Erin Easter was now Erin Alderman, because Erin Alderman was dead.

In the second installment of this USA Today bestselling series, follow protagonist Erin, a high school senior in tiny Blackwell, Oklahoma. After a terrible accident leaves two classmates dead, Erin learns that she was switched at birth. Shortly after, she moves into the home of her true parents, Sam and Julianne Alderman, transforming Erin over night from pariah of Blackwell High School, to the only child of one of the most affluent couples in town.

Also being pursued by her childhood crush, Weston Gates, the dream she once had is now reality. But when Erin stumbles upon secrets that gives her the answers she’s been searching for, she also finds a truth she never wanted to know.

What I absolutely love about these Happenstance novellas is that Jamie McGuire is taking something that happens every single day inside and outside our schools and talking about it. She’s raising awareness about bullying through her gift and it’s such an eye-opening thing to see. That being said, this second installment was even better than the first.

“I’m not afraid of them. I refuse. No matter what they do to me, I am in control of the way others make me feel. They can’t hurt me if I don’t let them.”

We’re thrown back into Erin’s life while she is navigating the tremendous changes that have been happening. She has all the adjustments to make on the personal side of things and it truly left me with a “damned if you do, damned if you don’t” feeling. She was teased when she had nothing, and she continues to be taunted by the same kids while at school – despite all the differences in her life. However, we actually get down to the WHY in this installment and I was grateful for that. It made the story flow smoothly, both individually and in the overall storyline arc. Furthermore, I thought that Weston’s character showed some true diversity. We got to see this whole other, more villainized, version of him. It helped to make his character not feel one-dimensional, particularly after the question is raised so many times of why he didn’t do anything to stop the bullying.

“Within the walls of our high school were the weak, the sad, the pompous, and the proud, all flying down the same road at a hundred miles an hour to an end for which we weren’t ready.”

Something about Happenstance 2 just resonated so deeply in my bones. I understood completely some of the things Erin felt about being prepared for life while others were just floating through. The book is certainly heartbreaking in ways (especially with truths being revealed), but it really did make me stop and evaluate, as I think that most readers will do. The writing was superb and sucks you in from beginning to end. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, but I can’t wait for one more ride and see how it all concludes in Part 3!
