So many secrets. Nothing but secrets.
I started another life with a new husband, thirteen new sister wives and a new place to call home.
But the secrets weigh on me, on all of us.
And every secret leads back to the Prophet the, self-proclaimed, mouthpiece of God. The man I’ve worshiped since childhood, the man we obey without question.
And he’s the man who will destroy us all.
I must reveal his secrets.
Prove his betrayal, his lies and his deceit.
I will not be silenced, no matter how hard he tries.
And I will never give up. Ever.
In a book world filled with a lot of similar story lines, Melissa Brown’s Compound series stands out like a shining beacon. It’s refreshing and unique, while also not stretching completely beyond comfort zones, especially given the polygamist lifestyle topic. Wife Before Mother takes us back to the Compound that we became familiar with in Wife Number Seven, but to a very different side of it. I was so enthralled with the direction the novel took that I had the hardest time putting the book down.
“I was a mother first, a wife second. And my beloved Paul would just have to accept that.”
While Wife Number Seven focused very much on the romantic love aspect, I felt like Mother Before Wife was a lot more about the lengths we are willing to go to for our children, and just how powerful that love can be. Aspen was very devout to her faith, but never more than for her kids. At times, she was put into these awfully compromising situations and it was almost heartbreaking to see her struggle with what she had known all her life. However, I did love what little bits of romanticism that was included. I totally fell in love with Paul and most of what he stood for. It was such a stark contrast to what we have seen in other men of the Compound. Furthermore, I enjoyed getting to see about life on the Compound through Aspen’s eyes. Where Brinley was so anxious to escape the life, Aspen was incredibly devoted to it, which presented an entirely new viewpoint.
“But you’ve clearly put a wall up, and I’m unable to climb it.”
I can honestly say that the plot line really surprised me with this installment of the series. Brown created this whole scenario jam packed with action and heart-stopping moments. It astounded me how different she was able to make it from the previous books in the series. Not to mention, I’m legitimately invested in every single character we’ve come across and I’m dying to know how the story continues. She’s pulled you into this vortex, and I promise it will leave you panting for more!
“’I’m her mother,’ I screeched. ‘If I don’t protect her, protect all of them, then who will?’”
I’ve been anxious for the release of Mother Before Wife since the moment I realized it would be a series. While I wasn’t completely sure what to expect, I can say that Melissa Brown far exceeded all of my expectations. She has created a riveting, beautiful story of the different kinds of love we face in our everyday lives, about the roles women play in society. I was SUPER sad that the book ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, but I’m also intrigued at where this author will take us next, particularly from who we get to hear from in the next installment!
