Author – Tessa Bailey
Publication Date – September 29, 2014
Series – Serve, #1
Her mind rejects his world. But her body knows its master.
Journalist Caroline Preston arrives at Serve, New York City’s hottest BDSM club, with one goal—to hate it. If her brother wasn’t trying to turn the family’s respectable financial magazine into a publication that features “lifestyle” pieces for the wealthy and adventurous, she wouldn’t even be there, trying to write an article about a world she doesn’t understand.
But then she sees him.
Jonah Briggs doesn’t leave his post for just anyone. As the owner of the club, his sole purpose is to ensure that his clientele get everything they need, but when he sees Caroline, his only thought is what he wants—to dominate the sexy little reporter and give the most exquisite pleasure she’s ever experienced.
Caroline has no intention of entering that particular lion’s den—not with her family’s reputation at stake—no matter how dark, sexy, and complexthe lion in question may be. But with every encounter, she craves more, and with every slide of his lips, she realizes Jonah might just be the man to break down all her defenses…if she’ll let him.
Owned by Fate was the first book I’ve encountered by Tessa Bailey, but I can say with absolute certainty that it will not be the last. The characters were intriguing, the plot was different, and the writing was superb! As much as the blurb intrigued me, I will be honest and say that I was a little nervous about diving in and finding the same story I’ve read before, but with different professions and names, especially given the instant love aspect. However, I am incredibly happy to say this was far from the case. I thought this story was unique and wonderful, while still giving a taste of the BDSM lifestyle, and a natural progression of feelings.
“Trust, communication, honesty. Risk, sensation, surrender. Power.”
There is so much I could say about how much I absolutely loved Caroline and Jonah! One of the things that instantly grabbed my attention was that Caroline was such an independent female lead. She had a hard time wrapping her head around how she could maintain this strength outside of the bedroom, and allow a man so much control inside of one. I thought the story did a great job of raising (and subsequently answering) questions for people who may have an interest in this sort of lifestyle. Her comfort zone increasingly grew, and I felt it lead to such great character development. She continued to work in a man’s world as a journalist, yet still thrived above the rest. As for Jonah, he just had all those special qualities I love in a male character. He was dominating and fierce, yet still had his weaknesses, which is key for me. I don’t like to see characters put up on pedestals without any realistic portrayal, so the fact that he could be tormented one moment and pliable with his expectations the next just did me in! Furthermore, I absolutely LOVE the fact that he never once asked Caroline to choose between her job and the relationship. He didn’t try to sway her to paint him or what he does in a positive light, despite the personal reasons he had for it. He was kind and understanding which made me instantly fall in love with him. I also saw his growth from this control freak, workaholic to the man that Caroline helped make him to be and that was also a definite plus for me.
“It’s about permission to explore desires you might not even be aware of yet.”
The chemistry between these two was completely off the charts! I loved the sizzle and spark of their times together. With how different their personalities were, I was really worried that they just weren’t going to jive together for me, but I was definitely impressed with the direction the story took. Owned by Fate was a spicy, quick read that will leave readers’ tongues wagging and definitely begging for more. I can’t wait to see what else Tessa Bailey has in store for the future, and in the meantime, I’ll be adding her backlist to my TBR!
