I’ve sworn off men.
Famous last words, right? You’re expecting some epic tale of reluctant love and my dramatic change of heart? Well, you’re not going to get it.
I’m stubborn. And headstrong. And I’ve just survived the worst three years of my life. After escaping an abusive fiancé to live in hostels and cheap hotels while I worked my way across Europe, I’ve come to two conclusions.
The first? Now that I’m back home, I’m going to squander my expensive culinary degree on a food truck that caters to the late night drunk crowd.
The second? I’m going to prove to the bastard across the plaza that my street food is better than his fussy five course monstrosities.
Killian Quinn might be Food and Wine’s Chef to Watch Out For. He might have a Michelin Star. He might have every food critic in the city wrapped around his too-large fingers. But he’s also pretentious and unbearably arrogant and the very opposite of me.
So he can keep his unsolicited advice and his late night visits and his cocky smiles. I want none of it. Or him.
I want the opposite.
Every once in a while, I’m lucky enough to stumble upon a book that transports me to a whole new world with characters that make me grin and fall head over heels in love. Rachel Higginson’s The Opposite of You did just that and easily shot up to one of my favorite reads of the year. This first in a new series of standalones is a breath of fresh air in the romance genre. With personalities who may love to hate each other, readers will do nothing but love and adore them and their romance.
“I’d already dated the egomaniac. I’d already had a relationship with the famous executive chef. I’d already given up my dreams so someone else could pursue theirs. And I’d lost everything in the process. I didn’t want a guy like Killian Quinn. I wanted the exact opposite.”
From the moment I met Vera, there was something I was drawn to and couldn’t get enough of. There were morsels of a past she worked hard and fought to overcome, which I’ll admit is one of my soft spots in novels. However, she still had this vulnerable side to her that I could tell was broken in unfathomable ways. I needed to know what would happen to her and see how much of a transformation she could make. The novel is written entirely in her point of view so to say that I became incredibly invested in her would be an understatement. However, that is not to say that I didn’t sustain myself on every bit of crumb I could receive from Killian as well. He had one of those personalities that was honest and explosive, but commanded respect even through the words on a page. The reverence people had for him was completely understood and I think it’s what made me initially warm up to him. Him and Vera were so different, yet so similar, that I was able to see how good they would be for each other. They could easily fit together and complement the other and let me just tell you, Higginson excels at doing just that! The slow burn of their romance warmed all of my insides and left me beyond satisfied.
“This man that had gone from idol to enemy, to reluctant friend, to fantastic kisser. And not only had he kissed me beyond all reason and rational thought, but he’d given me back whole chunks of myself that had been missing.”
In a romance genre filled with so many occupations, it was so refreshing to see both a male and female chef striving to achieve their dreams. While that may have been my initial reason for wanting to read this novel, it was the insane chemistry and unforgettable characters that kept the pages turning. I read The Opposite of You in less than 24 hours and it was one of those situations where I couldn’t put it down, yet I never wanted it to end. The Opposite of You was my first book by Rachel Higginson but if it’s an indicator of what she’s capable of, I can guarantee that I’ll be diving into anything and everything she writes. If there were more than five stars, this author would certainly be receiving them from me for this incredible romance!
