Title: Becoming His
Author: Mariah Dietz
Series: His, #1
Release Date: December 1, 2014
Sometimes life’s unforeseen paths lead us to discovering sides of ourselves we never knew existed.
Ace Bosse has always found solace at home, but when she returns for the summer from college she builds an unexpected relationship with the reckless Max Miller.
Three years ago, Max left for Alaska to find what he thought he’d lost, but now he realizes just how much he left behind.
Max teaches Ace that sometimes a little crazy is exactly what life needs while learning that some chances are worth taking, regardless of the risks.
But how do you know when you’ve met the right person? And will they be prepared to experience one of life’s biggest obstacles?
Falling in love isn’t easy, but holding on to it is where the real challenge lies.
Becoming His is new adult perfection. I’m completely addicted to Ace, Max, and the rest of the vibrant characters that fill the pages of this book with so much life and love. I’m not sure I’ve ever met a group of characters that felt more like family. They belonged together, plain and simple. Mariah Dietz knows what it means to be a piece of a whole and she celebrates the importance of that with these beautiful characters. Before I even knew what was happening, Becoming His had consumed me. I was lost completely to the youthful sense of invincibility and the hesitant reality of facing an uncertain future. As I read, I lived this book. Each page I devoured resonated in the deepest parts of my soul as I re-lived the emotional rollercoaster that is college, venturing out on your own, and redefining family. Mariah not only captures the heart of the new adult genre with Becoming His, she polishes and perfects it.
“No, crazy and I haven’t really been introduced. I’ve met stupid a couple of times.”
Ace is your best friend, your sister, and the girl next door. She is a college girl from head to toe; complete with insecurities, a need to feel cherished, and a fierce loyalty that stands the test of time. Max has the slightly mysterious, brooding and delicious thing going on. It took no time at all for me to be in complete lust with him. I adored the way he took his time with Ace, never taking her for granted or making her feel like one in an endless parade of women (at least not intentionally). Mariah Dietz lit a fire with these two that blazes red-hot. The connection she generated between Ace and Max is immediate and strong. The sparks they emit dance across each page of this book with a charming and sexy surety that demands to be experienced. Despite the risks involved with writing so many characters and couples into a story, Mariah expertly crafted each secondary character so it was impossible not to fall completely in love with them. By the time the book was over, I wanted 30 more books about each and every one of them.
“My pride screams at me to go back and let him have it, but a small voice urges me on, reminding me that this isn’t a battle worth fighting. You fight to keep things you want, things that you believe in, and neither of those apply.”
I’m wondering where Mariah Dietz has been all my life because her writing exemplifies everything I adore about this heartfelt genre. This book is overflowing with genuine emotion, teeming with the uncertainty and anxiety that is par for the course for a twenty-something in college. I was enchanted by the depth of the characters and invested in their personal growth and developing relationships. I felt for them, connected with them, and found myself thinking about them long after the book was finished. Mariah’s voice exudes youth and epitomizes the internal struggles of venturing out on your own for the first time. It is obvious that she feels her characters deeply and her passion and love for them shines off of every page. I am beyond anxious to find out what happens next with this incredible family. Like a book ninja, Becoming His snuck up on me, strategically surrounding my heart before swiftly taking me down completely. This is a MUST READ new adult gem.
As soon as I finished this book, I jumped online to thank a friend who introduced me to the author. Becoming His by Mariah Dietz was one filled with angst, love, family, and everything I envision the New Adult genre to be. The characters introduced were ones I couldn’t get enough of, the storyline one that provoked honest to goodness emotions within me, and a world that I simply salivated to get back to whenever I had to stop reading. It was simply stated, a breath of fresh air!
“I’ve been in like plenty of times; I’ve even been in love with the idea of being in love. But big gesture, life-sacrificing, stalking, jealous, craving, crazy kind of love…no.”
There was something about every single main character introduced that I really took a liking to. I related to each of them in different ways and admired them for other traits. For a long time, Ace is ruled by her fears. She has so many of them that it’s only in those instances of being crazy that we get to see the carefree, unbridled spirit she possesses. She’s an avid lover of those she surrounds herself with, but especially her family. I can’t even describe how much I loved that they were truly her home base. She could be a bit immature at times, but it just seemed natural to her character. One of the things I appreciated the most was the fact that she was searching for what she was meant to do, but never felt pressured by everyone around her to choose. She just knew that she would get there one day.
“I want to believe every word he’s telling me and pretend that none of this ever happened, but doubt is an ugly, bitter fog that is sometimes impenetrable.”
Max is her next door neighbor who had been gone for quite some time due to personal reasons. He has quite the reputation, but readers quickly learn that not everything is as it seems. He is cocky, compassionate, and incredibly intuitive. He had his own fears and while they created some issues, he never really let them rule his life. The chemistry between these two personas was always at full throttle. I could feel flutters in my stomach and palpitations in my heart whenever they were together. Dietz does an extraordinary job building up the sexual tension and then creating an utter explosion when things together. She makes you fall in love with the idea of them being together, to the point that I muttered the thought aloud more than once. There was something about the two of them that left you feeling like pieces of their puzzles finally clicked together where they belonged.
“There are going to be times when the people you love and that love you are going to disappoint you, and it hurts. And sometimes that hurt makes you question the reality of it all.”
I am so happy that I took a chance on Becoming His by Mariah Dietz! The characters were attempting to find their way when all they sometimes felt was lost, and I appreciated the exploration into the fact that not everyone has the same life path ahead of them. It embodied what a New Adult novel should be through the trials experienced and feelings explored. There weren’t some huge plot twists or spectacular events I could never see coming. However, the book just flowed organically and I ended up loving it just for what it was. I am now incredibly anxious and curious to see where their stories take us, particularly with how Becoming His ended. All I know for certain is that Dietz has a promising future in writing and I intend to be there for the journey!
