Title: Fractured Lines
Author: Jen McLaughlin
Series: Out of Line #4
Release Date: October 14, 2014
The lines we once crossed so easily have widened and torn us apart…
Once upon a time I thought Finn and I would live happily ever after, but real life doesn’t always have a happy ending. He’s testing my trust, and I’m losing faith in the man I thought I’d spend the rest of my life with, and there’s nothing I do can stop it. He’s the one I trusted to keep me safe, but now he’s the source of my greatest pain…
Forgiveness is fragile, and some fractures never fully heal…
One mistake—a slip in a moment of weakness—might cost me everything I’ve worked so hard for. The thing about trust is that it’s a lot easier to lose than it is to build. Just as I’m about to give up and surrender to the demons from my past, an unexpected threat reminds me what I’m best at: protecting the woman I love. Whether or not she wants me, I will fight for Carrie and our daughter, and I will keep them safe—no matter the cost.
Even if I have to put my life and my heart on the line.
I was absolutely thrilled when I heard that Jen McLaughlin would be bringing back Carrie and Finn, all grown up! The thought I seeing them years down the road, settled in their marriage, careers and life was so exciting. With the instability of young love behind them, I was certain that years passed would provide us with a very different look at this couple. As they’ve grown up, Finn and Carrie have only gotten steamier together. Jen had Carrie hot and bothered with just a single look from Finn and I can’t deny that I was feeling the heat myself. These two fight hard and love harder and I am pretty much addicted to their dynamic.
“I smoothed his hair off his face, studying the scars that reminded me of all we’d been through. All we’d survived.”
Carrie shows a substantial amount of character growth in this novel. The young girl we first met has been replaced with a confident, protective and fierce woman who is unquestionably loyal and practically explodes with love for her family. She is forced to make some hard decisions, decisions for the greater good that are all too capable of causing her pain. At first I thought the Finn we were seeing was irrevocably broken, but as the story unfolded, I realized just how strong and stubborn a man he was proving to be. He still knows how to make me sigh. The ride this book took me on still has my stomach in knots. I was nervous, worried, and completely consumed by everything that threatened to stand in the way of Carrie and Finn’s happily ever after.
“All the odds that had been thrown at us and tried to rip us apart, but we hadn’t given up. We’d stayed strong and fought for our love.”
From the word go, Jen doesn’t mess around. She jumps right into the meat of this story with Finn’s residual struggle with PTSD and the effect it has on his family. While deeply saddened by the situation Carrie and Finn found themselves in, I have to give Jen McLaughlin credit for keeping this story raw and honest. The things Carrie and Finn battle in this book are overwhelming, but completely genuine. I really respected the author for holding true to PTSD and not settling for a fluffy, unrealistically perfect happily ever after. Finn and Carrie have both been through too much to have their struggles minimalized. Jen McLaughlin made sure Fractured Lines would continue to serve as evidence of their trials, defeats and triumphs. I can’t wait to see what Jen has in store next for this series!
