Title: Stone Walls
Author: A.M. Madden
Series: True Heroes #1
Release Date: March 3, 2015
Benjamin Stone has an unrealistic determination to rid the streets of New York from any and all drug dealing scum. That determination quickly moves him and his partner, Rob Withers, up the ranks to Senior Narcotics Agents within their precinct. A new case assisting the FBI has Ben facing the ghosts of his past. Those same ghosts are the very reason he moved to New York to become a cop.
Ella Parker is bright, beautiful, kind, and severely damaged as a result of one tragic night in her past. Having lived an idealistic life, that horrific night sent her pretty castle of cards crumbling down. Forced to start over, she leans on her best friend, Andrea Hensen, to help her move on. With Andrea’s help, Ella quickly settles into her new life in New York City. It’s a safe and comfortable existence, albeit very boring.
Their paths may have never crossed, if it hadn’t been for their meddling best friends. Rob and Andrea believe that Ben and Ella are soul mates that were meant to be together, a perfect match. There’s one slight problem. Ben and Ella want no part of this matchmaking scheme. Funny thing about fate, it’s inevitable.
Or is it?
Can a truth cause the possibility of a happily ever after to crash and burn? Ben and Ella learn that sometimes truth isn’t the best answer. Sometimes ignorance is most definitely bliss.
A.M. Madden has broken beyond her rockstar ways and brought us one super hot cop in Ben Stone. I was excited for this new project, knowing how well A.M. can craft a book boyfriend. Ben Stone took me by complete surprise and had me hooked from the start. Once I got into the story, I couldn’t stop reading. Stone Walls had more twists, turns, and unexpected connections than I could have imagined and A.M. kept me on the edge of my seat with Ella and Ben’s story. This book is filled with loveable characters that share both fun, flirtatious moments and heartwarming emotional connections. I adore the world A.M. Madden has created in Stone Walls and I’m hoping this will not be the last we see of these characters.
“When I’m not near you, you never cross my mind. When I am near you, you take over my every thought.”
A.M. Madden has a knack for building fascinating characters with significant pasts and strong personal connections. As I read Stone Walls, it was like looking in on a family. The fantastic friendships and work relationships really shined throughout this story. Making it obvious that these characters were willing to make any sacrifice for one another. Ben Stone was sexy and protective with an undeniable sweet side. He is an excellent addition to the ranks of uniformed BBFs and I loved watching Ella break down his hard exterior. Ella, on the other hand, is a fighter and that had me connecting with her instantly. She was feisty and fierce, made stronger by the things she’d experienced. She is one kick-ass heroine and even when she was breaking down, her raw emotions never felt like a weakness, they just felt real.
“Tell me that kiss was a huge mistake that never should have happened. Say it so I can move on, so I can forget the day I ever met you.”
I enjoyed the plot of Stone Walls. I was easily lost in the suspense and found myself trying to unravel the histories and surprise connections that colored this story. Seeing how both the pasts and presents of these characters entwined added to the emotional aspect of the story. Each action and every discovered truth held more weight as it was carefully tied to more than one aspect of the story. The pacing of the story was smooth and quick, pulling me along until I was sure of Ella and Ben’s fate. A.M. Madden’s writing continues to grow with each new book she writes and Stone Walls was certainly no exception. Her character development, plot mapping, and injection of emotion are as impressive as always, putting me under her well-written spell.
