Beautiful Disaster

Synopsis

The new Abby Abernathy is a good girl. She doesn’t drink or swear, and she has the appropriate number of cardigans in her wardrobe. Abby believes she has enough distance from the darkness of her past, but when she arrives at college with her best friend, her path to a new beginning is quickly challenged by Eastern University’s Walking One-Night Stand.

Travis Maddox, lean, cut, and covered in tattoos, is exactly what Abby needs—and wants—to avoid. He spends his nights winning money in a floating fight ring, and his days as the ultimate college campus charmer. Intrigued by Abby’s resistance to his appeal, Travis tricks her into his daily life with a simple bet. If he loses, he must remain abstinent for a month. If Abby loses, she must live in Travis’s apartment for the same amount of time. Either way, Travis has no idea that he has met his match.

Beautiful Disaster 3

Review

This is one of those books that will undoubtedly stay with me for a while. Beautiful Disaster is the first that I have come across by Jamie McGuire, and I can already tell that it certainly won’t be the last. These characters so strongly exhibit the insecure, unsure, and lost emotions of a new adult, which explains how McGuire is known as a trailblazer of the genre. There was just something about Beautiful Disaster as a whole that sucked me in, kept me interested, and left me unable to stop turning the pages.

“You need to walk away, Pidge. God knows I can’t walk away from you.”

Travis was one of those guys that has all the characteristics I love in a guy; he is fierce, protective, and utterly determined. He was a bad boy, but deep down, readers could see that he wanted to change and be good enough for the girl who showed him his worth. Although I will admit that he got a little crazy at times, I could absolutely see how much he adored and came to love Abby. As for her, I seriously LOVED the mysterious element that surrounded her! I liked that she had a history but never let herself be dictated by it. That one character trait made her so ridiculously relatable because it’s something I live my life by. She strives to be stronger instead of losing herself, and I adore a strong female character.

“Fighting, laughing, loving, or crying, if it was with him, I was where I wanted to be.”

I think the most special thing for me was that the relationship began as a friendship and then developed into more. So many books these days present the relationship as act first, think later. However, Abby and Travis felt completely different and I think it’s because of those initial moments. Their banter and acts of flirting weren’t always about the expectation of sex, and it helped provide for a gradual build-up until they finally admitted their feelings and it all exploded in the most beautiful of ways.

“Then you have nothing to be afraid of. We’re forever.”

Beautiful Disaster is a short, quick read that will ultimately give you tunnel vision. I had the hardest time pausing to do anything remotely productive. These two characters are unforgettable, and Jamie McGuire is a magnificent writer. I am truly excited to read more from her in the future!
