Title – Thoughtful
Author – S.C. Stephens
Publication Date – February 24, 2015
Series – Thoughtless, #1.5
In Thoughtless, Kiera told her story. Now it’s time to hear from the sexy rock star who captivated us all . . .
The only place Kellan Kyle has ever felt at home is onstage. Gripping his guitar in a darkened bar, he can forget his painful past. These days his life revolves around three things: music, his bandmates, and hot hookups. Until one woman changes everything . . .
Kiera is the kind of girl Kellan has no business wanting-smart, sweet, and dating his best friend. Certain he could never be worthy of her love, he hides his growing attraction . . . until Kiera’s own tormented heart hints that his feelings might not be one-sided. Now, no matter the consequences, Kellan is sure of one thing-he won’t let Kiera go without a fight.
From the moment that I discovered S.C. Stephens would be delivering more from one of my favorite literary triangles, I was anxious with giddy delight. Kellan, Kiera, and Denny ripped my heart out in the original Thoughtless trilogy, yet left me yearning for nothing but more of the sweet pain. Thoughtful allowed readers to see behind Kellan’s every motive, revealing a vulnerable side to him that we didn’t previously receive. For fans of the series, it certainly added a special element to what we have come to expect from these characters.
“For a minute, I could pretend that I meant everything to her, because she was certainly starting to mean everything to me. And if you pretend something long enough, it eventually becomes real. Right?”
I really did enjoy reliving this romance, especially through a different character’s eyes. Kellan gave us a peek into his history and those insecurities really shone a light on an entirely new side of his personality. Furthermore, he allowed a different insight into some of the events that occurred, which ended up creating a deeper sense of connection to his character. That being said though, there were some things that completely misaligned with how I’d expect him to react. At times, it was almost as if the Kellan created in Thoughtful differed so much from the Kellan in Thoughtless that they seemed like two characters. Though this didn’t happen often, it did give me pause in several parts of the book. The relationship between him and Kiera was even more gut-wrenching through Kellan’s eyes, but those key moments in his head were priceless. I honestly felt the same about his feelings toward Denny; Kellan’s voice made readers see just how difficult the whole dynamic truly was.
“’Promise’ was such a misleading word. It suggested hope, but sometimes promise had no hope attached to it. At least, not for everyone. Sometimes, to give someone else hope, you had to cut out your own.”
While I did really like this addition to the series, I somehow felt like Thoughtful moved at a much slower pace than the original trilogy. Even though I knew what was happening and I was aware of how things would end up, I still expected it to flow a bit smoother than what I had received. Lucky for me, the butterflies exploding in my stomach were still very much present. S.C. Stephens has written characters that are all-consuming; they seep into your very being and make you itch for more. I loved being brought back into this world with such an emotionally impactful read. It wasn’t a straight regurgitation and for this fan of the series, I truly appreciated that. Though I have adored this triangle and everything they’ve been through, I finally feel okay saying goodbye after the addition of Thoughtful to the series. I’m beyond excited to see just what Stephens has up her sleeve next!
