After his mother dies, rock star Ace White—lead singer of the red-hot band Wicked White—is done with the celebrity game. The phony people, the meaningless one-night stands: he doesn’t want any of it anymore. Quitting in the middle of a sold-out tour, Ace sets out to find some place—any place—where he can be alone.
Aspiring singer Iris Easton’s life has never been easy. First, her mother walked out on her when she was a kid. Now she’s buried in debt, weeks after losing her beloved grandmother. When a mysterious and sexy new guy moves in next door, Iris can’t help but be drawn to his soulful gaze. She can tell there’s something from his past haunting him—something he’s not telling her.
Just as Ace starts falling for Iris, the media go on a worldwide hunt to find the missing rocker. Will true love conquer all, or will the truth be the very thing that tears the couple apart?
Wicked White is the beginning of a new series for Michelle A. Valentine and this time she’s written a new twist on the rock star romance. Ace and Iris’ story is in no way typical, beginning with two losses that result in the most unlikely of meetings between our two main characters. Wicked White is the story of two people from seemingly different worlds finding their own epic love story and then fighting for it. If the swoon-worthy and sweet rocker wasn’t enough to win me over, the classic literary references and talk of epic romances certainly did. I loved the overall feeling of this story. Wicked White epitomizes that sensation of big dreams brewing in a small town and effectively captured the hope and despair of those classic, epic star-crossed romances.
“I don’t hate you.” He hesitates for a beat and then shakes his head. “I just need to stay away from you.”
Ace and Iris seemed to be moving in opposite directions for most of this story; Iris still chasing the dream she has yet to obtain while Ace abandons his in an effort to reshape it. Iris is a girl after my own heart, tough and independent with big dreams and not afraid of a little hard work. I would have liked to see a little more character growth with Iris, hoping to gain a deeper understanding of her motivations and vulnerabilities. Ace was an emotional mess that tugged on my heartstrings even when I really wanted to hate him. He developed as the story progressed, forcing him to figure out what it is he really wants. Together these two are explosive, whether that means scorching passion or crushing disappointment, Michelle A. Valentine has created a definitive chemistry between Ace and Iris.
“It’s like lightning strikes this beautiful woman in my arms as she sings to me without fear. The words of the song come out effortlessly, and her voice could rival any of the greatest female vocalists of all time. She’s that damn stunning.”
This story was sweet, steamy, and unexpected. Wicked White was a fresh take on rock star romance. The secrets and unspoken feelings certainly kept me engaged in this story, while the emotional weight of Iris and Ace’s personal journeys gripped my heart. I definitely felt some serious whiplash with this couple, their relationship constantly in a state of flux and the timing never right. After a while I really just wanted them to work it out one way or another. I adored the way that both Iris and Ace worshipped music. This common love broke the initial ice between them and ultimately forged the path for their relationship. The contrast between Ace’s life on tour with his life with Iris created a fascinating dynamic that I enjoyed exploring in this book. This was a fun, fresh read with plenty of steam. I’m looking forward to seeing where Michelle A. Valentine plans on taking this series.
