The Redemption of Callie and Kayden

Synopsis

The dark secret Kayden has kept hidden for years is finally out. Worse, he’s facing charges for battery. The only way to clear his name is for Callie to speak up-something he’ll never ask her to do. Instead, he’ll do whatever he must to protect her . . . even if it means letting go of the only girl he’s ever loved.

Callie knows Kayden is going back to his dark place and desperately wants to save him. But that means facing her greatest fear and admitting her own painful secrets aloud. The thought of breaking her silence terrifies her-but not as much as the thought of losing Kayden forever.

Deep in her heart, Callie knows the time has come for her and Kayden to forget the pain of the past. With the help of her friends Seth and Luke she makes a plan to show Kayden the life they could have. But can she convince him they can make a fresh start together-or is she already too late?

I thought The Coincidence of Callie & Kayden was a stunning story and I hoped that The Redemption of Callie & Kayden would live up to the first book. I didn’t think it was possible for this story and these characters to seed themselves more deeply into my heart, but somehow they did. This book took all the pain and heartache of the first book and made it tangible for the reader. As Callie and Kayden are forced to finally give their suffering a voice, their tragedy became unquestionably real and entirely heart wrenching, taking me on a journey of suffering, love and redemption.

“You don’t forget. You just move past it. Let go. Be who you were supposed to be instead of who they make you feel like you should be.”

Jessica Sorensen has orchestrated a breathtaking character evolution with Callie and Kayden. Just when I thought they couldn’t possibly transform any more, she finds a way to make them continue growing. The Callie we see in this book is still scared and broken, but she finds a strength within her that allows her to face her fears and help Kayden do the same. Her emotional upheaval was overwhelming, but her courage was inspiring. Jessica made sure this character was not only someone you could sympathize with, but someone you could love, admire, and find your own strength in.

“But there was no imagination or magic left inside me and all I heard was the dead silence of nighttime and the secrets lying in my heart.”

Jessica Sorensen revealed a lot of depth to Kayden’s character in this book. The more we got to see inside his head as the truth about his past comes to the surface, the deeper I fell for him. Seeing his pain gave me a better understanding for how he and Callie fit so perfectly. How fate had designed these souls to be one. Jessica’s incredibly storytelling made their bond unbreakable in this book. Then there is Seth and Luke who make this story whole. Without them this story wouldn’t have been able to grow wings. They complete the family that Callie and Kayden have built and they give them both the inimitable support and unconditional love necessary to overcome their pasts.

“If I could wish for one thing, it would be that I could always feel this way, completely and blissfully consumed by someone else. No, not just by someone else. By Kayden.”

I felt so many things while reading this book. I’m not even sure I have words for a lot of the emotions I experienced. Callie and Kayden’s journey is dark, haunted by ghosts of their pasts. At times their pain seemed insurmountable. My heart broke and shattered for them as I watched the soul-crushing moments of their lives try to bury them. I hurt for them and I hoped for them. The family they created for themselves brought me comfort, while their unwavering loyalty and love put the broken pieces back together. I was riding the waves with these incredible characters, never wanting the journey to end. I can’t wait to see what Jessica has in store for Luke and Seth in the future and I’m ready to see where Callie and Kayden’s story takes them next.

As soon as I turned the last page on The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden, I immediately had to dive into the next book and I do not regret a moment of it. Jessica Sorensen created such an addictive couple with this hero and heroine, two people with real-life issues that I both cried with and rejoiced for. The Redemption of Callie and Kayden was a heartbreaking journey toward healing that I simply never wanted to end.

“Maybe if I try hard enough, we’ll fall into each other and become one single person and we can share our pain instead of carrying it by ourselves.”

Though I found the first book to be devastating, this novel sometimes proved to be even more so. Both the hero and heroine had to confront demons only by spilling their deepest, darkest secrets. So many times, I wanted to be able to scoop them into my arms and hug all of their problems away. I just love that both Callie and Kayden realized that the could be the other’s strength in gaining their freedom. However, when it came down to it, they each needed to take the steps on their own. Though I am past the age range of these characters, there was something so relatable about them as well. I remember feeling those dark, hopeless feelings. I remember wishing that I had a way to cope with them. Though I never resorted to the measures that these two did, I think it shone a light on two very real afflictions facing teens today. Their relationship was hard and real, and probably one of the most beautiful “ugly” stories that I have ever had the pleasure of coming across.

“He’s looking at me, and I mean really looking at me, and there’s this connection, this understanding that we are two people who have been fractured, not by ourselves but by someone else and we’re doing everything we can to not shatter to pieces.”

Jessica Sorensen has created a fictional world steeped in such realistic emotions that I often found myself needing to pause to breathe. Her words flowed beautifully and made my heart beat in the most heartbreaking of ways. The Redemption of Callie and Kayden delivered on so many feelings that I wasn’t expecting, but isn’t that what makes for the best reads? I’m annoyed at myself that I waited so long to pick these stories up, but you can bet that I’ll be diving into the rest of the series as soon as possible. I can’t wait to see where she takes these two, but I’m also deliriously excited to see where the other characters we have met end up as well.
