If you ask the confident and snarky skater girl, and she’s in the mood to share, she’ll tell you her name is Cat. She might even tell you that she’s hooked on graffiti, 80s movies, and having fun—the riskier the better. Cat will share a good time with you, but she won’t ever trust you enough to share her heart. It’s protected by secrets and she’d like to keep it that way.
Cat knows one thing for certain: Love isn’t really her thing.
If you ask the confident and rich pretty boy, he might tell you his name is Huck. He might even tell you he loves a challenge and is used to getting his way. He won’t tell you that his life is a mess because he risked his heart by trusting the wrong girl. Huck is ready for a change, he just wasn’t ready to get hooked on someone like Cat.
Huck knows one thing for certain: Love hasn’t done him any favors, but Cat just might be worth the risk.
Cat and Huck think a one-night stand seems harmless, but when all the little secrets they didn’t share turn out to be toxic truths, they realize how easily a one-night stand (or a few) could ruin everything.
The thing is, you can be ruined in more than one way. Once you’re HOOKED, what wouldn’t you risk for the chance at more?
I know it will sound so cliché, but I was completely hooked on Christine Manzari’s novel, Hooked. The characters were incredibly well developed and I absolutely loved the story line. It proved to not only be a romance, but a heartwarming tale of a woman’s journey to finding true strength and learning what it means to love someone.
“He could ruin me in so many ways and not just my career. I feared he may have already ruined a piece of my heart.”
One of the things I really appreciated about Hooked was the characters’ strong personalities, especially during those times we really got to see the opposing traits. At work, Cat was a vicious workaholic who knew she was good at her job. She was ferocious and confident and screamed strength. However, outside of the office we got to see a whole different story. Though she was still this sassy, independent heroine, we saw chinks in her armor; vulnerabilities that forced her to keep people out. The way that those defenses were broken down felt unique and special, and definitely provided for an emotional ride. I also completely adored Huck. He was persistent and steadfast in what he wanted. Though he could be temperamental, he never wavered or got scared because of his developing feelings for Cat. There was something about that dedication that just filled me up. It’s usually the guy who runs from commitment so I enjoyed seeing the tables turned in their story. However, he wasn’t without his faults especially given the way he had been hurt in the past.
“It was like we were one organism, one body, working together to birth an idea. It was creation. Expression.”
When Cat and Huck were together, there was a constant nagging in your brain rooting for them. The way that they complemented each other, despite their previous misgivings, was fun to watch unfold. I also seriously loved Cat’s best friend, Jay. He is a personality in and of himself in this book! The way he rooted for and defended her was beyond special, but what put it over the top was the way he could evaluate what was best for her even if she didn’t know it. She trusted him implicitly and he never took advantage of it, but walked a delicate line. Everyone should have a best friend like that.
“You’ve made me fight for you every step of the way and guess what? I’m still here. I’m still fighting.”
Even if you could guess at the destination, Hooked is one of those books you read for the journey. I definitely laughed and cried, and a gamut of emotions in between. Overall, I enjoyed the book tremendously. Even though it is considered a romance, I was so invested in what was happening outside of their relationship with Cat’s mom. She was forced to accept a full turn in her world and really had to grow beyond comprehension in such a short amount of time; a journey of acceptance, self-discovery, and love. The pages will leave you wanting more and more from these characters, and I can’t wait to see what Christine Manzari comes up with next!

The first thing Christine does when she’s getting ready to read a book is to crack the spine in at least five places. She wholeheartedly believes there is no place as comfy as the pages of a well-worn book. She’s addicted to buying books, reading books, and writing books. Books, books, books. She also has a weakness for adventure, inappropriate humor, and coke (the caffeine-laden bubbly kind). Christine is from Forest Hill, Maryland where she lives with her husband, three kids, and her library of ugly spine books.
