Ivy Lee, a talented tattoo artist who spent the early part of her twenties on the move, is looking for a place to call home. She thinks she might have finally found it working in her uncle’s tattoo shop in San Francisco. But all that changes when a robbery turns deadly, compelling her to pack up her things yet again.
When they need the best, they call him. That’s why Sebastian Riker is back in California, cleaning up the mess made after a tattoo shop owner with a penchant for blackmail got himself shot. But it’s impossible to get the answers he needs from a dead body, leaving him to look elsewhere. Namely, to the twenty-something-year-old niece who believes this was a random attack. Who needs to keep believing that until Sebastian finds what he’s searching for.
Ivy has one foot out of San Francisco when a chance encounter with a stranger stalls her departure. She’s always been drawn to intense men, so it’s no wonder that she now finds a reason to stay after all, quickly intoxicated by his dark smile, his intimidating strength, and his quiet control.
That is, until Ivy discovers that their encounter was no accident—and that their attraction could be her undoing.
I have yet to discover an author who can write raw and gritty characters quite like K.A. Tucker can. This entire series has been a phenomenal collection of broken souls and K.A. Tucker has expertly captured each of their unique and unforgettably heart wrenching journeys. Surviving Ice has definitely stolen my heart, earning its spot as my favorite novel of the series. Ivy and Sebastian were absolutely exquisite and their chemistry sparked off the pages from the moment they met. Their story was thrilling, emotional, and utterly captivating, hooking me from the start and taking me on a journey full of delicious tension, enchanting vulnerability, and addictive mystery. K.A. Tucker could not have created a more perfect match for the feisty and independent Ivy than the stoic and secretive Sebastian. Their shared stubbornness and strong personalities led to a friction between these two that resulted in steamy flirtations, amusing banter, and a sparkling chemistry that had me absolutely giddy. K.A. Tucker has really outdone herself with Surviving Ice!
“So, what do you think?”
“Fierce. Stunning. Captivating.”
Initially Ivy comes across as fierce, vibrant, and emotionally guarded but throughout the course of her story, K.A. Tucker takes Ivy and transforms her into a character that the readers can easily relate to and inevitably fall in love with. She carefully exposes the raw vulnerability and beautifully flawed woman that lies beneath the tattoos and tough attitude and I found myself connecting with her on an unexpected level. The unconditional love she holds for her uncle made my heart ache, while her fierce protectiveness for those she holds close filled me with pride. K.A. Tucker broke this character down and built her back up in way that felt natural, Ivy’s growth proceeding in perfect harmony with the progression of the plot and in tune to Sebastian’s own transformation.
“Just like that, my official purpose for being in San Francisco is over. I’m free to slip back into anonymity, to find a little slice of peaceful paradise and detach myself from human connection. To live simply and without feeling. Normally, I rush to get the earliest flight out. But for the first time, I don’t feel the same urge to run.”
The thing that captivated me about Sebastian from the moment he is introduced is the mystery that seems to shroud him. This character was very much an enigma, living an uncommon lifestyle filled with dangerous secrets. As his world was revealed I found myself with far more questions than answers, furthering my curiosity about the strong, ferocious man and the intrigue that follows him. Sebastian’s strong pull towards Ivy and his concern for her safety had me second-guessing the cold and unfeeling mask he tried so hard to portray. I found my heart quickly melting towards this man that was obviously much more complex and capable of feeling than I initially imagined. K.A. Tucker expertly utilized Sebastian’s interactions with Ivy to delve into this character, carefully unraveling everything I thought I knew about him and eventually revealing a morality, strong conscience, and kind heart that left me utterly smitten.
“ ‘I can just feel it. It’s like’ – she holds her hands in the air, her fingers rubbing together as if testing out an invisible fabric – ‘those first few warm days when the ice begins to melt. When you just know that the long, cold winter is over.’ ”
When I read a book by K.A. Tucker I know I’m going to get something totally new and different each and every time. Surviving Ice was certainly no exception. K.A. Tucker delivers heart wrenching emotion, pulse pounding suspense, and blush inducing heat in this captivating and electric story. K.A.’s writing absolutely sparkles and if possible, I fell even more in love with this author. Her words never fail to create magic and I am more than willing to fall under their enchantment over and over again. K.A. Tucker draws out the heart and soul of this story on each and every page with her lyrical prose, easy dialogue, fluid storyline, and impeccable pacing. Ivy and Sebastian are equal parts unlikely pair and soul mates. Their delicious flirtations and teasing humor provided the perfect balance to this suspenseful and emotionally heady story. Surviving Ice is another literary triumph for K.A. Tucker and a one-of-a-kind, must read adventure you won’t soon forget.
I don’t know whether to gush about how much I loved this series, or to complain about how sad I am that with the publication of Surviving Ice, it’s all over. Every single book follows a different character with a unique plotline – but similar enough that the series as a whole really works. While it’s hard to choose, I think that Surviving Ice by K.A. Tucker skyrocketed to the number one book in the series for me. Each has gotten better and better, but this novel made it feel like Tucker ended the series with a bang.
“She’s good at hiding her emotions. Just like I am. Aren’t the two of us a pair.”
From the very first moment we met Ivy, readers could just tell that she was going to get her own story. There was too much spunk to her character to not warrant a background, and boy did we get an adventure. I can honestly say that I was hooked from the moment I started the book. My heart was racing with anticipation and I could feel the blood running through my veins. While I had to keep turning the pages to see how it would all end, a part of me never wanted it to. Tucker kept the suspense at a high level, even with readers knowing bits of the story that the characters were unaware of. I found myself lost in the pages and in the unforgettable plot that was heartbreaking, heartwarming, and gripping beyond all else.
“And she’s perfect for you. I can just feel it. It’s like those first few warm days when the ice begins to melt. When you just know that the long, cold winter is over.”
Ivy was definitely the strongest, most independent heroine that I have read from Tucker. She was this no nonsense, take charge, feisty female who let no man be her voice. Because of these strong characteristics, I could easily relate to her. Whether it was in the moments I wanted to be like her, or in the instances where she sounded like me, I formed a bond with the woman she was. Ivy warred with her desire to have roots and have wings, and I loved watching that struggle play out in the pages. It’s something that I think everyone goes through as they transition into adulthood, and I know it’s something I still grapple with. Sebastian was a protective alpha male who I couldn’t get enough of. Even though I knew what he was capable of, there was something so alluring about his personality. He continued to run from having any roots, and that made him the perfect counterpart to Ivy. As a reader, we got to see them both confront an ideology they both held. However, I absolutely loved that it took each other to make that happen.
“How has he not figured out that everything has changed for me, and it’s all because of him?”
While I have appreciated all the books in the Burying Water series, K.A. Tucker pulled out all the stops for Surviving Ice. Her writing was impeccable, and the way that she drew readers in and kept them hooked was superbly done. Her characters are ones that you’ll want more from and the action will keep your adrenaline pumping. In case I haven’t made it abundantly clear, I was a huge fan of Surviving Ice. Although the series has now come to a close, I have the utmost faith that K.A. Tucker will knock the next series out of the park as well!
It’s just a regular ringtone. For me, though, it’s the wail of a war siren, and I’m immediately alert. There is only one person who has this number, and I didn’t expect him to use it again so soon.
The tile is cool against my bare feet as I roll out of bed. I collect the phone from the nightstand with one fluid movement, unhindered by sheets or the morning sluggishness that an average person might face. Stepping through the propped-open patio doors and onto the balcony, I answer with a low, curt “Yeah.” The sky is just beginning to lighten over the quiet bay. Dozens of boats sit moored below, their passengers lulled into deep sleep by the ocean air and rhythmic waves. I’m high enough up that I’m not likely to offend anyone with my lack of clothing, especially at this hour. Not that I’m truly concerned by it.
The code name is a sharp contrast to the warm breeze skating across my bare skin. My adrenaline begins to spike, all the same. Hearing it means that I will be forced to leave this haven soon. Sooner than I had hoped.
“How is recovery going?”
I instinctively peer down at the angry red scar on the outside of my thigh, where a bullet drilled into my flesh and muscle just three weeks ago, outside of Kabul. I nearly bled out before I made it to the doc. He patched me up on a makeshift operating table, buried deep in a maze of rooms, and charged me a hefty price.
“Like new,” I lie.
“Good.” Bentley’s voice is rich and smooth, a welcome sound in a sea of strangers. “Where are you now?”
I peer out over the beautiful vista of crystal blue water and whitewashed stone buildings, the volcanic rock cliffs in the distance, reluctant to divulge my location. I sank a good chunk of my last payout on renting this one-bedroom villa for the month. It’s my private sanctuary, where I can revel in anonymity and peace for a while, before finding somewhere else to drift to.
Bentley has never asked before.
But he also has the technical capabilities to trace this call. If he really wants to find out, then he will. In fact, the second I picked up, he probably already had his answer. “Where do I need to be?” I say instead.
