Come to Me Quietly

Synopsis

Aleena Moore is content with her life. She has goals and dreams and an easy smile. She also has a secret she holds locked inside.

Jared Holt believes he doesn’t deserve to love or be loved. He destroys everything he touches. Haunted by the mistake that shattered his life, he’s fled from the memory of that pain.

Jared doesn’t know why he’s compelled to return, but finds himself drawn back to the place where it all began. The exact place where it ended. When he runs into his childhood best friend, Aleena’s older brother Christopher, he agrees to share Christopher and Aleena’s apartment while he looks for a place of his own.

Aleena is no longer the little girl Jared remembers from his past and evokes feelings in him he never wanted to feel again. Terrified of destroying her, he fights to keep her away. But her touch is something he can’t resist—the touch that sealed his fate.

Their pasts are intertwined and their futures uncertain. The only truths they know are the secrets they whisper in the night.

Review

Having read a novella by this author before, I knew going in that I would enjoy her writing style. However, Come to Me Quietly absolutely floored me. I honestly had no idea how consuming her words would become or how emotionally invested I would find myself. Everything about Come to Me Quietly is strong, the characters, the emotions, the devastation. Each aspect of this story is potent and the resulting combination is a stunning hurricane of words that effortlessly transports the reader into A.L. Jackson’s world. It has been a long time since I’ve felt this much emotion while reading a book but this story just touched me in a profound way. The dark and light of this journey clashed in an unexpected battle that simultaneously crushed my heart and stole it away.

“You create and I destroy.”

Jared and Aly are two of the most complex and well-developed characters I’ve ever read. Their personalities and behaviors so clearly reflected their discordant personal journeys in life, yet the underlying connection between them was insurmountable. Even when A.L. Jackson had me believing that Jared was far too broken for Aly, that imaginary thread lingered, holding onto the hope that love might actually conquer all. It wasn’t just their emotional connection that had me hooked. A.L. Jackson made sure their physical connection sizzled too. I swear there were times when I could feel the charge in the air created merely by their proximity to one another. I felt bad for anyone stuck in the room with these two because I was sure that the third wheel would eventually burst into flames from all the heated glances swirling around them.

“I was different with him. Better and worse, too confident and incredibly naïve. Jared made me desire things I’d never desired before. It confused me, left me both vacant and filled. Almost complete.”

To say that Jared took me by surprise would be a gross understatement. I adored Aly immediately and I liked Jared well enough at the beginning, but I could never have guessed that I would become absolutely addicted to his darkness. A.L. Jackson unquestionably put a lot of heart and soul into this character. Jared was intense and raw and had been fractured one too many times. He was on the edge and it would have been so easy for him to fall but A.L. ensured his permanent place in my heart with his profound words and shattering inner dialogue. The contrast between his moments of perfect tenderness with Aly to his self-destructive tendencies was poetic, painting a complicated and beautiful picture of a very haunted young man whose very soul was tortured and unsure.

“There are just some boys who are so broken they can never be tamed, and in the end, they just end up breaking you.”

A.L. Jackson has earned herself the no-questions-asked one-click from me with this book. Come to Me Quietly is an exquisite journey that will definitely stay with you long after the pages of this book have been closed. A.L. Jackson has a voice that is poetic and thoughtful and incredibly unique. Her writing effortlessly provokes a myriad of emotions, allowing the reader to simply lose themselves amongst the pages of her book. Her characters have personality, depth, and purpose, ensuring my investment in them from the start. With Come to Me Quietly, A.L. Jackson has created an experience that is entirely human and absolutely inimitable. I know Aly and Jared’s journey is only just beginning, so I’m readying myself for whatever A.L. has in store for this couple next. For anyone who loves angst and overcoming, this book is a MUST read.
