Review

I really do think that J.C. Reed can write a romantic suspense novel with the best of them. Whenever I pick up one of her books, I’m hooked and on the edge of my seat from beginning to the very end. The Lover’s Promise was, as the series title implies, no exception to this experience. I could not put it down – even through being sick as a dog; all I wanted to do was read and delve deeper into this mystery!

“It was hard to resist a bad boy who might be good for my body but not for my heart.”

We’re brought back into the immediate throw of things where Brooke has left Jett due to witnessing him kissing Tiffany. The aggressive and passionate way with which things are dealt leaves the reader feeling on edge the entire time. I wanted so many answers and was only left with more and more questions. While normally this would drive me crazy, I actually think Reed does it with such finesse because of the little hints she does supply the reader with. I seriously love Brooke! Even in the heat of the moment, she is independent and fiercely loyal. She acts with her heart and thinks about the consequences later, and it’s something that I really admire in a person. I’m still quite intrigued about Jett. The little glimpses into his head were absolute perfection and I only wish there were more. He’s such a mysterious anomaly to me. He’s harboring all these secrets, but you can tell that somewhere inside of him, he’s acting out of protection and doing what he feels he has to. Though his words may convey aggravation and anger, his actions always show his love and adoration for Brooke.

“If you don’t fight for what you love and yearn, don’t mourn what could have been. In life there are rules; in love no exceptions.”

The Lover’s Promise will leave you digging to get to the root of an issue that we NEED resolving. It will leave you cussing at both Brooke and Jett, questioning their motives. Most of all, it will cause a strong desire for these two to work their stuff out and give us more of those heated, lustful interactions. The sexual tension is high, but the consequences seem to be even higher. I will most definitely be on pins and needles waiting for the final installment, The Lover’s Surrender, to see just how everything gets resolved!
