Title – Bright Side
Author – Kim Holden
Publication Date – July 4, 2014
Series – Bright Side #1

Everyone has one.
Some are bigger than others.
And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you …
And some will end you.

Kate Sedgwick’s life has been anything but typical. She’s endured hardship and tragedy, but throughout it all she remains happy and optimistic (there’s a reason her best friend Gus calls her Bright Side). Kate is strong-willed, funny, smart, and musically gifted. She’s also never believed in love. So when Kate leaves San Diego to attend college in the small town of Grant, Minnesota, the last thing she expects is to fall in love with Keller Banks.

They both feel it.
But they each have a reason to fight it.
They each have a secret.

And when secrets are revealed,
Some will heal you …
And some will end you.

Bright Side 3

Every once in a while, I come across a book that strikes me so deeply, so profoundly that I’m left stunned speechless; that trying to dig into the depths of my soul to find words to describe it is futile. The words I use will never be meaningful enough to encompass just how special the novel is, and Bright Side by Kim Holden is one of these books for me. This book was simply put – everything; it was a novel to get lost in, lessons to absorb, and mantras to live by.

“Discovering something new is like magic. Music is out there to be heard and I am of the opinion that as many people as possible should hear it. All of it. Because music is powerful. It connects people.”

Kate is a character who has faced more adversity than any one person should have to in a life time. She is the epitome of positive thinking, sunshine, and all around goodness. I may not know her in real life, but I’m certainly a better person for simply reading words from her point of view. There are two leading men in Bright Side, and readers will come to love and appreciate both of them in completely different ways. Keller was sweet, almost hesitant, and a man who played by the rules more often than not. Gus was Kate’s best friend who quite literally could sing the lyrics to her soul when she forgot the words. Each gave her something and fulfilled pieces of her life in different ways that I could never pick a favorite. The way that these three characters complemented each other so seamlessly provided such an experience for me as a reader.

“I can’t do epic. It’s an adjective. I can be epic.”

While there is certainly an element of romance in Bright Side, this book is so much more. It will rip out your heart at times, causing you to go through a box of tissues, but it will also fill pieces of your soul. I often times felt like the author was creating wounds in my heart and soul, just so she could fill them with the beautiful words she would put to the paper. The storyline is one that you pulls you in, tears you to shreds, but somehow fulfills you in a way that not many authors’ words can.

“And consider laughter is like oxygen to me, I really needed it. I medicate with it. I found two people who make me laugh, like tears-in-my-eyes, almost-wet-my-pants laugh. Those are the kind of people I like to be around. And now I have two. Lucky me.”

I promised myself that I would not write a long review, because my words will never be able to do Bright Side justice. Kim Holden is an immensely talented writer with a gift for making her readers feel everything. The emotions she pours into her characters and the life she breathes into them makes the reader feel like these people are friends, not just personalities on a page. I’m not quite sure what provoked Holden to write this novel, but I know that I will look forward to everything she writes in the future. She didn’t just deliver a book, she did epic.

(This book deserves double, triple this)
