Title: Four Seconds To Lose
Author: K.A. Tucker
Series: Ten Tiny Breaths #3
Release Date: November 4, 2013
I believe you don’t have years, or months, or weeks to impact a person’s life. You have seconds. Seconds to win them over, and seconds to lose them.
Owning a strip club isn’t the fantasy most guys expect it to be. With long hours, a staff with enough issues to keep a psych ward in business, and the police regularly on his case, twenty-nine-year-old Cain is starting to second-guess his unspoken mission to save the women he employs. And then blond, brown-eyed Charlie Rourke walks through his door, and things get really complicated. Cain abides by a strict “no sleeping with his staff” rule. But being around Charlie challenges Cain’s self-control . . . and it’s been a long time since any woman has done that.
Twenty-two-year-old Charlie Rourke needs a lot of money, really fast, in order to vanish before it’s too late. Taking her clothes off for men makes her stomach curl, but Charlie tells herself that at least she’s putting her acting and dancing skills to good use. And though her fellow dancers seem eager to nab their sexy, sophisticated, and genuinely caring boss, she’s not interested. After all, Charlie Rourke doesn’t really exist—and the girl pretending to be her can’t get distracted by romance.
Unfortunately, Charlie soon discovers that developing feelings for Cain is inevitable, and that those feelings may not be unrequited—but losing him when he finds out what she’s involved with will be more painful than any other sentence awaiting her.
Just when I thought I was in love with this series, Four Seconds to Lose comes along and kicks it up to an absolute obsession. Like the previous books in this series, Four Seconds to Lose is wrought with heartbreak, angst, and intrigue, delivering a story that packs a powerful punch. K.A. Tucker has leveled me with Cain and Charlie’s story. Both of them had gone through so much, carrying scars that made them reluctant to love. From the moment they met there was a sizzling chemistry that was unavoidable. K.A. Tucker has certainly crafted a unique and intense connection between Charlie and Cain, resulting in an inimitable and unforgettable journey. I loved seeing some of the previous couples from the series throughout this book. Their presence gave Four Seconds to Lose a sense of familiarity that made me feel instantly connected to the story and wholly invested in Cain and Charlie’s happily ever after.
“You’re a lot of things, Charlie Rourke, but forgettable is not one of them, violet irises or not.”
Cain was everything I’d hoped he would be and so much more. This enigmatic man has been a mystery since the beginning, the motives behind his kindness and the way he does business as of yet undiscovered. K.A. Tucker stripped Cain bare and exposed his haunting past, making me feel for him in a way that was completely unexpected. His innate alpha male sensibilities mixed with his kind heart and loving soul made him a combination that was deliciously swoon-worthy. I loved watching his evolution over the course of this book as Charlie turned his world upside-down and exposed the damage within. I also adored unraveling Charlie. I loved the parallel between the fierce, funny, and caring Charlie and the broken, scared version that was being manipulated. Her past and the impact it had on her was riveting and I swear I held my breath each and every time she was forced into a dangerous situation. Her secrets gave this story an element of suspense that was absolutely addictive.
“You’re safe here and you can start fresh. Your slate is clean with me.”
K.A. Tucker has a true talent for balancing the emotions of her stories. Four Seconds To Lose was the total package, delivering a story with incredible emotional weight that was also funny, sweet, and exciting. The plot was filled with twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat while the inner workings of Penny’s was undoubtedly entertaining. I laughed at the banter between Ginger and well… everybody, Ben’s antics kept me grinning (and rolling my eyes), and Charlie’s performances set the pages of this book on fire. The connection between Cain and Charlie really felt like something special and it was easy to become invested in this great couple. From start to finish, K.A. Tucker had me under her spell, devouring her stunning imagery, vibrant characters, witty dialogue, and heart-wrenching emotions. Four Seconds To Lose is easily one of my favorite books in this series!
