Author: Jessica Sorensen
Series: Unbeautiful #1
Release Date: December 23, 2014
You want to know my secrets? What lies beneath the pretty? The scars I can’t let anyone see? The scars tied to my secrets?
On the outside I appear normal. Some might even say perfect.
They say that I’m a pretty girl. They say I should be happy. They say that I have nothing to be angry about. That I’m popular. A cheerleader. That I’m perfect.
Perfect. Perfect. Perfect.
But all they see is what’s on the outside.
On the inside I’m raw, open, bleeding. Scars that can’t seem to heal the wounds.
Carrying dark secrets about who I really am.
How afraid I am to tell the truth.
And it’s slowly killing me.
Tattoos. Piercing. Scars. The guy who can’t speak.
Gothic freak. Mute. Punk. I’ve heard it all.
They say that I’m probably dangerous. They say people should stay away from me.
They say. They say. They say.
But who are they anyway?
To decide what I am.
They don’t know what’s hidden beneath the scars. Beneath the piercings and tattoos.
The secrets I keep hidden beneath the silence.
Maybe if they knew, they wouldn’t fear me so much.
Then again, maybe they’d fear me more.
Jessica Sorensen takes her usual heartache and angst and drags it down a darker path with Unbeautiful. Although this story is just beginning, I already find myself consumed by the twists and turns that are sure to lead Emery and Ryler on a haunting journey. We met Ryler briefly in the Coincidence series and caught a glimpse of his past, one he is now trying to escape. Jessica does a great job introducing her complicated characters and giving us a look at where they come from. Both characters are damaged in heartbreaking ways and their voices distinct and intriguing, leaving me thoroughly invested in their story. Emery and Ryler are both looking for a fresh start and it seems the more the step outside the lives they knew, the closer they get to coming full circle. Unbeautiful is the beginning of what promises to be another innovative and addictive series.
“But, to me, he is art, poetry for the eyes and heart. He is the most terrifyingly beautiful guy I have ever seen. And his scars have to tell a story, a story I want to hear.”
Since we really only met Ryler superficially before, I was overcome by the depth of this character as Jessica revealed him to us over the course of Unbeautiful. He is certainly a complexity that I can’t wait to further unravel in the next book of the series. His desperation to leave his history behind and his unnerving silence really feed the mystery that surrounds this broken man. Emery is pretty much the polar opposite of Ryler. Where he’s seen too much of life’s darkness, Emery has been shielded from it her entire life. Her struggle to break free and leave behind a home that holds so many secrets is already leading her down an unexpected road and I’m absolutely hooked. The growing connection between Ryler and Emery is hesitant and fragile, but with an underlying ferocity that promises to explode if given the chance to take off.
“Welcome to hell, Ryler. A place where the evil thrive and the weak die.”
This storyline has so many moving components, layers of lies and secrets that have me at a loss to predict the outcome of this journey. I’m honestly so enthralled by Emery and the world she comes from. Her past is so controlled and secretive, you just know there are some serious demons lingering in her hometown. Jessica Sorensen has crafted a unique dynamic with Emery’s upbringing and I am anxious to see how it intersects with her new beginning. The atmosphere shifts considerably when Emery and Ryler meet and just as things begin to get comfortable, Jessica spins their entire world on its axis, bringing everything Emery thought she knew crashing back down. In true Jessica Sorensen fashion, she leaves us questioning everything and anxious for the next book in the series and the continuation of Ryler and Emery’s story.
