When Lena Bellows suspects her husband of cheating it rocks her world, but also sends her life into a tailspin seven years in the making. Decisions must be made, plans need to be set in place, but she can’t do it alone.
Private investigator Preston Reid was hired to prove Lena’s husband was being unfaithful, but she never expected the instantaneous and unrelenting attraction she felt upon meeting him.
She’ll need to rely on Preston to do his job without compromising her future, but they will both fight their constant and all-encompassing desire to be with each other.
Only one thing is clear: No one’s affairs are private anymore.
**This is the first volume in a multi-volume serial. Readers should not expect a resolution at the end of this publication. It is intended for mature readers. It is 28,000+ words.
Private Affairs is a departure from Anie Michaels’ normal storylines. While this story begins with the emotional devastation I’ve come to love from Anie, things heat up in this story in a new and exciting way. Our female lead, Lena, is about to have her world turned upside down and as events unfold, Anie had me twitching to see how this would all play out. As Lena’s marriage is falling apart, she hires Preston to do a little digging for her and she gets way more than she bargained for. This story had me hooked from the beginning, completely intrigued by the chemistry between the characters from the moment they met.
“Well then,” Sam said with resolution in her voice. “We’d better get a rental car, some black turtlenecks and ski masks, and brush up on our stake-out skills.”
Preston is just… yum. He is alpha and passionate and so very much the opposite of Derrek, who Anie had me wanting to punch in the face. I loved the contrast of these two men in Lena’s life. Seeing them side-by-side gave this story that added electricity. Sam is a fabulous friend, providing the necessary support and voicing her outrage at all the right times. I loved her willingness to do absolutely anything for Lena. Their hilarious antics had me grinning. Their friendship really grounded Lena as a character and helped give her feel more genuine. Plus, their relationship revealed another side of Lena’s personality, demonstrating the depth and complexity Anie Michaels has designed in this character.
“I don’t care what some stupid piece of paper says, Lena, you’ve been mine since the very first time I saw you walk into that bar.”
Private Affairs had me riding the full spectrum of emotion. My heart ached for Lena and it beat wildly at the prospect of what Preston could bring into her life. I was simultaneously thrilled at the events unfolding and nervous of the risks Lena was taking. Serials are difficult to get just right but Anie nailed it. It’s a lot of emotion, character history, and storyline to squeeze into a small number of pages. Along with successfully telling it’s portion of the overall story, each novella has to feel like a story of it’s own. Anie Michaels had me addicted to this story and she certainly left me dangling on the hook at the end, desperate for the next installment in Lena and Preston’s story.
When asked if I wanted to be a part of a surprise release for the fans, I was really excited. Because of that, I had no real idea what to expect from Private Affairs by Anie Michaels, but man oh man, I was blown away. This is the first book in a serial, but don’t let that deter you. I am, in no way whatsoever, a fan of serials; I tend to avoid them at all costs in fact. However, I would gladly read Private Affairs over again knowing that I’d have a little bit of a torturous wait ahead of me.
“Lena, there are many things I need you for. The list is long, involved, and dirty. But tonight, I need you for professional reasons.”
This first volume introduces us to a wife, Lena, who discovers that she is in a loveless marriage. From the moment that I began reading her point of view, there was something about her that I so strongly resonated with. There were several times that she spoke and I honestly thought Michaels reached into my soul and verbalized the words I’ve never been able to truly say. In fact, I’d venture to say that some of those feelings could be felt by most married couples at one time or another. I liked that she held on until she realized there was nothing to hold on to, and then she pulled up her big girl pants and survived. She never truly broke down, even in the face of certain events, and I really loved that strength. In attempting to prove her husband’s lack of desire to hold their marriage together outside a public arena, Lena meets Preston. He is sly and one of those manly men you instantly swoon for. He exuded confidence and intrigue. There was something about him that always left you wanting more, but in a good way. Whenever these two got together, I could feel the sizzle and heat through the words on the page. Their chemistry was off the charts and every ounce of sexual tension that oozed from their relationship hit every single sweet spot of mine!
“We wouldn’t have an always. We had a ‘right this instant,’ and it was closely followed with a ‘this is so terribly wrong.’ I couldn’t help but feel like it was the best wrong I’d ever had.”
Now that part one is over, and left on an incredibly juicy spot, I’m drooling to get volume two! I want more of that hotness, more of the sassiness, and just plain more. These characters were utter perfection with a story line that got me hook, line, and sinker. If you’re looking for a quick afternoon read that you can get lost in, with a little bit of steam, definitely pick up Private Affairs by Anie Michaels!
