Author: A.M. Madden
Release Date: October 27, 2014
Genre: New Adult/Contemporary Romance
Trey Taylor was loving life. Bass player to the world famous rock band Devil’s Lair, chicks falling to their knees at every turn, no one to be held accountable to for his actions…life rocked.
He had all he needed, food to sustain his body, sex to sustain his libido, rock to sustain his soul. For years he walked to the beat of his own drum, and made no excuses to anyone. Running and hiding can temporarily distract your fate, but it won’t derail it. Fate was coming for him, whether he liked it or not.
His past was gaining ground and threatening all the secrets he desperately tried to hide. His present was slowing him down, making him feel emotions he buried years ago. The two are about to collide. Will Trey survive the impact?
From the start Trey Taylor has been the epitome of a bad boy rockstar. It was easy to fall for his looks, charm, talent and filthy mouth but I guess I really didn’t know what I was getting myself into with Backstage because what A.M. Madden had me effortlessly falling for was Trey Taylor’s heart. His story was unexpected as was the emotional depth we saw with Trey’s character. Backstage really went above and beyond, completely blowing me away. With each addition to this series, this beautiful family of characters embeds itself a little deeper into my heart.
Trey’s character transformation over the course of this book was staggering. A.M. slowly unravels the cocky, arrogant rockstar until the complicated man underneath is laid bare. His story is absolutely tragic and I was overwhelmed by the emotions I experienced on his journey. His pain became my own and my connection to him only strengthened as my soul ached for him. I loved that we still got to see the fun, laid back Trey who cracks dirty jokes, tortures Hunter, and teases Leila. The dichotomy that is this man is stunning and it makes for a character you can’t help but allow to completely consume you.
A.M. Madden has created and nurtured an incredible little family with Devil’s Lair and company. The love and loyalty they all have for one another is heartwarming and it’s obvious that Trey’s story isn’t just his; it belongs to all of them. As always I adored Trey and Leila’s banter and Jack’s threats to stay away from his wife. The group as a whole carries with it a lightness that gives even the most tragic tales some much needed hope. I felt like I was getting an exclusive look at Devil’s Lair as I read this book. I loved seeing how the band got together and it was great having scenes from Encore filled in with Trey’s perspective.
With each new release, A.M. Madden manages to demonstrate her incredible growth as an author. Backstage showcases her fantastic character development and her ability to handle tough subjects with grace and sensitivity. She kept me impatiently reading, desperate to take in all the highs and lows of this story. As this complex journey unfolded, I was drawn further and further into the storyline, anxious that at any moment the other shoe would drop. I couldn’t have imagined a better book for Trey and I’m really hoping this isn’t the last we’ll see of Devil’s Lair. Scott and Hunter both need their stories told!
