Title – Elite
Author – Rachel Van Dyken
Series – Eagle Elite, #1
When I won the annual Eagle Elite College Scholarship lottery, I was thrilled. After all, my grandma had just died and I wanted to take care of my aging grandpa — he couldn’t be a farmer in Wyoming forever. And graduating from Eagle Elite meant opportunity.
But I wasn’t counting on meeting Nixon.
Nor was I counting on the rules of the Elect.
1. Do not touch The Elect.
2. Do not look at The Elect.
3. Do not speak to The Elect.
And worst of all? Don’t discover the secret they hide, because in the end, you may just realize… it’s about you.
*This is a New Adult Book, blood, violence, cursing, sexual references, and drug use. Not recommended for those under 17.*
If I had to describe Elite in one word it would be ADDICTIVE! I’m seriously hooked on Rachel Van Dyken’s yummy new BBFs (yes, plural!) and I can NOT get enough of this series. Elite is one of those books that I started really late hoping to relax with a chapter or two before bed and ended up staying up all night to finish reading. Tracey, Nixon, Chase, Monroe, Tex, and the rest of the Eagle Elite world have cast their spell on me and I know there’s no getting them off my mind. Elite was fun, sexy, suspenseful, and downright thrilling. Rachel pulled no punches when it came to the action and unexpected emotional impact of this novel. She had me riding the highs and dreading the lows of this crazy world she has created with her words. Every bit of this story felt like it flowed through me, as I was swept away by the complexity of the characters and drowned in the power of their emotions.
“It was scary when someone’s presence had that much power to alter the way you felt about yourself, because what happens when you lose yourself in that person? Do you disappear, or do you just mold into what they view you as?”
I don’t even know where to begin when it comes to the characters in Elite. I mean, the boys are absolutely yummy but there is so much more to them. I loved unraveling Chase and Nixon. Chase’s determination to look after Trace, even when it went against Nixon’s wishes, had me falling hard for the caring soul behind the rough wrapping. Nixon surprised me at every turn with the protective and romantic heart that hid inside the fierce, hard exterior. Rachel Van Dyken did an amazing job with these characters, making them work for the reader’s affection and revealing their many layers as the story progressed. Now, Trace was everything I love in a heroine and then some. She is sheltered, vulnerable, and totally insecure, yet from the start she is ferocious. I absolutely loved her attitude and the way she stood up for herself with tiny acts of defiance. These small moments of strength demonstrated the potential burning inside her and I just know she is going to turn out to be a force of nature.
“Everything you’ve ever known… is about to change.”
I would love to jump into Rachel Van Dyken’s mind for a day and see the world of Eagle Elite as it unfolds to her. Everything about this storyline was perfection, surprising me at every turn and revealing just enough to keep me on the edge of my seat. The smallest of details comes full circle and the biggest moments turn out to hold more meaning than I could have ever dreamed. Elite was the perfect combination of new adult angst, heart-pounding action, dangerous secrets, devastating heartache, and overwhelming love, giving me a massive book hangover. Rachel Van Dyken has a voice that is unparalleled, stealing my heart with each and every page. I’m so freaking excited for the rest of this series, desperate for more of this badass crew and the war that is waging. The secrets of the Eagle Elite series are just beginning to unravel and I know when the truth comes out, it is going to blow my mind.
EEEK! I’ll admit that I was nervous to pick up this book and probably a bit hesitant because it was slightly out of the realm of what I normally read. I didn’t know how I would do with a book about the mafia and whether or not I would like it. However, it was Rachel Van Dyken so I figured I would jump and try it out. Boy, was I not disappointed! RVD did it again and made me fall in love with the characters and the storyline.
“Trust is like love. It doesn’t exist. It’s a fairytale society feeds us in order to get us to conform. I don’t expect you to trust me. I expect you to follow the rules. Rules keep you safe.”
From the very first chapter, I was instantly pulled into this world. I wanted to slap Nixon and hug Trace. I wanted to understand why in heck people would open their school to new people and then treat them so horribly. As the story unfolded, I felt myself being sucked into this world and fast! Rachel Van Dyken would drop these little hints that there was so much more to the background story but never outright told us what it was. However, she wet your appetite enough to just keep reading so you could get to the bottom of it. After time, I learned to love Nixon. He had the weight of the world on his shoulders and was just trying to be a peacekeeper. I guess I could relate to him in that sense. Trace was such an amazing character as well. She was strong, independent, and had strong family ties. She made me want to be her friend, not just a character I was reading about. I also adored Chase and am extremely curious to see how he plays into the other books! Monroe was also a great addition who I look forward to reading more about. She was definitely more of a secondary character but I loved the way she could bring out a different side of Trace! They all just worked really well together.
“Keep your head high. Ain’t nothing to look at on the ground.”
Elite was a rollercoaster ride that is sure to keep you turning the pages and I absolutely can’t wait to delve back into this world and read the next book in the series! With that bomb that was dropped at the end, I was sad to even stop to write a review. Elite was a quick, amazing read that is sure to leave you wanting more!
