“Nana’s Rules to Live By”
Gentlemen should always open the door for a lady.
I was busy and I didn’t have time for a vacation, let alone a weekend away. When a frantic phone call from an old neighbor brought me to my grandmother’s summer home, I wasn’t prepared for an extended stay. And I especially wasn’t prepared for the man holding the door open to the radio repair shop who made a lasting first impression.
In attempts at a relationship, a gentleman should always make the first move.
Calling Jess Carter’s clenched jaw and denim-colored eyes part of his standoffish manner was an understatement. His brooding exterior bordered on being downright rude. From the moment I bumped into him, quite literally, our lives began to intertwine in a way that made me question what I wanted.
Children should be seen and not heard.
Jess had secrets and I was determined to get to the bottom of them. Even he didn’t know the solutions to all his problems, I wanted to help. In doing so, I might have drawn too close to the truth, forcing Jess to risk something he wasn’t sure he could chance again. I had decisions to make for myself and it’s hard to know whose advice to take when so many questions remain unanswered.
Sound Advice was an incredibly sweet surprise. Having never read anything by LB Dunbar before, I had no idea what to expect. I read this entire book in one sitting because I needed to now how this beautiful story would end. Emily and Jess are an unlikely pair that discover a rare connection between them. LB Dunbar wrote this couple with so much heart that I could feel the sparks flying between them and appreciate the hesitancy with which they navigated their developing emotions. I loved every minute of watching these two fight their feelings and learn to let go.
“I couldn’t get you out of my head all day. But I need you out of my head, Emily. Can you please get out?”
The secondary characters are a huge part of this story and they bring so much color and warmth to Emily and Jess’ journey. My favorite part about this book was that it wasn’t just about Emily and Jess, it is a story about finding your family in unexpected places. Katie was an irreplaceable part of this book. Her relationship with her father and the character growth we saw as she got to know Emily was stunning. I swear I wanted to reach through the pages and hug this sweet, broken little girl. Her presence upped the emotional component of this story and made me feel more than I could have imagined.
“But you… your silence is deafening and maddening. I don’t know what you’re thinking or feeling unless I can see you, and I wasn’t seeing you.”
Sound Advice is equal parts heartbreaking and breathtaking. The simplicity of this story mixed with genuine emotion to create something that was undeniably sweet and absolutely relatable. I quickly fell in love with LB Dunbar’s characters and was swept up in her fantastic storytelling. The story was well paced and did a great job balancing the heavy with the light. Overflowing with feeling and laced with both moments of intensity and humor, I adored LB’s writing style. She had me fully invested in Emily and Jess from the start and I hope to see more of them in the future.
