Welcome to RK’s rock star life.
I was living the dream, I was full throttle, all in, one hundred percent on top of the world. But it’s a hell of a long fall back down when you finally crash and burn.
Welcome to the delusions, the final act, the coming-to-Jesus moment when there’s nothing left to do but look yourself in the mirror and ask… How did I get like this?
I am RK’s living nightmare. I am RK’s empty soul. I am RK’s unchecked fantasy world that makes no sense to anyone.
I only have one thing left. Just one girl holding my broken pieces together.
And even she might be a lie.
How the heck do I even begin to write this review? My eyes are still bugged out of my head, my jaw needs to be picked up off the floor, and my brain is desperately trying to unscramble itself in order to figure out what I just went through. Rock by JA Huss was incredibly intriguing, mind blowing, and all around a gripping novel that I found impossible to put down.
“I just needed to be reminded what it feels like to belong somewhere.”
I won’t touch on the storyline at all, simply because it’s filled with too many twists and turns that I don’t want to spoil. I want every reader to go in blind the way that I did; it’s honestly the best way to experience a story like this one. I will say that while I could guess a few of the surprises Huss revealed, the way she did it and suspense and anxiety leading up to those moments was absolute perfection. So if you’re one of those readers who can figure everything out and see the map, I’d still suggest diving into this one. The journey is just flawless, in my opinion.
“There’s no way forward without music. Not if we want to do more than exist. And life’s not worth living if you’re just existing.”
While reading Rock, I really felt compelled to not put it down and dig through. I wanted to know these characters’ stories and experience all of their emotions. I had a deep, feel it in my gut, need to figure out their endings and be on the journey every step of the way to getting there. I think it’s just something about the way Huss writes. She has this insanely beautiful talent of making her readers relate to flaws, develop an understanding for the complexes, and root for the seemingly broken ones. It’s what continues to bring me back to every new release she has, trusting the story she will deliver.
“She is inches from me. And a whole other world away.”
I don’t know how Huss continues to develop new, fresh ideas, but it is certainly what will keep me coming back for more. Her storytelling ability feels effortless and I don’t think I will ever be able to get enough. I will be honest and say that I don’t read a ton of suspense novels, so my basis of comparison is somewhat weak, but from what I have experienced, Rock is definitely up there with the best of them!
