Title: Simple Perfection
Author: Abbi Glines
Series: Rosemary Beach #6
Release Date: September 23, 2013
Woods had his perfect life mapped out for him. Rise up the ranks of the family business. Marry the rich girl of his parents’ dreams. Pretend that wealth and privilege was all he’d ever wanted. Then a girl named Della breezed into town, a beautifully imperfect stranger who captured his heart and opened his eyes to a new kind of future. Woods is ready and willing to sacrifice everything for her when the sudden death of his father leaves him with his mother to care for and a business to manage.
Della is determined to be strong for Woods, even as she’s quietly falling to pieces. No matter how far from home she’s run, the ghosts of her past have never stopped haunting her. Struggling to hide her true feelings from Woods, Della fears she can’t be his rock without dragging him down into the darkness with her. But is she strong enough to let go of the last thing holding her together?
Simple Perfection had me riding a rollercoaster of emotions as I experienced the heartfelt conclusion to Woods and Della’s story. Abbi Glines reeled me right back in as this incredible couple faced down the unexpected events from the end of the first book and navigated the life-altering changes that resulted. I loved seeing Della and Woods standing by each other’s sides. Their unconditional love and loyalty filled my heart and left me utterly content. Woods and Della’s connection, now tried and tested, seemed stronger than ever, while their undeniable chemistry continued to spark and make their journey truly enchanting. Of course, that’s not to say that this couple didn’t deal with their share of issues this time around. Abbi Glines loves breaking hearts repeatedly before finally piecing them back together again and Simple Perfection was no exception. However, it was the turmoil and angst that made this novel feel so much sweeter and left me completely head over heels for Della and Woods.
“Sometimes what we want isn’t what’s best for us.”
While the first book was very much focused on Woods and his journey to decide what kind of man he wanted to be, this book was all about Della. For that reason, Simple Perfection felt more emotionally charged to me as Della’s past was incredibly dark and held some serious hurt. Not only did our heroine struggle with her sense of self-worth, but she was also forced to finally confront the nightmares that haunted her. At times this meant that she acted brashly in an attempt to spare Woods from her self-perceived destructive personality. As my heart ached for Della, Abbi Glines put this character through the wringer, forcing her to face her demons and allowing her to eventually evolve into the brave, independent, and secure woman I knew lay beneath the surface. Woods and Della had to fight for each other, but they also had to fight for themselves in Simple Perfection and the outcome was absolutely beautiful character growth.
“She was brave enough to live life, even after enduring the monsters that had terrorized her in her room as a child. And they weren’t pretend. She’d faced real monsters and she had survived. There was no one as fucking tough as this woman.”
Abbi Glines’ writing is as fantastic as ever. The pacing was perfect, pulling me right back into the story and keeping me hooked until the very last page. The storyline had its share of twists and turns, keeping me on my toes and stealing my breath a time or two as Della and Woods’ journey went in directions I hadn’t expected. While Abbi Glines is known for not pulling any punches, she proves that once again with this book. Simple Perfection made me feel deeply and unexpectedly, each heartbreaking moment perfectly balanced with sexy encounters and lighthearted teasing that kept a grin on my face. Colorful imagery, witty dialogue, blush-inducing steam, and good-natured humor brought this story to life, while vibrant secondary characters filled Abbi’s fictional world and left me wanting more of Rosemary Beach. Abbi Glines is the queen tease and I can’t wait to hear from Tripp, Bethy, and Grant as the series continues. Simple Perfection is smart, sassy, and sweet – the perfect conclusion to Woods and Della’s unforgettable journey.
Gah! Simple Perfection picks back up in the throes of drama that Twisted Perfection ended in, and my poor heart! Similar to how I felt with the first book of this couple’s journey, I forgot how much Glines’ writing evokes the emotion and memories of being a new adult. Simple Perfection is a journey of growth and transformation while also putting readers on an emotional roller coaster that is sure to make you smile in some moments, while pulling at your heartstrings in others.
“She was betting on me. When the rest of the world thought I was hopeless, she bet on me. She believed in me. So had Woods.”
While the romance between Woods and Della is undeniable, Della stole the show in this book. Her story hit something so deep in my heart that I could not put the book down. I had to continue reading and see how it all came together, even when I already knew the ending. It’s just one of those stories that takes you on a ride and leaves you a better person for having read it. To see her gain this inner strength and conquer her past was so remarkably done, and I think that it was those moments that made me know Abbi Glines was a writer I would not forget.
“Right now, she needs to find the strength inside herself. The strength she doesn’t think is there.”
I also appreciated that we got a wider look at the friends of the group in this installment. Glines paved the way for future novels with the introductions and morsels of stories. I forgot just how well she was able to do this. Whenever a new book in the series came out, I would always find a way to somehow love it more than the last. Now that I’ve completed the entire series and met all the couples, I do have to say that I think Woods and Della have my favorite books. Their story is powerful and everything that the New Adult genre should be. They’re introduced to things every adult in this stage goes through, but also through things that nobody should ever have to endure. There’s something unique and special that I’m sure will have me re-reading them again soon. I can’t recommend this series enough to other readers!
