From #1 New York Times bestselling author Abbi Glines comes the next new adult novel in the Rosemary Beach series, in which we meet Mase, a Texas heartthrob first introduced in Take a Chance who comes to Rosemary Beach to stir things up.
I had an urge to fix all her problems. Which was stupid. She was doing fine without me. But something about those big eyes…
Mase Colt-Manning has always preferred his humble life as a Texas rancher to his birthright as the son of a legendary rock star. In fact, he rarely visits his father’s rarefied world in Rosemary Beach, especially if it means bunking at his vile half-sister Nan’s house—until one visit leads to a chance encounter with a young, gorgeous house maid who awakens him with her off-key but spirited imitation of a country music star…
Reese Ellis finally has her freedom. After escaping a lifetime of abuse from her parents and classmates for an undiagnosed learning disorder, she seizes the opportunity to be a house maid to some of the richest families in Rosemary Beach. But her job is in jeopardy when she causes an accident at the home of her most important client, Nan Dillon. When a hot, half-naked stranger with a cowboy’s swagger comes to her rescue, she’s intrigued—then afraid once he shows his own interest. Reese has never met a trustworthy man in her life. Will Mase be any different?
Whenever I pick up another book in the Rosemary Beach series, I think that it can’t possibly top the previous books. I really need to stop thinking that because Abbi Glines out does herself every single time. While the rest of the books are wonderful romantic tales, When I’m Gone became about something so much more. The writing is impeccable and the characters are ones that you just can’t help but fall in love with.
“She deserved a fairy-tale life, but she had lived through hell instead.”
We had previously met Mase Manning and I knew that there was something about him that I would find irresistible based purely on the interactions he had with his sister, Harlow. What I never expected to find was this patient, fiercely protective, steadfast man with a soft core. I loved every single facet of his personality, especially his martyrdom and the willingness he had to admit defeat by love. He took on the weight of other people’s problems and it made me feel incredibly close to him. I think all girls secretly want the guy who would drop everything for them, and Mase proved to be that fantasy come true.
“I’m going to wash it all away. I swear to God, I am, Reese. One day, all you will see or remember is me and what we feel like together. I swear.”
Reese was such a complex character who needed so much tender, love, and care. She was so different than the other characters we have come across because of the demons she hides in her closet. She never used them as an excuse to keep her down, and she battled every day just to get past them. Reese needed someone to see past her scars and insecurities, but still foster the independence she had acquired, which is why Mase was the perfect counterpart for her. She became his sweet spot, while he became her strength, and together they created a team.
“I wondered what that must feel like. To have someone speak to you that way and mean it. To know he wasn’t going to hurt you.”
When I’m Gone didn’t feel like just another book in the series for me. Glines wrote this installment as more of a suspense than the previous books by keeping Reese’s past a mystery. Though we can surmise what has happened by morsels of information, we haven’t got the full story yet. However, it keeps the reader intrigued and turning the pages to get to the bottom of her story, particularly with the way that the author chose to end things. I’m already salivating for the next book in Mase and Reese’s story, and I’ve only just finished.
“Thank you for wanting me.”
With the issues discussed and dealt with in When I’m Gone, the book held a greater purpose than just a love story. It affects readers on a deeper level, which shows that even with Glines’ success, she is continuing to dig deep and strive for growth in her writing. I’m anxious to see where else she could possibly take us with this series. If there is one thing I know for certain, it’s that if Rosemary Beach were a place filled with the characters from these novels, I wouldn’t for a second hesitate to pick up and move there!

Abbi Glines is a #1 New York Times, USA Today, and Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Rosemary Beach, Sea Breeze, Vincent Boys, and Existence series. She has a new YA series coming out in the fall of 2015 titled The Field Party Series . She never cooks unless baking during the Christmas holiday counts. She believes in ghosts and has a habit of asking people if their house is haunted before she goes in it. She drinks afternoon tea because she wants to be British but alas she was born in Alabama. When asked how many books she has written she has to stop and count on her fingers. When she’s not locked away writing, she is reading, shopping (major shoe and purse addiction), sneaking off to the movies alone, and listening to the drama in her teenagers lives while making mental notes on the good stuff to use later. Don’t judge.
