Love is a circus
“Every day,” he says lowly, “I hold a person’s life in my hands. The circus is based one-hundred percent off trust. I give it all to someone, and they give it all to me.”
The best aerial technique won’t land 21-year-old Thora James her dream role in Amour—a sexy new acrobatic show on the Vegas strip. Thora knows she’s out of her element the second she meets Amour’s leading performer. Confident, charming and devilishly captivating, 26-year-old Nikolai Kotova lives up to his nickname as the “God of Russia.”
When Thora unknowingly walks into the crosshairs of Nikolai’s after-show, her audition process begins way too soon. Unprofessional. That’s what Nik calls their “non-existent” relationship. It’s not like Thora can avoid him. For one, they may be partners in the future–acrobatic partners, that is. But getting closer to Nik means diving deeper into sin city and into his dizzying world.
Thora wants to perform with him, but when someone like Nikolai attracts the spotlight wherever he goes—Thora fears that she’s destined to be just background to his spellbinding show.
I’ve wanted to read something by the duo that is Becca and Krista Ritchie for a while now, so on a time crunch, I figured that their standalone novel Amour Amour would be the perfect place to start. I wasn’t quite sure what to expect with a novel about the circus, but I decided to jump in and just experience the book, and I’m incredibly happy that I did!
“Who can explain the drum of their heart or the burst of their lungs? Give me that person. I need them because words fail my senses.”
Ironically, Thora stole the show and was the shining star for me. Her tenacity, strength, and bravery was so empowering. She refused to give up on her dream no matter what it costed her and I think it’s a very admirable characteristic to see in a heroine. I know for me, it’s certainly not one I see often. Her counterpart, Nikolai, was utter perfection. The way he pushed her, but never more than he knew she was capable of shoved her into the spotlight. He was protective and endearing, but never in an unrealistic nature. Everything he did or said felt so genuine and authentic to the character that these two authors created. This couple surely went through their ups and downs because of their first love – the circus – but something about them drew you in like a moth to the flame from the very beginning. That initial moment was a spark that lasted the entire novel. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen chemistry or the dynamic between two people the way it was conveyed with these two.
“Love – it has to come second.”
The thing that drew me in the most about Amour Amour was its pacing. In the beginning, I kept feeling like I was waiting for something big to happen. In fact, there were times I thought it was a little slow. However, as I progressed throughout the book, I realized how intentional and methodical this came across. As I got closer and closer to those final moments, I was able to reflect and realize what an amazing, uphill journey I had been a part of. The writing of Becca and Krista Ritchie is phenomenal and flawless. I never would have guessed that two people’s skills or words put this single book together. It felt effortless and the book flowed from beginning to end.
“And I realized, you are my Saturday nights. Being with you makes me come alive all over again.”
Amour Amour is a storyline that I have never come across, but one I’d definitely be interested in seeing more of. Everything from the Vegas atmosphere, to the circus, to the insane chemistry between these two characters is special and fun, yet endearing at the same time. If this book is any indication of what Becca and Krista Ritchie can do, I’m anxious to carve out time to read their other novels. You can consider me in a state of Amour Amour!
