A Shattered Heart is the story of Kathleen “Kat” Darby who discovers that although you can run away, you can never escape the ghosts from your past.
Physically, Kat Darby walked away relatively unscathed from the tragic car accident on the night of her high school graduation. Emotionally, her scars run much deeper from the loss of two of her best friends and her longtime boyfriend, Dan. Unable to face the constant reminders of the person she thought she would love forever, Kat leaves for twelve months to study art in France before returning home to start her life again.
Life in Florida proves more difficult than Kat anticipated with remnants of the accident still lingering. The only solace she can find is in her love for art until she runs into Brian, the younger brother of her deceased former boyfriend. Finding they can lean on eachother, Kat and Brian find comfort in their emotional common bond. When an unexpected romance develops, Kat must decide if she is willing to face the ghosts from her past in order to love again.
Tiffany King has outdone herself with A Shattered Heart. This new addition to the Fractured Lives series continues the epic emotional journey through Kat’s eyes. A Shattered Heart is a gripping story of healing and hope that will break your heart and put it back together several times over before this book is through. Tiffany King’s writing absolutely shines, brimming with raw emotion and genuine characters that I couldn’t help but fall in love with. I adored the way Tiffany King broke the characters down, forcing them to recognize their own pain in one another and making them consider for the first time, what is was like to be on the other side of their tragedy. There is an intensity to this novel that made it utterly addictive, captivating me from start to finish. An overwhelming feeling of family gave A Shattered Heart a comforting familiarity that made me feel like a part of this couple’s story. Kat and Brian’s heart-wrenching journey definitely packs one powerful punch!
“Our shared tears drowned me, holding me under. Pushing me to the bottom of a dark abyss. My heart refused to beat normally – it laid in tatters in my chest. I knew I would not survive. How could I? I was now missing a vital organ.”
Tiffany King did an incredible job developing Kat’s character in this book. Kat is drowning under the emotional weight of her grief and guilt, something hard to understand unless you’ve experienced something similarly traumatic. I was amazed at how well A Shattered Heart managed to portray Kat’s complicated path to healing, delivering the sadness, fear, anger, and guilt that survivors of trauma are forced to face before they can move forward. Everything about Kat resonated deeply with me. Tiffany King has so expertly captured her tortured heart and haunted mind that I swear I could feel her story moving through me. Her pain became my own, binding me to this character and refusing to let me go. Brian was the perfect balance to Kat. While Kat refuses to remember the past and moments with her lost friends, Brian chooses to cherish those memories. Seeing his own grief and the vast difference in the way they’ve coped gave this story significant depth, while Brian’s patience and understanding made him one swoon-worthy book boyfriend!
“For a moment, the briefest of moments, I allowed myself to dwell on how good it felt to be surrounded so completely by another person again.”
The storyline in this book was undeniably beautiful. There was a lot of tough love in this book and it made me appreciate the authenticity of Kat’s journey even more. Tiffany King not only embraced the idea that sometimes we need a push to see that we’re standing in our own way, but she explored the various relationships crucial to healing. Kat and Brian’s connection was fierce and lent itself to majorly steamy moments, incredibly frustrating battles of will, and deeply poignant life lessons that made this story truly something special. Their easy banter and undeniable chemistry provided moments of laughter and light that balanced the devastating grief and exquisite pain of this heartfelt journey. I can’t wait to see what Tiffany King has in store next for this series (I need Zack’s story now!). A Shattered Heart is an absolute must read for anyone who’s experienced a heart heavy with grief and everyone who believes in the healing power of love.
