Title: All the Pretty Lies
Author: M. Leighton
Series: Pretty #1
“Live, no regrets.”
Sloane Locke has led a sheltered life. However, with a history like hers, she can understand why her brothers and her father want so much to protect her. She has gone along with it for twenty long years, but those days are over. For the girl who never makes promises, Sloane has made a pact with herself that things will change on her twenty-first birthday. So when the clock strikes midnight, Sloane strikes out to spread her wings and break a few rules.
In addition to inking skin, Hemi Spencer possesses many talents. Controlling himself has never been one of them. It’s never had to be. He’s lived a life of indulgence for as long as he can remember. Right up until tragedy struck. Now, he’s nothing but controlled. He’s a man on a mission, one who will let nothing and no one stand in his way.
Nothing in their lives could’ve prepared Sloane and Hemi for what they’d find in each other—distraction and obsession, love and possession. But the one thing they can’t find is a future. Neither one has been totally honest. And they’ll soon learn that the devil is in the details. In the details and in the lies.
How far will two people go to live in the now when the now is all they’ve got?
All the Pretty Lies was the first book I’d read by M. Leighton and she had me hooked right from the start. I lost myself in the storyline, drawn to the emotions and mistakes that come from being a twenty-something. I was impressed with the colorful cast of loveable characters and the easy relationships they shared. It wasn’t hard to get absorbed by their world and by the time I was finished with All the Pretty Lies I couldn’t wait to hear more from some of the secondary characters. Hemi and Sloane had a chemistry that was incredibly addictive. Sloane’s innocence from her sheltered life was such a strong contrast to Hemi’s hungry soul that had been tainted by life and loss, yet their differences created a delicious friction. From the moment they met, M. Leighton has some serious sparks flying, their chemistry undeniable. As their journey continued I was mesmerized by their obviously deeper connection, anxious to see where M. Leighton planned on taking this great couple.
“Hemi’s eyes delve deep into mine, like he’s trying to see where the butterflies live, where they were born and what they’ve been through.”
I fell hard for Hemi and Sloane. Both of these characters were well written, entertaining, and thoughtful. Sloane’s desperate need to spread her wings made for some pretty fun moments. She was easy to relate to as she stepped out from under her family’s control and lived her life on her own terms for the first time ever. As the story progressed, M. Leighton carefully developed Sloane, allowing her to evolve into an independent, adventurous, and assertive woman capable of keeping up with Hemi. Hemi had me swooning in no time. I could feel the impact of his presence radiating off the pages of this novel, overwhelming me with his strong, protective, sexy, and possessive nature. M. Leighton clued us in from the beginning that he was hiding some serious pain and that his intentions were not all that they seemed to be. I enjoyed watching him slowly unravel around Sloane, letting her in a little bit at a time and revealing an emotional depth to this character that absolutely blew me away.
“You’re the one who’s always talking about spreading your wings and taking chances and experiencing new things. You can’t do any of that and not risk a little heartache.”
Aside from the great characters, M. Leighton has crafted an incredibly compelling storyline with All the Pretty Lies. With both of our main characters keeping secrets, I couldn’t help but be constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. While I anticipated the truth coming to light, M. Leighton kept me invested with the emotional aspect of this book and the developing relationship between Hemi and Sloane. All the Pretty Lies was well paced, only really hitting a short lull in the story once. Each turn in the plot added to the tension, building up to the moment when Hemi and Sloane’s lives would change all over again. When the truth about Hemi’s appearance in Sloane’s town comes to light, M. Leighton does not disappoint. She skillfully delivered the emotional blows, making my heart ache for Sloane and unexpectedly, for Hemi as well. All the Pretty Lies was an emotional rollercoaster, the pages filled with lust, humor, uncertainty, loss, defiance, and love. M. Leighton has expertly captured the angst of new adulthood and the all-consuming nature of fierce love. I’ll definitely be back for more from this talented author!
