Author: Courtney Cole
Series: Nocte Trilogy #2
The truth shall set you free.
My name is Calla Price and I’m drowning.
My new world is a dark, dark ocean and I’m being pulled under by secrets.
Can I trust anyone? I don’t know anymore.
The lies are spirals. They twist and turn, binding me with their thorns and serpentine tongues.
And just when I think I have it figured out, everything is pulled out from under me.
I’m entangled in the darkness.
But the truth will set me free.
It’s just ahead of me, so close I can touch it. But even though it shines and glimmers, it has glistening fangs and I know it will shred me.
Are you scared?
I don’t even know where to begin with this book. Verum is just as beautifully convoluted and hypnotically mysterious as I suspected it would be. Courtney Cole has cast a powerful spell with this series, keeping me both riveted and feeling entirely off kilter. Yet again I find myself strangely connected to a story that I can’t even fully wrap my head around. The emotional pull of Calla’s journey is so strong, so confident in its chaos that I’m utterly enchanted by the madness. Calla’s devastation, confusion, frustration, and pain pours off the pages, filling me up until I was drowning in her turmoil. Verum takes us deep into Dare’s world, where nothing is as it seems and secrets outweigh truths. This time around Calla gets a look into Dare’s life and the consequences are shocking. This book pushes Dare and Calla’s relationship in unexpected ways, forcing them to fight for each other and themselves. As expected, while some questions were answered, Courtney Cole once again leaves us with a million more in their place.
“I have to admit that I do feel the danger. It crackles around me, everywhere. It’s here for me. I just don’t know why.”
Verum was much more telling when it came to Dare, his secrets, and his past. Seeing him in the place where he grew up and the way he reacted to being back was heartbreaking. While Calla’s distress remains his main concern, his own pain becomes increasingly evident, deepening my connection with this character. Courtney Cole did a fantastic job piecing together Dare in this book. Carefully and methodically she exposes fragments of him to provide some satisfaction for the reader while maintaining the overall mystery surrounding him. Calla’s growth in this book was just as purposefully orchestrated. I loved the strength she discovered in this book as she took a step back from everything and everyone in order to hopefully see things more clearly. While she desperately maintains her hold on Finn, she is conscious of her own actions, bringing hope that the whole truth will be revealed in time. Calla even discovers a few secrets about herself as her mind continues in its constant state of flux, splintering and repairing itself continuously in the most mind-boggling of ways.
“There are times we pay for sins that are not our own.”
Verum is simply enthralling. I’ve never felt so sure and simultaneously confused by a book before. Courtney Cole has written another masterpiece with this story. Her words are frustrating, confusing, maddening, and yet somehow so lyrical that I don’t even notice how insane it all sounds. She captures her characters with such vibrancy, detailing their world in a way that is positively enchanting. The plot for this series is astoundingly well crafted, every nuance and interaction playing an important part in unraveling the truth behind Calla and Dare. The cliffhangers in this series so far are absolutely vexing and Verum was no exception. Courtney Cole expertly takes her story to brand new heights, only to leave it there for readers to agonize over. Exploring Calla’s mind has become an addiction and Courtney Cole knows just how to keep me coming back for more. Verum is another unbelievable piece of this inimitable journey. This series as a whole is a definite must read, epitomizing tragic love, epic heartache, and profound agony in a way that is breathtaking.
