In a modern twist of fairy tales,
what if the beast is a woman instead of a man?
I was about to find out when a mysterious job led to the secluded home of a horror novelist. I’d lost everything: my scholarship, my education, and my way. In denial of my family inheritance, I took the unusual employment as a chance out of a hole, but I found myself buried in the unknown trauma of another situation much deeper.
I had changed my name and my address to keep myself hidden, but my scars were more than physical. Living as a recluse in the woods, I was used to being alone, so I wasn’t happy when a certain someone was always in my space. Our first encounter was less than pleasant and tension continued at every attempt to tame me.
I knew she was keeping secrets and I wanted to help, but she was cutting me down and cutting me off every time she opened her mouth. Our frustration with one another grew until a misunderstanding changed everything. How can I be the next guy after something so tragic? It was a challenge I wasn’t sure I was willing to take.
Taste Test is a modern day twist on the story of beauty and the beast. I always enjoy seeing classic storylines altered and bent to fit the here and now and L.B. Dunbar did not disappoint. Ethan and Ella’s story was fun, flirty, and fearless. I was hooked on them from the start and as this story unfolded I found myself more and more absorbed by this couple’s unique journey. The connection between Ethan and Ella is undeniable and I couldn’t help but ache for them both as they fought their feelings and danced around the magnetic pull of their attraction. Emotions run high in this story and relationships are delicate, threatening to crumble with the slightest strain. This book constantly surprised me, enjoying the unexpected moments of heartbreak and the beautiful romantic gestures L.B. Dunbar has filled Taste Test with.
Ethan is fantastic and lovable as he stumbled through life. His relationship with his mother stole my heart and his concern for Ella was genuine and fierce. I love the courage and grace with which L.B. told Ella’s story. What happened in her past is real and ugly and can’t be made light of as an excuse for behavior. Ella was a force all her own. Her fear made her hesitant to let anyone new into her life, but once they’d crossed the threshold she was full of light and beauty and innocence. In making Ella a positive person with dreams and plans, L.B. Dunbar has given this story, and girls like Ella, strength and power. While her setbacks and moments of doubt were devastating, I absolutely adored watching her learn to open her heart to Ethan. Her transformation over the course of this book was my favorite part of this story and L.B. did an amazing job in crafting this incredible character.
We also get a little bit more of Jess and Emily from Sound Advice in this book. Just enough to put a smile on my face and remind me how much I adore this little world that L.B. Dunbar has created. With each book I read, I find myself enjoying L.B.’s writing style even more. She has a voice that is fresh, honest, and authentic. Her characters are intriguing and imperfect with stories that will grab hold of your heart. L.B. has a talent for invoking emotion with her words, allowing the reader to lose themselves in her character’s thoughts and feelings. This story had a great balance of secrets, romance, turmoil, and triumph, encouraging me to keep reading until I’d reached the end. I can already feel myself missing Ethan and Ella, their story is a fantastic addition to the Sensations Collection.
