Happenstance

Synopsis

Be careful what you wish for. You just might get it all.

Now that Erin has learned the truth about the girls who tortured her, and about the boy she loves, she finds her time before graduation dwindling at an alarming and exciting pace. What used to be summer break was now a countdown to her final days in Blackwell. Her parents, Sam and Julianne struggle with the fear that just when they’ve found Erin, they must let her go, and the tension is higher than it’s been since Erin discovered who she really was.

Finally with the girl he’s loved since childhood, Weston grows more desperate as the summer days pass. He and Erin will go to separate colleges. His biggest fear is that this means they’ll go their separate ways. Plagued with making the best of the time he has left with Erin, and finding a way to make it last, Weston finds himself in a different state of mind hourly. He is just beginning to realize that hope is like quicksand. The harder Weston struggles, the faster Erin sinks.

Happenstance 3

Review

I can’t believe that the Happenstance trilogy by Jamie McGuire is now over with the release of the third installment. These characters left a permanent mark on my heart and the story they told touched me deep into my core. I really adored delving into this world and I am definitely hoping for some future bonus scenes! It’s one of those books where I’m not sure if I should be happy I got to experience Erin and Weston’s story, or sad that it is all over.

“You’ve always been the plan. It’ll always be you.”

Happenstance 3 takes place over a greater period of time than the previous two books so I felt like we got a lot more of the ups and downs in the growth process with Erin and Weston. That being said, I pretty much loved every moment of it. Erin stuck to her dreams and goals, no matter what that meant. She had a good enough head on her shoulders to not throw it away on a whim, or for a boy, and it made me feel like she stayed true to her character. As someone who used education to escape a bad life, I was proud that she wasn’t giving up those dreams, even if so much in her life had changed. It endeared me to her and allowed me to know that she would become an even stronger woman for it.

“Some people need at least one person to be nice to them – even if it’s just once.”

I developed such a love/hate relationship with Weston in this volume, to be honest. He got to be so wishy-washy, not in his feelings, but in his faith of their relationship. It was really hard for me to see this strong, bold, and confident guy crumble in a way. He began to question everything which resulted in a whole lot of unnecessary anger. Weston became a man with the best of intentions, but not always the best follow through. However, those moments of epiphany and clear thinking redeemed him. When things were good, they were great and I loved seeing those instances, like the prom set-up.

“I got a glimpse of our forever, and it’s kind of amazing.”

Jamie McGuire takes a personal subject to all of us and touches our soul with the message. Bullying is unacceptable, and it’s important to stand up for what YOU believe in, not follow a herd blindly. It’s a message I think we all need to be reminded of and the way that it is weaved into the entire Happenstance trilogy was something quite special. I was happy to see how Erin and Weston’s story ended, which could even be considered a beginning. Anything else would have seemed rushed and not realistic to these characters. The last line is, without a doubt, one of my absolute favorite from the series. While a part of me wishes Erin and Weston’s story could go on, my imagination is running wild with possibilities. There was just something about this book, and the whole series, that will leave a mark permanently etched in my heart.
