The Secret of Ella and Micah

Synopsis

A rule-breaker with a fiery attitude, Ella always wore her heart on her sleeve. Then she left everything behind to go to college, where she transformed into someone who follows the rules, keeps everything together, and hides all her problems. Now it’s summer break and she has nowhere else to go but home. But once there, Ella fears that everything she’s worked so hard to bury might resurface-especially with Micha living right next door.

Smart, sexy, and confident, Micha can get under Ella’s skin like no one else. He knows everything about her, including her darkest secrets. If he tries to tempt the old Ella to return, he will be impossible to resist. But what Ella doesn’t realize is that when she left, she took a piece of Micha’s heart with her. Now he’s determined to win back the girl he lost, no matter what it takes.

Review

The Secret of Ella and Micha was the first book by Jessica Sorensen I ever read. Intrigued by the synopsis, I picked it up and quickly found myself absolutely addicted to Jessica’s beautifully complex characters and emotionally devastating storylines. Living in the aftermath of an earth shattering series of events, Ella runs away, leaving Micha and his broken heart behind. Forced to return home, Ella learns that everything she left behind refuses to remain buried in the past. This story captures all of the heartache and uncertainty of the new adult genre, taking us on a journey of forgiveness and transformation. Ella and Micha’s story owned me completely and left me wanting more of this incredible couple.

“It’s what’s buried deep inside that frightens me because it’s broken, like a shattered mirror.”

Ella and Micha are both one-of-a-kind personalities, forced to endure more than anyone should. Jessica Sorensen does an amazing job in building these characters to be the broken, scarred, resilient, and strong figures that they are. She has managed to define Ella and Micha and capture the essence of who they are in every detail of this story. The chemistry between these two is combustible. No matter what was happening in the story, there was an undeniable pull between them that Jessica managed to feed and further fuel. I felt the anguish and regret that colored their relationship as they both tried to fight their fear of falling. Jessica flooded this book with the complicated feelings that come from best friends seeing each other in a new light, in a way that was simply breathtaking.

“Micha saw too much of me and it scared me too much to let him in all the way.”

The storyline is heart wrenching and painful, carefully dealing with tragedy, loss, and letting go. Over the course of this book, Jessica Sorensen traverses several difficult topics with absolute grace and complete respect. The Secret of Ella and Micha interlaces moments of carefree youth and reckless abandon with sincere grief and unavoidable responsibility, creating an inimitable story of growth and love. I loved watching Ella and Micha confront their past, become reacquainted, and fall victim to their own hearts. The moments of pain they suffered made those instants of bliss that much more satisfying and heart warming. Lila and Ethan provided additional depth to the story, filling out Ella and Micha’s characters and adding a little more fun and intrigue to an otherwise intense story.

“You can’t just change who you are on the outside and expect it to change who you are on the inside.”

As this book came to an end, I was left with a feeling of contentment but also incompletion. Their story is only just beginning and I can’t wait to see where Jessica Sorensen takes these characters on their journey. Both characters have grown so much in this book, but so much more transformation lies ahead. I’m looking forward to more Lila and Ethan as well. Their dynamic is totally charming and has me hooked already. Jessica Sorensen’s talent is evident on each and every page. Her writing is both heart aching and hopeful, grabbing the reader from the beginning and refusing to let go. If you love new adult romance, stories of tragedy and triumph, second chances at love, and best friends falling hard, then The Secret of Ella and Micha is the perfect read for you.
