Title – Effortless
Author – S.C. Stephens
Series – Thoughtless, #2
From the #1 New York Times bestselling author S.C. Stephens comes the new adult series everyone is talking about—and a love triangle you won’t forget.
After being caught in the middle of a love triangle that led to a devastating betrayal, Kiera pledged to learn from the mistakes she’d made. She was determined to never again inflict that kind of pain on anyone, especially the soulful, talented man who held her heart. But life offers new challenges for every relationship, and when Kiera’s love is put to the ultimate test, will it survive? Love is easy…trust is hard.
I’ll admit that while I enjoyed Thoughtless, I was a little nervous to jump in and read Effortless because of the heroine, Kiera. Furthermore, as Effortless began and I could understand where it was going, I got a little nervous that it would be too much like the first book’s storyline. However, I was proven wrong on both accounts and am glad that I stuck it through because I definitely enjoyed it more than the first one.
“This isn’t goodbye, okay. There are no goodbyes…not between us.”
I really loved both Kiera’s and Kellan’s transformations in Effortless. Although she still retained some of her childish ways, I could definitely see some of Kiera’s insecurities fade away. It bothered me that she continuously said she wasn’t the same person as she was before, yet she was hiding the fact that Denny returned. She tried to justify it in her head, but as an outside third party, it was easy to tell where that route would get her. That being said, her thought processes changed in Effortless and that really reflected in her actions. As for Kellan, readers saw a whole different side to him. Where he was so confident in the first book and in pieces of this one, there was also a much bigger vulnerability in his character. Between worrying about Kiera and the issues with his family, it provided for a new outlook on this couple and added a new facet to their relationship.
“Sometimes family was the cruelest form of love there was, for no one could hurt you more than the people who created you.”
My favorite part about Effortless was the exploration of trust in a relationship. Because Kiera and Kellan came together by cheating on someone who meant so much to both of them, it caused some tension in their relationship, but it felt very genuine. With Kellan being gone the way Denny was in Thoughtless, it naturally brought up the insecurities. He didn’t know if he could trust her, and she didn’t know if he would succumb to groupies. The secrets that they kept from the other probably didn’t help much either. However, it felt like a very accurate portrayal of the consequences from getting together the way that they did. It definitely provided for some very down moments on the roller coaster ride, but it made me appreciate the ups even more.
“He could still make me feel like he was looking at me for the first time, not the thousandth time. He still gave me butterflies.”
Overall, there were some really cute moments in Effortless, especially when the whole gang was together and the side story with Anna. I really disliked all the secrets they tried to keep from each other because it felt a little juvenile. I also got frustrated that so much time was spent evaluating those secrets. However, I could appreciate that there was growth and maturity in both characters. There also seemed to be more action in Effortless which kept my attention. I’m really excited to see how their story ends in Reckless and love that I don’t have to wait for it to release!
