Title – Scarlet Rain
Author – Kristin Cast
Publication Date – May 17, 2016
Series – The Escaped, #2
In Amber Smoke, Kristin Cast introduced her legions of readers to Alek and Eva. Alek, immortal son of the Furies, has been charged to save his home and recapture the souls of the damned, evil creatures who escaped Tartarus into the Mortal Realm. He can’t, however, do it alone…
Eva has discovered that she has been both blessed and cursed with powers beyond her comprehension. With a destiny to fulfill, she cannot escape the beings who will stop at nothing to destroy her.
Now, in Scarlet Rain, the Nosoi—spirits of plague—have been unleashed on the Mortal Realm, releasing a pandemic as clever and adaptable as it is insidious. Alek and Eva must capture and banish the Nosoi back to their Underworld prison—but Eva has yet to harness the abilities needed to defeat such a powerful enemy, and Alek sustains catastrophic wounds in the attempt. They must rely on detective James Graham, and Eva’s best friend Bridget, if they are to even slow down the plague. But can mere mortals come through in the face of such overwhelming peril?
Scarlet Rain is the second book in The Escaped series from Kristin Cast and I am truly loving watching this author find her voice, unique from the books she has co-authored. She is staying in a similar realm to the House of Night series in that it’s in the paranormal genre. However, the characters are new and fresh with some interesting and fun twists. The storyline is definitely not one I’ve previously come across and kept me on my toes.
“We each have our own destiny. Now you can be sure this is yours.”
Scarlet Rain, like Amber Smoke, is written in the third person. A majority of what I read is written in first so it did take some getting used to, but after a round of being in each character’s head, I was able to smoothly transition from one to the next. One of my biggest problems with the first book in the series was the pacing and I kind of wondered how that would come into play in Scarlet Rain. I am happy to say that this second novel was vastly different from Amber Smoke. There were no scenarios to set the stage for so the book honestly felt full throttle from beginning to end. Cast included so much action and intrigue that drove the novel forward that I had the hardest time putting it down.
“What I wanted does not matter. The fog has lifted. Now I see more clearly who I am and what my purpose is. I’m this realm’s warrior, and nothing will distract me from my goal.”
I’ve always been fascinated by mythology so I really loved the incorporation of it in this series. I think it may even be what attracted me to it in the first place. That being said, it made me a little giddy to see the story be brought back there a little bit more. I felt like we got a bigger glimpse into Tartarus and the magical aspect of this world Cast has created. Furthermore, it felt like this is only a taste of what is to come from this author. With the way she introduced certain things and the way the novel ended, I have a feeling we’ll be diving much deeper into this portion of things, which REALLY excites me!
“Be kind to yourself and mirror that kindness in your thoughts. After all, your thoughts are with you always. Change them, and you change your world.”
Overall, Scarlet Rain is a fascinating read that gripped me intensely. I loved getting into these characters’ heads and watching them really grow into their fated positions. The ending was a tad bit abrupt for me, so I am curious to see where Cast will choose to go next. Nonetheless, she is a tremendously talented writer with the ability to cast a spell on me. Scarlet Rain was absolutely enchanting, and will satisfy all your cravings for answers from Amber Smoke, yet leave you salivating for book three of The Escaped!
