ARE YOU READY TO TAKE A WALK?
Alasdair Masters is in a rut. He just hit forty, has been nearly celibate for the past year, and his life has turned into a daily sequence of lonely patterns that revolve around avoiding human contact.
His tidy life is turned on its head when a hot young blonde at the gym that’s been pseudo-stalking him decides to rock his world. A very young blonde. Way, way too young for him. The problem is, he can’t seem to tell her no, and she just keeps coming back for more.
It doesn’t help that he’s ninety percent sure she’s a criminal, and still, he can’t seem to turn her down. What is a dull introvert to do when a chaotic cyclone that oozes sexuality comes twisting into his life?
At first, he thinks she’ll give him a heart attack, but after his twenty-year marriage ended a year ago, he’s been a little lost, and when she comes crashing into his life, he realizes that he’s never felt more alive.
Is a walk on the wild side just what he needs to get his life on track or a disaster in the making? Is it possible for someone that much younger to be just what he needs, or is she a fortune hunter, as everyone keeps telling him? Is it his hormones telling him that the mysterious younger woman is the one, or could it be more?
R.K. Lilley has crafted quite a fascinating web of mysterious motives, incessant lust, and peculiar lies with The Wild Side. From the moment Dair becomes aware of Iris’ presence, the tone of the story was suspicious. R.K. Lilley had me on high alert, wondering what it was Iris wanted from Dair and why she pursued him so relentlessly. Both of these characters have been written to be incredibly intriguing and it is the prospect of trying to unravel them that really powers the first installment of the trilogy. Dair’s life seems to have hit a roadblock, his heart broken and confidence damaged along the way. R.K. Lilley wrote this character with a vulnerability and emotional fragility that allowed me to easily connect with him and understand his role in the story. Iris, on the other hand, exudes a confidence that is blinding. Her innate sexuality and aggressive personality make for the perfect distraction, preventing Dair and the reader from learning anything real about her. R.K. Lilley has meticulously written both of these characters in a way that maintains the mystery while still keeping the readers invested.
“She was young. I was old. She was wild. I was tame. What on earth were we doing here? How the hell would we ever fit into each other’s lives? The answer was simple and bleak. We didn’t and we wouldn’t.”
Dair and Iris are off to a seriously sexy start and I’m surprised the pages didn’t catch fire with as many times as R.K. Lilley turned up the heat in The Wild Side. She certainly wrote a highly combustible chemistry between these two and at times they were downright insatiable. Serials are tricky because inevitably you’ll come to a point where the author is laying groundwork for something later on or building up the emotional/physical connection between the characters and as a result the storyline doesn’t move forward very much. Hardly noticeable when a story is told in a cohesive manner, it becomes much more evident when you only get one piece of the puzzle at a time. I’m sure things will make a lot more sense as the rest of the story unfolds and I trust R.K. Lilley is preparing us for something big, but for now we don’t really know what’s going on in the grand scheme of things. The first novella in a trilogy, The Wild Side is hot, tantalizing, and intriguing. It will definitely leave you wanting, desperate to know what is next for Dair and Iris and anxious to see what twists and turns R.K. Lilley has up her sleeve.
