In her twenties, Emma Blair marries her high school sweetheart, Jesse. They build a life for themselves, far away from the expectations of their parents and the people of their hometown in Massachusetts. They travel the world together, living life to the fullest and seizing every opportunity for adventure.
On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse is on a helicopter over the Pacific when it goes missing. Just like that, Jesse is gone forever. Emma quits her job and moves home in an effort to put her life back together. Years later, now in her thirties, Emma runs into an old friend, Sam, and finds herself falling in love again. When Emma and Sam get engaged, it feels like Emma’s second chance at happiness.
That is, until Jesse is found. He’s alive, and he’s been trying all these years to come home to her. With a husband and a fiancé, Emma has to now figure out who she is and what she wants, while trying to protect the ones she loves.
Who is her one true love? What does it mean to love truly? Emma knows she has to listen to her heart. She’s just not sure what it’s saying.
How do you go about reviewing a book that made you laugh and cry, and simply FEEL so profoundly? I’m staring at my screen and trying to find words and they’re not coming to me. With One True Loves, Taylor Jenkins Reid has delivered a poignantly beautiful story of love and loss. She has given readers an angsty love triangle that leaves readers falling in love with two wonderful men, and sympathizing for a heroine undergoing unfathomable circumstances.
“When you lose someone you love, it’s hard to imagine that you’ll ever feel better. That, one day, you’ll manage to be in a good mood simply because the weather is nice or the barista at the coffee shop on the corner remembered your order. But it does happen.”
The novel spans a lifetime so I became instantaneously attached and invested in these characters and their fates. The three had known each other from high school so it’s not even like one could say he had more of a history with Emma. Each man possessed different characteristics, ones that any girl could fall in love with. Jesse was adventurous and pushed Emma to discover new boundaries and reach for the dreams she didn’t know she had. On the other hand, Sam was reserved and almost a boy next door type of feel. Where Jesse wanted to travel the world and establish his own roots, Sam embraced the things he was good at had an appetite for learning. They could not be more different, yet the attributes they each brought out in Emma made her the woman she was destined to become.
“By loving the two of them, I am no longer sure about either. And by being unsure, I might just lose them both.”
Taylor Jenkins Reid is one of those authors that I’ve heard so much hype about but hadn’t had time to read. Now that I’ve finished one of her novels, I’m aching to go on a binge read of all the rest. There is a magical quality to her writing; something that awakens every sense and fiber in your soul. She is able to create characters that burrow into your veins and make you feel alive. I was nodding my head with some of the heartbreakingly beautiful sentiments she discussed. I wept at the impossible situation these three were in, but also at how much I could relate in certain ways.
“There is other love out there for me. But it’s different. It isn’t this. It isn’t this exact love. It’s better and it’s worse. But I guess that’s sort of the point of love between two people – you can’t re-create it. Every time you love, everyone you love, the love is different. You’re different in it.”
One True Loves has a blurb that pulls you in and it certainly delivers on everything it promises. There is heartbreak and warmth, and a journey of discovering what it means to truly love another human being. Readers have their hearts touched by an example of how love evolves and changes, resulting in who we become as people. This story is one I could feel in the very depth of my bones to the point that I already want a reread. This author is incredibly phenomenal and I can’t wait to see what else she pens. I lost myself in the pages of One True Loves, but by the end, I somehow found myself too – and that is the reason this author will forever have a faithful reader in me.
