Meet Private First Class David Cavello.
Love is war when shadows play games with the heart. In this thrilling romance from the USA Today bestselling author of Stone Walls and Glass Ceilings, a decorated veteran facing the darkest battlefield finds a guiding light to trust and tenderness.
David Cavello is no longer in uniform, but the memories of combat still haunt his every waking moment. Driven to protect and serve, he accepts an undercover job he has to keep hidden from everyone. But David’s mission goes against orders the second he makes contact with gorgeous and spirited Maygen Whitney. The intense attraction he feels for Maygen drives him crazy—almost as crazy as he feels about hiding information from her.
After growing up with an overprotective father, Maygen feels like she’s finally claiming her independence. Sure, she’s been lonely, but David seems to make all her dreams come deliciously true—until the sting of betrayal sends her world spiraling. Now Maygen’s caught in a tragic web of lies, leaving her more vulnerable than ever to an enemy hidden in the shadows. But when Maygen most needs a hero, David leaps into action—intent on doing whatever it takes to save the woman he loves.
Once again, A.M. Madden delivers heartbreak, hope and a whole lot of feels with Dark Corners, the newest addition to her True Heroes series. David’s story was every bit as deep and captivating as I’d hoped it would be and then some. From the moment David and Maygen met, I was mesmerized by their story. Their instant chemistry bordered on combustible and everything about them made me grin. I loved the easy friendship they formed, opening up to one another in the most unexpected ways. They also shared plenty of adorably sweet moments, delightful banter, heart-wrenching emotional honesty, and seriously sizzling sexual tension. Both fighting to be free in their own ways, A.M. Madden wrote this couple to be truly one-of-a-kind. Their shared stubbornness and need to shield one another from potential heartache only served as fuel to the fire, igniting the pages of this book and making it impossible to put down. Everything about Maygen and David felt effortless, even when their relationship was anything but, and I found myself wholly invested in this phenomenal couple and their hard-fought happily ever after.
“Two things were clear—we really liked each other, and our connection was scary. It was a list of unknowns that stretched between us for miles.”
After having briefly met David in Nick and Angela’s story, I was intrigued to say the least. The fiercely protective, retired soldier was obviously haunted and I wanted nothing more than to unravel him. A.M. Madden certainly did not disappoint, exposing David as a brave, broken warrior who was quick to steal my heart. As we got to know him through his developing relationship with Maygen, David revealed a softer, sweeter, more flirtatious side that made my heart flutter. When he opened up to Maygen about his experiences in Iraq and the trauma he still suffered from, something inside of me reached out to him. This character became someone tangible, relatable, and inexplicably lovable. I felt for David in ways I didn’t know I was capable of feeling for a fictional character. The war he waged with himself on a daily basis was a genuine and grueling representation of what PTSD looks like for so many very real people. A.M. Madden broke the mold with this hero, instantly grabbing hold of my heart with David’s adorable, cocky, and surprisingly sweet demeanor, only to leave me helplessly lost to the beautiful, brooding enigma whose strength and struggles left me feeling irrevocably altered.
“One single moment in my life had forever altered who I was. What if this was her life-altering moment?”
As much as David was a mystery, Maygen was an unexpected surprise. On the outside she looked like a spoiled princess, living in luxury and raised in wealth. However, as we got to know this character over the course of the story, A.M. Madden revealed a heroine who was warm, down-to-earth, humble, hardworking, and unfailingly kind. I connected with Maygen immediately, drawn to her intelligence, charm, and obviously loyal and sweet personality. She was independent, funny, and patient (a trait that would prove to be indispensible to her evolving relationship with David). As tough as she was, A.M. Madden made sure the reader also saw Maygen’s insecurities and vulnerability, pieces of this complex character that made her easy to relate to and impossible not to love. Her relationships with her friends, co-workers, and family all came together to paint a beautiful picture of the woman who would steal David’s heart so completely and I found myself not only rooting for Maygen but significantly connecting with her as well.
“I’m not going to pretend you aren’t saving me in so many ways. I’m also not going to pretend I don’t need you in my life.”
As always, A.M. Madden filled out the story with a fantastic group of secondary characters that oftentimes stole the show. I absolutely adored seeing more of Nick and Angela, enjoying glimpses of their well-deserved happy ending. Maygen’s co-workers, on the other hand, provided the fresh faces and much-needed levity that balanced out all of the angst and made me laugh. A.M. Madden’s carefully crafted storyline ensured that this book flowed smoothly. Her words expertly embraced the slow, sensual moments one minute and quickly built the tone of suspense the next. Maygen and David’s journey definitely came with a few surprises and I enjoyed each unanticipated twist and turn. A.M. Madden’s writing was utterly enchanting, fearlessly bringing this story to life with her breathtaking imagery, heartfelt emotion, witty dialogue, and unapologetic steam. True to the series, Dark Corners explores love bent by duty, sacrifice, and the scars of service. A.M. Madden has absolutely outdone herself with David and Maygen’s story, delivering a rare and wondrous romance that is both absolutely heart wrenching and blindingly hopeful. I can’t wait to see what this author has in store for us next!
