Eons ago, Sirens were exiled from the Mortal Realm, held captive in a cove at the edge of Tartarus. They are beautiful beyond imagination, but deadly beyond compare. And they have set their sights on breaking free.
They risk everything to sneak out of Tartarus and ascend to the forbidden Mortal Realm with one mission—mate with human men to dilute their cursed bloodline and form a new race of Sirens, free from their prison in the Underworld. But for a Siren to become pregnant, she must revert to her True Form, a horrifying sight that drives men to madness, and makes killing them a mercy. In modern San Francisco, the Sirens blend in; each woman has a singular goal, and each man she meets is her prey…
Melody Seirina has always been different. She doesn’t believe that she’ll be able to bring herself to take a human life, even when the fate of her people rests on her willingness to do so. She’s even more convinced when she meets Dean, a charming cop who sees a loving future with her. Their romance threatens two worlds, the one the Sirens fled from, and the one that will destroy them if they can’t complete their mission as soon as possible. Melody will have to make a decision—risk the future of her people or follow her heart.
The incredible Cast duo is at it again; they’ve teamed up to deliver The Scent of Salt & Sand and it was out of this world! I’ve loved the Escaped series coming from Kristin Cast and how it’s rooted in mythology and fantasy. However, there was something about this next novella in the series that captivated me in an entirely different way. I was under the sirens’ spell and unable to put it down!
“Imagine the water is an orchestra and each current is a note being played. The waves are voices, singing a tune that changes with the tide. If you can hear its music, you know how to harmonize with it. Do that and the sea will never hurt you. It will only wrap around you and sing your favorite songs.”
There are times when I pick up a novella and the pacing is all off so I’m left feeling frustrated and incomplete. However, I am so happy to say that this didn’t happen with The Scent of Salt & Sand. Everything from that first meet cute, to the course of the relationship between Melody and Dean, to that final resolution felt so perfect; it wasn’t rushed and it wasn’t a slow build up with a bang of an ending. The characters are fresh and fun, with intriguing backgrounds that will leave you wanting more from their stories. I do have to say that my favorite part of this novella was the mythological aspects. I love seeing how these two authors bring the past to life in a modern day society, with twists that I never saw coming. They take these personalities and so effortlessly assimilate them into modern places and workings and it stays true to the traits you’d associate with the creatures of these legends. It’s incredible!
“His eyes were warm and inviting, two calm pools in the midst of the sea of chaos that was San Francisco. But she didn’t like them settled on her, not right now, anyway.”
That ending totally took me for a spin, and left me hardcore aching for more. Though this is part of the Escaped series, I didn’t feel like it was completely necessary to read the first two books in the series previous to reading this one, though they do lay the framework for how the storylines work. I honestly hope that Kristin and P.C. Cast never give up writing because when they’re together, it is pure magic in every form of the word. The Scent of Salt & Sand almost felt like the start of something new and I’d be ridiculously excited to see where it goes!
