dispassionate attention. He was never there for me and he never regretted it.

Bric, the one who listened, but only to himself. Self-absorbed, self-obsessed, and self-serving. He was never the one I wanted.

And now he might be the only one I have left.

It was good while it lasted, I guess. But it could’ve been so much more. It could’ve been so much better.

And that’s why I’m turning back.

It has been quite a while since I’ve stumbled across a book that I simply could not put down. JA Huss has created such a tantalizing and taboo world that I felt so completely drawn in, immersed in the lust and romance of these characters. Turning Back ended up being the perfect balance of steam and heat mixed with growth and maturity. This second installment will satisfy so many of readers’ desires while simultaneously making them crave more and more.

“I’m gonna lose, I realize. I’m gonna lose this game. Because I desperately want to trust these men and I know it’s a bad idea. I want them to heal me, but they have long claws and sharp teeth.”

With the way that Smith left the game at the end of book one, I was curious (and maybe a bit skeptical) as to how things would progress in Turning Back. I was a little nervous that these characters would lose their edge and those traits that originally fascinated me. However, I was so relieved to see that while Huss had to change some characteristics for their growth, nobody really lost the essence of what made them the personalities I fell in love with. Quin was still a lost boy, trying to figure out how he fit in to this life he created. Bric was still the take charge, strong-headed alpha who tended to walk a line with the darkness inside him. However, what possibly stole the show for me, was the introduction of Rochelle. The many different layers to her persona and the choices she made felt like I was digging deeper and deeper, never really knowing when I’d hit the center. However, once I did, something in me sparked to life and I could understand every single decision she had made. I loved Chella and didn’t know how I would possibly feel toward Rochelle, yet once I met her, it wasn’t about choosing a favorite. Turning Back redeemed some characters that I hadn’t grown to like yet, made me fall in love with those I got a deeper look at, and feel pity for those who were still lost by the end.

“How long should I punish her? How long do I refuse to let her in? How long do I have to torture myself in order to trust her again?”

It’s no secret that I would read a shopping list from JA Huss if she chose to publish one. There is something unique about her writing and her characters that I tend to resonate with. Every time I close a page on a novel from this author, I think that there’s no possible way she can top it in whatever she chooses to tackle next. Yet, time and time again I am shocked and in awe of the level of talent Huss exudes. Her romances are unconventional, her storylines are a vortex, and the overall read is an experience to be had every single time. If you haven’t picked up a book from this author yet, I really believe you are severely missing out. Turning Back had a little bit of something for everyone and certainly left this reader absolutely one hundred percent satisfied!
