Clarissa Wild has once again left my head spinning with her new novel, Ultimate Sin! When I started Ava’s story, I was worried that Clarissa was taking things a little too dark for my taste, but once I got past the first chapter or so, she surprised me completely. While Ultimate Sin is certainly a twisted story of dark secrets and tainted love, the journey that unfolds is not without light. There is a desperate search for redemption that carried an incredible emotional weight, giving this tale an unexpected poignancy that was mesmerizing. I found myself easily enthralled by Clarissa Wild’s carefully calculated world and deeply damaged characters. Ava and Marcus share a connection that is hard to describe, his motivations very much a mystery for the majority of the book. His secrets, although clearly capable of devastating Ava if ever revealed, only served to make the character that much more intriguing. Clarissa Wild’s vivid imagery and haunting words bring to life something truly unique with this story. Surprising me at every turn, Clarissa Wild finds a way to make me fall in love with even the ultimate sinner.
“His gaze creates feelings deep inside my heart, which I’d thought I’d buried long ago. Forges a connection I didn’t know could possibly exist between a Master and his servant. Turns us into something more than just Master and submissive. Makes us sinful, fated lovers.”
Ava broke my heart over and over again as Clarissa Wild unraveled this character. The extent of the damage done to this woman, both physically and mentally, was absolutely brutal. However, as she spent time with Marcus and learned about the world, she began to repair the broken pieces of herself in a way that was absolutely beautiful. I respected the way Clarissa navigated Ava’s traumatic past and the raw honesty with which she depicted the emotional ramifications of her experiences. The innate strength she gave this character was evident in the smallest of things, gradually building until we were left with a character whose transformation was nothing short of gratifying. Daniel was an unexpected addition to the story, providing a totally new perspective from which to experience Marcus and Ava’s relationship. What I liked most about this character was the role he played in Ava’s growth. His ability to relate to her on the most basic of levels allowed the reader to really feel for both of them, forging a connection that encouraged readers to invest in Ava’s journey.
“It might seem silly to some, but I’ve never been given the explicit consent to feel and think whatever I want. It feels like I’ve been handed one of the most treasured gifts in the world.”
As always, the storyline is more complicated than I ever could have imagined. Clarissa Wild weaves a tangled web that only really becomes clear near the conclusion of the story. The mystery and suspense this imparts on the tone of the novel kept me reading, anxious to solve the puzzle. There were a few points throughout the book where things moved a little slowly, but for the most part the heightened emotions and constant character evolution kept Ultimate Sin moving at an enjoyable pace. Clarissa Wild loves to hide pieces of her previous stories throughout her novels and I found myself grinning every time I stumbled upon a new connection. It makes the twisted world she has created in her mind come to life on the pages, giving her work a sense of unified tangibility. Ultimate Sin is scorching hot, unapologetically gritty, and full of shocking twists. With a surprising amount of heart, Clarissa Wild delivers a powerful story of sin, suffering, and redemption. Ultimate Sin is one reading experience you won’t want to miss.
I shift positions and feel him squirt some liquid over my back. The sponge gently touches my back, and he caresses me with it, carefully moving over each and every one of my scars, almost as if to outline them.
“How did you get your scars?” he asks after a while.
“Lashes. Many of them.”
He squeezes the sponge out over my shoulder and continues to massage me with it.
“I think they’re beautiful. Do you know why?”
“No,” I answer, feeling the warmth of his touch.
“Because they make you who you are. And I like you … just the way you are.”
I glance over my shoulder, a sudden rush of heat gathering at my cheeks. He smiles, and at that moment, I feel the butterflies flood my stomach.
“Thank you …” I mutter.
He places the sponge on the side of the tub and then wraps his arms around my shoulders, his chin leaning on me. “You know … I didn’t just like fucking you … I mean it was amazing, but I don’t just like you because of that. I like you … because of who you are. I like you as more than just … a servant,” he whispers into my ear.
I take a deep breath as his lips part and he places a gentle kiss underneath my ear.
It suddenly feels so hot and steamy in here, I forget how to breathe for a second.
“I like you for you, Ava. Just you.”
He plants another kiss right on my neck.
It feels so good … but sinful at the same time.
Like we’re not supposed to be doing this at all.
Master Marcus isn’t here. He didn’t give us permission.
Yet I want nothing more than for him to continue.
For a moment, I even wish he’d just take me away so that I didn’t have a choice. So I didn’t have to make an excuse as to why I shouldn’t do it … it would be so simple not having any responsibility for my actions.
But I know that’s not how things work.
“Daniel …” I mutter.
“Shh …” he whispers into my ear, creating goosebumps all over my body. “It’s okay.”
“It’s not,” I whisper. “Master isn’t here.”
He continues to kiss me anyway, and I can’t help but close my eyes, my head leaning back because it needs more. I need more.
I need everything.
