Worth the Fight

Synopsis

It didn’t matter that the ref called it a clean hit. Nico Hunter would never be the same.

Elle has a good life. A job she loves, a great apartment, and the guy she’s been dating for more than two years is a catch and a half. But it’s boring…and she strives to keep it that way. Too many emotions are dangerous. Her own past is living proof of what can happen when you lose control.

Then Nico walks into Elle’s office and everything changes…for both of them. But what can the tattooed, hard-bodied MMA fighter and the beautiful and always steady attorney have in common? A lot more than they bargained for.

Review

Worth the Fight is a sweet, angsty fighter romance that will make your heart ache and swoon. This was my first novel from Vi Keeland and it definitely won’t be the last. Nico and Elle’s story was sexy, emotional, and ultimately full of hope. The instant connection between this unlikely couple was intriguing and I found myself invested in their journey right from the start. I loved seeing the chemistry between them build from a few sparks to an unmistakable flame, adding a scorching touch to this heartfelt novel. Vi Keeland’s writing felt comfortable and familiar, allowing me to lose myself effortlessly in her words and fall in love with the family of characters that call this fictional world home. Worth the Fight definitely dealt with some issues beyond the normal scope of the fighter romance genre and it was this angst-inducing aspect of the story that really captivated me.

“I’m a character in my story, going through the chapters of my life as if it was written by an imaginary person, when I should be the author.”

Nico was absolutely swoon-worthy. His swagger and confidence pulled me in only to become totally hooked by his surprisingly romantic side. As Vi Keeland unraveled this character, my heart ached for the pain and anguish that he endured and I quickly found myself in awe of his strength, which went far beyond the physical. The emotional scars he carried tied him to Elle in a totally unexpected way. This common ground gave their relationship an added layer that ensured my complete investment in a happily ever after. Elle was easy to relate to, she was smart and independent and I loved the back and forth she shared with Nico. I appreciated the complexity of her emotions, especially in regards to her own past, although I definitely think her history needed to be explored a bit further in order to really tie her demons with Nico’s. I loved seeing Elle step into Nico’s world, her polished life a stark contrast to his gritty world. This couple’s differences and similarities came together to create something truly special and I hope we’ll get to see this couple again as the series continues.

“No one’s ever looked at me the way he looks at me. I feel a silent rumble in my gut and I know something’s just changed in me forever. I’ll never be able to go back to comfortable and nice after feeling whatever it is burning between us.”

Vi Keeland rounded out Nico and Elle’s world with a handful of great secondary characters. Not only am I curious to hear more about these peripheral personalities, but their relationships with the main couple, also helped to further develop Nico and Elle for the reader, exposing facets of their personalities we might not otherwise have seen. For the most part, Worth the Fight was well paced, ensuring a fluidity that made this an easy read. I was slightly disappointed by the way Nico’s issues were wrapped up, having expected a more visceral, painful moment of absolute vulnerability that never really came. While his frustrating and closed-off behavior was true to character, the moment where he finally laid himself bare for Elle was over before it ever really began. All in all, Vi Keeland skillfully balanced the intense emotion, delicious steam, and easy banter that made this story such an enjoyable read. She has certainly captured my attention with Worth the Fight and guaranteed that I’ll be back for more of this series!
