Tangled

Synopsis

Drew Evans is handsome and arrogant, he makes multimillion dollar business deals and seduces New York’s most beautiful women with just a smile. So why has he been shuttered in his apartment for seven days, miserable and depressed? He’ll tell you he has the flu. But we all know that’s not really true.

Katherine Brooks is brilliant, beautiful and ambitious. When Kate is hired as the new associate at Drew’s father’s investment banking firm, every aspect of the dashing playboy’s life is thrown into a tailspin. The professional competition she brings is unnerving, his attraction to her is distracting, his failure to entice her into his bed is exasperating.

Tangled is not your mother’s romance novel. It is an outrageous, passionate, witty narrative about a man who knows a lot about women…just not as much as he thinks. As he tells his story, Drew learns the one thing he never wanted in life, is the only thing he can’t live without.

I can’t quite wrap my head around the fact that Tangled is a debut novel! Emma Chase has not only put herself on my radar, but she will undoubtedly be a go-to author when I’m in need of a guaranteed laugh. Tangled is romantic comedy gold with a voice that is fun, fresh, and absolutely unforgettable. Written from Drew’s point of view, Emma Chase transports her readers into the hilarious psyche of a dedicated bachelor. Tangled is written conversationally, pulling me in from the very first page with the casual and friendly language that made Drew feel familiar. Emma Chase’s writing style is cunning, easily making me feel like an integral part of Drew’s story right from the start. Drew’s outrageous inner monologue kept me laughing, while the confusion at his evolving emotions made me roll my eyes more than a few times. Tangled is a definite win in my book, a must read for anyone who likes suave playboys, fierce women, and delicious doses of palpable sexual tension.

“Although my mind recognizes that Kate Brooks is now my rival, apparently my cock hasn’t gotten the memo. And he, judging from his reaction, still wants to make friends.”

Kate and Drew are the perfect match. Emma Chase has written these two with an indescribable connection and an explosive chemistry. They’re competitive, argumentative, and unquestionably attracted to one another. Every exchange between them is heady with lust, laughter, and a little bit of love. Their witty banter, innuendo-laden conversations, and moments of simple honesty made this couple absolutely addictive. I connected immediately with Kate’s feisty, intelligent, and kind character. She was refreshing and strong, the perfect opponent for all of Drew’s games. While initially a perpetual bachelor, Drew’s easy charm eventually gave way to something more, an unspoken sweetness that had me falling hard. Emma Chase did a fantastic job developing this character, giving him an unexpected depth that was impossible to ignore. This couple was truly something special and I loved every single minute of their maddeningly frustrating journey.

“Do you think she enjoys the verbal foreplay as much as I do? She’s got to. She’s so good at it.”

Rounding out Kate and Drew’s story was a colorful cast of secondary characters that kept me grinning. The ridiculous antics and hilarious chats that inevitably occurred when this crazy crew got together took Tangled to the next level. Emma Chase has put together a fantastic storyline that is well paced and entertaining, making this read feel simply effortless. Filled with socially relevant humor, Tangled is totally relatable and satisfyingly inappropriate. I loved getting lost in the world Emma Chase has created. The vibrant characters were beautifully flawed, making them undeniably human and easy to love. The dialogue was witty, mischievous, and sometimes surprisingly sweet. Emma Chase is a romance ninja, enchanting me with her dirty humor only to hit me hard with an emotional sneak attack that made my heart break and falter and soar. Tangled is smart, sexy, and one of a kind, a phenomenal reading experience from start to finish.

By the time I read Tangled, Emma Chase had plenty of novels under her belt, so I thought nothing of it when I clicked. When I had realized that this was her debut novel, to say that I was shocked would be a total understatement. The writing was witty, the male point of view was absolute perfection, and the characters were irresistible. The storyline overall felt fresh and exciting, and I can honestly say I became addicted.

“When did it happen?  That’s what I can’t figure out. When did Kate become so important to me that I can’t function without her?”

The entirety of Tangled is written through our hero’s point of view, and I’m not sure I’ve ever read a book done that way. It definitely had me thinking Chase has a special insight into the man’s psyche. I cracked up at the crude honesty she gave his character as well as the humor filled inner thoughts he mentioned. Furthermore, there was a special quality in writing the book the way that the author did. It allowed readers to fall in love with Drew, yet simultaneously get annoyed and frustrated with his behavior at times. I definitely can’t rave about it enough!

“It’s never too late, man. The game’s not over; it’s just rain delayed.”

Though Drew is quite the charmer, I absolutely adored Kate’s character as well. She was so strong-headed and fierce in her convictions! I found myself secretly cheering for her whenever she gave Drew a taste of his own medicine. Too many times I see the heroine jump right back into bed with the hero, and I was ecstatic that it didn’t happen with them. They had to work to build trust and each step warmed me that much more. Not to mention, they had a sizzling amount of chemistry from the moment they met until I turned the last page.

“Actions win wars. Actions heal wounds. Not words. Words are cheap. Mine, in particular, have the combined value of pocket lint at the moment.”

Tangled was that firecracker popsicle that you eat on a summer afternoon. Every juicy bit satisfied my quench and yet, left me yearning for more at the same time. Emma Chase has created a masterpiece with this first book in the series and I’m already drooling for more. She’s definitely become an author I’ll be checking out for the rest of her books, too!
