Author: Mia Sheridan
Series: Sign of Love #1
Release Date: December 3, 2013
Evie and Leo met in foster care as children and formed a bond of friendship. As they grew, their bond turned to love, and they vowed to make a life together when they turned 18 and were no longer a part of the system.
When Leo unexpectedly gets adopted as a teen and moves to another city, he promises Evie that he will contact her as soon as he gets there and come back for her in a few short years. She never hears from him again.
Now eight years later, in spite of the odds, Evie has made a life for herself. She has a job. She has friends. She’s content. Then a man shows up out of the blue, claiming that her long lost love, Leo, sent him to check up on her. The attraction between them is undeniable. But, should she trust this sexy stranger? Or is he keeping a secret about what his connection to Leo is really all about and why Leo disappeared all those years ago?
I don’t know why I waited so long to dive into the Sign of Love series, but I am so glad I finally took the plunge! Mia Sheridan delivers a truly captivating love story that overflows with heartache and hope. Right from the start, Leo was nothing like I expected it to be and yet Mia Sheridan kept me riveted, desperate to see where she was going to take this surprising story. There was angst, heartbreak, beauty, joy, and the kind of love that warms you from the inside out. Leo is a story of broken souls fighting their way to a happily ever after and Mia Sheridan effortlessly captured Evie’s heart wrenching journey with her lyrical prose, breathtaking imagery, poignant monologues, and heartfelt confessions. I’ve officially fallen in love with this author and her all-consuming storytelling! My favorite part of Leo was the carefully nurtured relationship between our hero and heroine. Mia Sheridan captures their delicious chemistry and unparalleled emotional connection and delivers it to her readers in an utterly addictive way.
“We dreamed together, we planned a life together. We were so young, but we were so sure.”
Evie is the kind of heroine that takes up residence in your heart and never leaves. She’s been through more than most, seen so much pain, and experienced too much loss, yet her character is the definition of strength – exuding an appreciation for life that is incredibly rare and simply inspiring. She lives her life with gratitude for everything she has, everything she’s earned, and I found it impossible not to become totally enamored by her. As the story progressed, Mia Sheridan methodically exposed pieces of Evie’s past, allowing readers to really grasp the emotional scars she’s suffered and giving this character an exquisite emotional depth that took my breath away. Jake stole my heart right from the beginning. His loyalty and kindness was touching and as Mia Sheridan unraveled this character, I found myself swooning. His triumph over the past made him the perfect match for Evie and I loved how they challenged each other to accept the parts of themselves that have been broken and encouraged one another to live vibrantly and without regret. The character growth they cultivated together was significant and simply stunning.
“But the only thing we’ll get from trying to figure out where another path would have taken us are questions there are no answers to, and heartbreak that can’t be healed.”
This story is told in alternating chapters of Evie and Jake’s present and Evie and Leo’s past. I absolutely adored the contrast between the youthful, naïve love and wistful dreaming Evie and Leo shared and the raw, imperfect love and intense connection she experienced with Jake. I found myself equally enchanted by both sides of Evie’s journey and consumed by the conflicting emotions she experienced throughout the story. Mia Sheridan fills out this fictional world with some incredibly lovable secondary characters. Landon, Nicole, and Mike gave Evie’s story a lightness that perfectly balanced the emotional angst. Nicole and Mike made my heart flutter with the unwavering friendship they shared with Evie while Landon kept me laughing at his crazy antics. Leo was beautifully written, carefully plotted, well paced, and expertly executed making this novel a phenomenal reading experience. Mia Sheridan has completely enchanted me and I am looking forward to devouring the rest of this series. If you enjoy a good heartfelt and breathtaking romance then Leo is an absolute must read!
For as long as I can remember, people have been telling me that reading a Mia Sheridan novel is an absolute must. I continued to say I knew, added each new release to my TBR, and kept forgetting they were there. When I found out I’d be meeting her, I knew it was finally time to bump them up to the top of my list. Now I’m simply kicking myself for not listening to my friends’ advice sooner. Leo is the first book in the Signs of Love series of standalones, and holy heck…I’m salivating for more!
“Maybe I’m an open book, or maybe love is like a magnifying glass straight into the sould of those who own your heart.”
This is a pretty difficult review to write without divulging any spoilers or secrets. Therefore, I’m going to keep it short and sweet. Sheridan’s writing is a style that is so magnetizing that it truly transports you to this world she’s created. She leaves readers invested in the story through the deep, meaningful connections between the characters, making it easy to fall in love with them quickly. She alternates between young love and a new love, which created such a fascinating dynamic to watch play out. I loved seeing Evie and Leo while they were saying goodbye, and then Evie picking up the pieces as an adult. I admired the ferocity, the independence, and most of all, the perseverance that shone through each of these personalities. I found pieces of myself in them which brought me comfort and an unexpected bond that I came to cherish.
“Life obviously took a lot from you, and I know you’ve been cut deep, but the fact that you relied on yourself to make it through and that you didn’t let it make you cynical or cold, that is all you. Own that.”
I will say that the plot is somewhat predictable, but in no way did it make me any less invested. In fact, I think it actually worked in Sheridan’s favor because it piqued my interest even more. I wanted to see how this author would put her own flair on it. Now that I’ve finished and know the ins and outs, I’m curious to see how others felt about it as well. I’m not sure if Sheridan comes from a broken home or just got into these characters’ heads, but she truly did them and their situations justice. Leo is a short, fascinating read that will pull you in instantaneously. I absolutely love the idea of characters based off the signs and I’m already dying to dive into the other books. With this author’s style and ability to make her characters feel so realistic, I have no doubt that I’ll have more raving reviews to come!
