When Miss Man-Eater…
Raquel Adams is in desperate need of a media makeover. Her already floundering reputation is made worse by her recent antics, and she doesn’t seem to care. Raquel lives life on her own terms and doesn’t answer to anyone, least of all Clayton Cox, the guy charged with making her a media darling. His take charge attitude is a problem for strong-willed Raquel, but she can’t deny the attraction she feels toward him.
Meets America’s spin doctor…
Clayton Cox is the boss, and damn good at his job. He’s hired to improve your reputation and does so by swooping in, saving the day, and moving onto the next one. But he can’t move one from his newest client. Raquel is maddening, and gorgeous enough to make him forget his rule of never getting involved with a client. But Clayton can’t forget what happened the last time he mixed business with pleasure.
All’s fair in love and war.
Raquel wants Clayton, and nothing is going to stand in her way, not even Clayton himself. He doesn’t know what hit him, and soon finds himself juggling between having to improve her reputation and feign off her advances. But Clayton’s determined to show Raquel who’s in charge at any cost, even if that means thwarting her seduction efforts. Will Miss Man-Eater change or ways? Or will Clayton become the latest victim entangled in her web?
Miss Man-Eater has a very different vibe than the first book in the series. This book was Raquel’s from start to finish. Her story was every bit as spunky and honest as Raquel is. Marie Garner made us fall for Raquel instantly. She opened the story in a way that allowed an immediate connection to this character. I felt for her from the moment the book began and that feeling carried throughout the story. After Raquel’s Hollywood reputation leads her into the office of spin-doctor extraordinaire, Clayton, who isn’t the type to walk on eggshells, the drama between them unfolds. As they attempt to curb the negativity in the media surrounding Miss Man-Eater, they’re blindsided by the lust, jealousy, and insecurities that build between them, making for one electric story.
“Hollywood is a fickle bunch. They either love you or hate you, and often, they do both simultaneously.”
Marie Garner gave Raquel’s character depth and substance that ensured my investment in her happily ever after. Clayton’s no-bullshit attitude made him the perfect match for the feisty Raquel. They butted heads and verbally sparred, resulting in an intense friction between them that refused to go away. This story packed some serious heat and Marie Garner made sure her readers were feeling it. Being privy to each other’s vulnerabilities gave their relationship an unexpected layer that proved to be vital to their ability to deal with the drama of their lives. The evolution of their relationship was perfectly infuriating, unapologetic and steamy and I enjoyed every second of watching Clayton and Raquel reconcile their feelings.
“Life hurts and love’s a bitch sometimes, but the important thing is to make sure you keep holding on to those who matter to you because they’re the only ones who matter when it’s all said and done.”
The surprising part of this story for me was the secondary characters. I fell in love with Raquel’s sister, Ainsley and Clayton’s friend, Spencer. These two had a connection that really had me curious and they added another dimension to the story. Plus, seeing Ainsley with Raquel really gave us a whole new side of Raquel to appreciate and I felt like the character was somehow made more complete. Marie Garner’s writing continues to grow with each new project and I enjoyed getting to know another one of the Misses. Unlike the first book, which was more Hollywood-focused, Miss Man-Eater focuses more on life away from set and so we see less of the girls as actresses and more of them as normal people. I loved seeing more of Brea and I’m excited to see more of Raquel and Clayton in the future when they’re more settled. Full of unexpected connections and emotions, Miss Man-Eater was a quick read and a fun addition to this series!
“Let’s play truth or shot,” Raquel told Clare, Brea, and Ainsley one night while they all sat around her living room. She’d declared a girl’s night, because she missed her friends and wanted to reconnect with them. Her and Clayton had been going strong for the last two weeks so she didn’t have time to see Brea and Clare unless they were filming or had an occasional lunch date.
“We can’t have alcohol,” Ainsley rubbed her stomach, the pregnancy evident. Raquel got excited every time she thought of her niece or nephew, and couldn’t wait to spoil the baby.
Brea grabbed some juice, using that in place of the tequila Clare and Raquel would be drinking.
“Fine,” Ainsley waved her off. “Who’s going first?”
“You,” Raquel quipped, “Since you’re so eager to get the game going.”
Ainsley rolled her eyes, but gestured toward the shot glasses so they would fill them.
“Okay, we each get a question, and you can only take one shot.”
“I’ll go first,” Clare volunteered. “Have you and Spencer done anything sexually?”
“No,” Ainsley bit her lip nervously, sensing where the questions were heading.”
“Do you want to get together with Spencer?” Brea asked. Ainsley didn’t answer, she simply drowned the shot of apple juice like the hardcore drinker she was.
“Now we’re getting somewhere,” Raquel rubbed her hands together, going in for the kill. “Are you in love with Spencer?”
“Yes,” she nodded, giving nothing else away.
